- [00:00:00.862]Alright I'm professor Juhann Waller,
- [00:00:02.983]professor of North Carolina A&T
- [00:00:04.659]and I'm here to give you a presentation on why
- [00:00:06.444]to select graduate school.
- [00:00:08.789]So my presentation I will hit learning objectives,
- [00:00:10.949]learning outcomes, and then we'll have session presentations
- [00:00:13.995]and then a conclusion.
- [00:00:15.797]So again I'm going to try to make up a little bit of ground
- [00:00:18.089]since we started a little bit late
- [00:00:19.746]due to some technical difficulties.
- [00:00:21.916]So if I go too fast, just raise your hand
- [00:00:23.947]and I can backtrack.
- [00:00:27.234]So our learning objectives is to discuss reasons
- [00:00:29.810]to pursue an advanced degree,
- [00:00:31.144]considerations to begin the application process,
- [00:00:34.534]completing the application process,
- [00:00:36.467]and in gaining admission into a graduate program.
- [00:00:40.403]We also want to hit make sure that you're knowledgeable
- [00:00:42.984]about why grad school is important,
- [00:00:45.359]make sure that you're knowledgeable about preparing
- [00:00:46.856]for graduate school, and be informed about the benefits
- [00:00:49.889]of attending and investing in graduate studies,
- [00:00:52.592]and the career paths as a graduate student.
- [00:00:56.573]So our first exercise, we're already in our groups.
- [00:00:59.335]I want you to generate a list of twenty things that you know
- [00:01:01.784]about graduate school currently.
- [00:01:04.807]You're going to have about five minutes, but a couple
- [00:01:06.977]of minutes to complete that exercise.
- [00:01:08.669]So right now in your groups, generate a list
- [00:01:10.819]of about 20 things which you currently know
- [00:01:12.390]about graduate school.
- [00:01:14.705]Give me two things you listed on your list.
- [00:01:17.276]Said no lower than a B as a grade.
- [00:01:20.094]I can't hear you, say --
- [00:01:20.927]No lower than a B.
- [00:01:22.027]No lower than a B? Okay.
- [00:01:23.562]And then we said it's about two years.
- [00:01:25.409]Okay. So graduate school takes two years and
- [00:01:27.072]you got to get a grade no lower than a B in your classes.
- [00:01:30.183]Let's hear about you guys.
- [00:01:31.548]It can be funded,
- [00:01:32.907]and you have to take the GRE.
- [00:01:35.498]Got to take the GRE and be funded. Okay.
- [00:01:37.706]And my last group.
- [00:01:39.806]Give me two.
- [00:01:41.206]More credibility.
- [00:01:42.447]More credibility.
- [00:01:44.247]One more.
- [00:01:45.080]Advancement into your career.
- [00:01:46.596]Advancement into your career.
- [00:01:48.839]All of the responses you guys gave are correct.
- [00:01:52.896]And so let's go on.
- [00:01:55.251]So, some of the things that I've came up with
- [00:01:57.909]for graduate school, they provide specialized knowledge
- [00:01:59.717]and training. Which I think,
- [00:02:00.702]one of the groups said.
- [00:02:02.238]It provides more depth and breadth to subjects taken
- [00:02:04.105]in your chosen field of study.
- [00:02:06.606]You get to engage in research
- [00:02:08.631]and other intellectual activities to advance,
- [00:02:11.359]so you can advance as well as contribute
- [00:02:12.931]to the overall body of knowledge.
- [00:02:14.838]And requires a personal commitment.
- [00:02:16.488]That piece right there, requires a personal commitment,
- [00:02:18.666]is probably the most important.
- [00:02:22.809]In addition to all of that,
- [00:02:23.899]why go pursue an advanced degree?
- [00:02:26.780]Personal growth.
- [00:02:28.375]Greater employment opportunities,
- [00:02:29.754]greater career advancement opportunities,
- [00:02:31.207]a sense of accomplishment,
- [00:02:33.042]greater recognition and credibility,
- [00:02:34.707]field of study requirements and financial reward.
- [00:02:38.730]As most of you probably know, the more degrees you get,
- [00:02:41.380]most of the time your salary will increase as well.
- [00:02:45.100]Another little exercise,
- [00:02:47.559]trends in the economy shows that the US
- [00:02:49.035]is becoming extremely dependent on seeking higher educated
- [00:02:51.473]and skilled workforce.
- [00:02:53.009]We are moving from the industrial economy
- [00:02:55.566]more to a technological economy.
- [00:02:57.642]As you know, popular apps like Uber, Google,
- [00:03:02.781]we're becoming a more technological economy.
- [00:03:05.538]World problems are getting more complex, complicated,
- [00:03:08.094]so we need advanced technology, advanced knowledge
- [00:03:10.841]in order to be able to solve
- [00:03:12.741]the world's more complex problems.
- [00:03:16.049]Information here from the US Census Bureau, between 2008
- [00:03:21.107]and 2018, approximately 2.5 million jobs will require
- [00:03:25.670]a master's, doctoral, or advanced degrees.
- [00:03:28.119]And again, that piggybacks off of
- [00:03:29.788]the world's problems becoming more and more complex
- [00:03:31.912]and complicated.
- [00:03:34.096]So let's look at the financial reward aspect of it.
- [00:03:38.042]This is a bar chart, as you can see, with doctoral degrees,
- [00:03:41.522]and the meeting weekly earnin' is sixteen
- [00:03:44.440]hundred dollars a week.
- [00:03:46.119]Whereas if you just have a bachelor's degree,
- [00:03:48.244]you're lookin at around eleven hundred dollars a week.
- [00:03:50.627]So as you can see with this scale,
- [00:03:52.444]the more knowledge that you obtain,
- [00:03:54.974]the higher up potential your salary can be.
- [00:03:58.288]So that's, everybody likes money, right?
- [00:04:00.842](chuckles)
- [00:04:03.638]So, in addition to the personal commitment and
- [00:04:07.086]the financial rewards, there are some fields of studies
- [00:04:09.494]that require, to gain entry into that
- [00:04:12.380]particular field of study, that you have to thave
- [00:04:14.199]an advanced degrees.
- [00:04:15.539]You can see some of these listed here.
- [00:04:17.294]So we have economists,
- [00:04:20.271]urban planners,
- [00:04:21.763]urban and regional planners,
- [00:04:23.312]nurses, doctors, lawyers,
- [00:04:26.236]some librarians,
- [00:04:29.262]post-secondary education school teachers.
- [00:04:32.882]So that's something to think about as well is,
- [00:04:35.444]right now, you're an undergrad,
- [00:04:36.956]you have your respective majors.
- [00:04:39.423]In order to get into the entry-job market
- [00:04:41.668]at some of those majors, you may need to, you know,
- [00:04:43.838]get an advanced degree, it's a requirement, not an option.
- [00:04:48.906]Any questions?
- [00:04:52.907]So, this brings us to about the halfway point
- [00:04:55.873]of this presentation.
- [00:04:56.899]Now it's time for you to do some soul searching.
- [00:04:59.993]'Cause goin' to graduate school is a big decision.
- [00:05:03.672]So let's do another little exercise, so
- [00:05:07.137]in our groups, let's generate a list of five reasons
- [00:05:10.203]for attending graduate school,
- [00:05:11.974]and five reasons for not attending graduate school.
- [00:05:16.573]We can do that now.
- [00:05:19.045]So give me the five reasons for attending graduate school.
- [00:05:24.008]Okay, our five reasons are
- [00:05:29.412]money --
- [00:05:30.252]Money.
- [00:05:31.474]You get a more hands-on experience
- [00:05:33.569]within your field,
- [00:05:35.052]you get to elevate your resume with different titles,
- [00:05:37.094]you get a better understanding of things
- [00:05:38.846]to your specific field.
- [00:05:40.124]Okay.
- [00:05:41.772]And our cons were money,
- [00:05:44.165]I guess backing out of school and goin straight to work,
- [00:05:48.044]mostly independent study,
- [00:05:51.912]and the reason why I'm sayin this is,
- [00:05:53.139]I guess in real life, you're never just by yourself,
- [00:05:56.791]you work in a group and all of that.
- [00:05:59.803]Life, you gotta be a little bit (mumbles).
- [00:06:04.282]And then the time is somethin'.
- [00:06:06.223]Okay. So time, the money, and bein' by yourself. Okay.
- [00:06:10.985]Yeah, you can go.
- [00:06:12.586]Someone commented that (mumbles) studies
- [00:06:15.186]could conflict with someone wanting to start a family,
- [00:06:17.748]or do things, or stuff like that. (mumbles)
- [00:06:20.661]I like to call that life.
- [00:06:22.174](laughter) Life happens.
- [00:06:28.323]And then, you get more opportunities
- [00:06:29.689]if you go.
- [00:06:30.821]Okay. So what was the, you just gave me one.
- [00:06:33.344]So was life, like all five reasons
- [00:06:35.112]for not going to graduate school?
- [00:06:36.313]You got four other ones.
- [00:06:37.565]They was time-consuming,
- [00:06:39.696]there's expensive, commitment issues.
- [00:06:43.364]Expensive. Okay
- [00:06:45.119]People wanting to
- [00:06:47.001]start their career early.
- [00:06:48.444]Okay.
- [00:06:50.968]So hopefully out of your list,
- [00:06:52.517]two of the reasons that you gave
- [00:06:54.307]for not going to graduate school,
- [00:06:55.477]hopefully we can debunk those myths.
- [00:06:57.039]One is the money, and the career aspect,
- [00:07:01.056]being able to start your career.
- [00:07:02.451]'Cause goin to graduate school,
- [00:07:04.036]dependin on what career field you choose,
- [00:07:06.156]that work that you do in graduate school is
- [00:07:08.016]enhancin' that body of knowledge
- [00:07:09.728]and is jumpstartin' your career.
- [00:07:13.786]Alright. Did you tell me why go to grad school?
- [00:07:17.774]I told you one.
- [00:07:18.676]I said more opportunities.
- [00:07:20.393]We also said self-development,
- [00:07:22.249]elevating our social status as far as more credibility,
- [00:07:26.690]financial reward, and career advancement.
- [00:07:29.335]Okay. Good deal.
- [00:07:30.946]And last, but not least, my last group.
- [00:07:34.625]For not attending, we put
- [00:07:37.225](mumbles), it's time consuming,
- [00:07:40.712]the location could be an issue,
- [00:07:43.440]GPA is a big one.
- [00:07:45.468]Okay.
- [00:07:46.752]Not finding interest in research.
- [00:07:49.182]Okay.
- [00:07:52.067]I get it though hopefully at the end of all this
- [00:07:55.018]we can debunk some of those myths.
- [00:07:56.512]Again, the money,
- [00:07:59.674]GPA requirements,
- [00:08:01.994]yes there are GPA requirements,
- [00:08:03.531]but there are some creative things that
- [00:08:05.706]we as educators can do, so don't let that be
- [00:08:09.620]the reason you say, I don't wanna get an advanced degree,
- [00:08:12.586]I just wanna go working.
- [00:08:14.329]There was one other thing you said that we can debunk.
- [00:08:17.099]Nothing to research interests --
- [00:08:18.725]Oh, research interest.
- [00:08:19.948]So that's another myth, and there's other options
- [00:08:22.910]other than just doing research
- [00:08:24.302]and get an advanced degree as well.
- [00:08:25.939]So it seemed like everybody had something that's
- [00:08:28.905]kinda in that mystical arena of why not to
- [00:08:32.349]go to graduate school, so hopefully we can change your mind
- [00:08:35.482]over the course of these next couple of days.
- [00:08:39.198]So some of the reasons I came up with,
- [00:08:42.020]With the increase your earning potential,
- [00:08:43.402]which I think everybody likes money and can agree that
- [00:08:45.666]getting an advanced degree would
- [00:08:46.873]increase your earning potential.
- [00:08:49.292]Professional growth and development,
- [00:08:50.827]and the advancement of your career.
- [00:08:52.491]Again, with more knowledge you're able to
- [00:08:55.054]progress your career a lot faster than
- [00:08:57.887]some of your colleagues that don't have the
- [00:08:59.604]advanced or additional knowledge in their chosen field.
- [00:09:03.799]And then this is the most important one in my opinion,
- [00:09:06.467]you get to gain knowledge about a field that you enjoy
- [00:09:10.029]that you're passionate about, that you love.
- [00:09:11.758]And so, doin' that then is not really work.
- [00:09:15.225]You're just doin' what you like doin'.
- [00:09:17.674]You like playin' video games,
- [00:09:18.697]you get up, go play the video game.
- [00:09:19.865]That's not work.
- [00:09:24.632]So what's next in the graduate school process?
- [00:09:27.536]So what you need to do
- [00:09:29.185]when you start to look at graduate schools,
- [00:09:30.614]is research the ratings and reputation of graduate schools.
- [00:09:33.743]Like the Vice Chancellor said,
- [00:09:36.099]education these days is just about on an equal playin' field
- [00:09:39.478]so it's really a lot about where you go
- [00:09:42.483]has to do with your personality,
- [00:09:44.784]the culture of the university,
- [00:09:47.862]and the research opportunities.
- [00:09:49.761]And again, a lot graduate school is all about
- [00:09:54.074]what you put in.
- [00:09:55.066]Whatever you put in is whatchyou gonna get out.
- [00:09:56.859]So if you put a little bit in,
- [00:09:57.987]you're gonna get a little bit out.
- [00:09:59.025]You put a lot in, you're gonna get a lot out.
- [00:10:03.813]But to kinda segue back to this,
- [00:10:06.086]you need to look at what the university requirements are
- [00:10:09.377]for admission into the graduate program
- [00:10:11.288]in your field of study.
- [00:10:12.601]Different fields of study have different requirements.
- [00:10:16.021]You need to also look at the type of research
- [00:10:17.671]that's being conducted at those universities
- [00:10:20.011]and the professors conducting that particular research.
- [00:10:25.144]And then, what student services are available
- [00:10:28.656]at that respective program.
- [00:10:30.218]And then, this is the most important,
- [00:10:31.946]what kind of financial support can a student expect at
- [00:10:35.625]that particular university.
- [00:10:38.587]Make sense?
- [00:10:42.797]How much educational debt do graduate students leave with?
- [00:10:46.634]We need to aks that question.
- [00:10:47.701]That's a very important question.
- [00:10:49.302]How many students within the school or program
- [00:10:51.094]completes their plan of study,
- [00:10:52.848]completes their actual degree?
- [00:10:54.850]Sometimes people will go start a degree program,
- [00:10:57.985]and life happens,
- [00:10:59.310]and they don't get an opportunity to complete it,
- [00:11:01.365]or they put it on pause for a little while
- [00:11:03.002]to deal with their life situation,
- [00:11:04.263]and they come back and complete their degree program,
- [00:11:07.565]but that's very important
- [00:11:08.893]if you plan on goin' all the way through,
- [00:11:10.282]to say hey, how many people are you guys pushin' out
- [00:11:14.495]on a yearly basis?
- [00:11:16.273]How many years does it typically take
- [00:11:17.846]to complete your program of study or your degree program?
- [00:11:22.800]Again, the location of the university
- [00:11:24.867]and the associated college.
- [00:11:26.425]Where are the graduate employed?
- [00:11:28.871]Are the people that graduate from this degree program,
- [00:11:31.577]are a lot of your graduates goin' into research places,
- [00:11:34.603]are they goin' into academia
- [00:11:36.370]or are they goin' to private companies
- [00:11:38.946]workin'?
- [00:11:40.688]And then, this is another important one,
- [00:11:42.442]the university or program expectations.
- [00:11:45.136]Again, if you don't know the rules of the game goin' in,
- [00:11:47.083]how can you be successful?
- [00:11:48.672]So you wanna know what's gonna be the foundation
- [00:11:51.596]or the rules that you're gonna be playin' by.
- [00:11:57.418]And then, goin' on,
- [00:12:00.229]you're preparin' already to be successful
- [00:12:02.381]'cause you're here participatin' in this conference
- [00:12:04.423]to learn about graduate school.
- [00:12:06.753]So the next step would be,
- [00:12:08.128]if you really wanna pursue graduate school
- [00:12:09.640]is start, again, goin' through that list
- [00:12:11.485]narrowin' down some graduate schools
- [00:12:13.888]and start doin' campus visits, because again,
- [00:12:16.333]that will be the place that you will stay
- [00:12:18.087]at least for the next two years,
- [00:12:19.624]if not a little bit longer if you decide to go get a Ph.D.
- [00:12:23.484]So you're gonna be there for a while,
- [00:12:24.616]so you make sure that you're gonna enjoy the atmosphere
- [00:12:27.671]and again have a good time.
- [00:12:29.464]Even though you're a graduate student,
- [00:12:30.581]you're still a student.
- [00:12:31.674]You're gonna party,
- [00:12:34.142]do other things,
- [00:12:35.470]so you need to make sure they have the lifestyle
- [00:12:38.147]that you like to partake in.
- [00:12:42.335]You need to become familiar with deadlines
- [00:12:43.674]and timetables for submittin' your application.
- [00:12:46.014]You need to go ahead and create a purpose statement.
- [00:12:48.900]If you need to take GRE's, take your GRE's,
- [00:12:51.342]get your transcripts together,
- [00:12:53.828]resume,
- [00:12:55.296]letters of recommendation,
- [00:12:56.737]and most importantly look at the individual
- [00:12:58.975]GPA requirement for your individual universities.
- [00:13:02.005]The GPA requirement will vary
- [00:13:03.597]from university to university,
- [00:13:05.265]even in the same degree program,
- [00:13:08.760]so you wanna take note of that.
- [00:13:10.478]And now, most universities are givin' you options
- [00:13:13.897]if you don't meet a certain GPA requirement,
- [00:13:15.928]there are additional things you can do
- [00:13:17.951]because the GPA, resume, personal statement,
- [00:13:21.346]all makes up the whole package
- [00:13:23.189]so it's kind of a weighted average.
- [00:13:26.561]Yes. Thanks, sir.
- [00:13:28.342]I have a question about the GRE.
- [00:13:30.602]Or I had a couple questions to ask.
- [00:13:32.372]So, my first question is
- [00:13:35.881]when can, relative to when you're graduatin',
- [00:13:39.028]should you take the GRE?
- [00:13:40.937]And what is a good time range, would you say,
- [00:13:44.514]to start preparation for the GRE?
- [00:13:49.023]The GRE you can take anytime, I would say,
- [00:13:53.730]dependin' upon your major or study,
- [00:13:57.045]I would say a good time to start studyin' for the GRE,
- [00:13:59.683]probably the end of your junior year,
- [00:14:02.227]that summer goin' into your junior year,
- [00:14:04.377]I mean, goin' into your senior year.
- [00:14:05.871]And then the first part of your senior year,
- [00:14:07.548]as soon as you get back,
- [00:14:09.135]maybe August, September, October,
- [00:14:11.474]you actually take the GRE.
- [00:14:13.552]Again, when you take the GRE depends on,
- [00:14:15.919]again, what universities you want to apply to
- [00:14:19.545]for graduate school, because they have cut-off dates.
- [00:14:23.122]Some are earlier than others.
- [00:14:25.643]But if you wanna take it multiple times,
- [00:14:27.190]I would say at least your junior year,
- [00:14:29.767]first part of your senior year.
- [00:14:33.104]Yes, sir.
- [00:14:33.937]I'm not sure if I'm movin' ahead,
- [00:14:35.224]but when would be a good time to actually start
- [00:14:38.684]applyin' to grad schools?
- [00:14:41.061]So,
- [00:14:42.769]and Dr. Rilett probably can
- [00:14:46.440]elaborate a little bit more on this,
- [00:14:47.879]but most of your graduate application
- [00:14:49.841]depends on what semester you're tryin' to apply for.
- [00:14:52.622]For your fall application,
- [00:14:55.637]most universities want you to apply by the early spring,
- [00:14:59.409]so you can get accepted.
- [00:15:00.509]If you wanna do spring, it would be
- [00:15:03.127]either summer or fall at the latest.
- [00:15:07.359]That's the right answer?
- [00:15:10.197]But it depends on the university.
- [00:15:13.771]That's a great answer,
- [00:15:15.153]my advice is as soon as you are interested.
- [00:15:19.288]It doesn't hurt to email a professor,
- [00:15:20.806]it doesn't hurt to talk to people,
- [00:15:22.993]it doesn't hurt to visit ahead of time,
- [00:15:25.226]so they get to know you.
- [00:15:26.915]Because, we've talked about our research
- [00:15:30.448]getting paid to do the research,
- [00:15:32.064]there's also scholarships,
- [00:15:33.768]and the earlier you apply,
- [00:15:36.432]the more likely you are to get one of those scholarships.
- [00:15:40.057]Let's say the start day is September,
- [00:15:41.720]you can come here in August and say,
- [00:15:43.095]I wanna start in September, in three weeks.
- [00:15:46.595]And we might have an RA,
- [00:15:47.802]and we could hire you and we could do it really quickly,
- [00:15:50.156]but those scholarships would've been given out
- [00:15:51.885]eight months earlier.
- [00:15:54.179]So, the earlier the better,
- [00:15:56.556]'cause typically if it's the fall,
- [00:15:58.647]the deadline's January, February,
- [00:16:00.844]so doing everything in the previous fall makes sense.
- [00:16:04.388]And so, to piggyback off that,
- [00:16:07.953]a lot of that goes to, once you identify university,
- [00:16:10.334]you start that dialogue.
- [00:16:11.892]And then they will be able to tell you
- [00:16:13.439]what their funding cycles are.
- [00:16:16.277]Whether they get a lot of funding in the fall,
- [00:16:18.435]a lot of funding in the spring.
- [00:16:19.801]Again, that's probably one of the questions
- [00:16:21.177]you wanna aks, you know,
- [00:16:22.790]how are your students funding and where do you get
- [00:16:26.065]your most funding, and what's the best opportunity
- [00:16:28.004]for me to fit in?
- [00:16:29.444]Because it may be a situation where,
- [00:16:31.888]Let's say you do wanna work,
- [00:16:33.018]a life happened, and you wanna take a year or two off,
- [00:16:35.594]and you know they have the most funding
- [00:16:37.190]come in in the spring.
- [00:16:38.267]Well, instead of applyin' in the fall,
- [00:16:39.533]let's apply during the spring.
- [00:16:43.005]'Cause a lot of graduate students have a lot of people apply
- [00:16:45.353]in the fall and so there may be more funding available
- [00:16:48.292]in the spring.
- [00:16:49.529]That's right. And I have one more thing.
- [00:16:51.713]Don't be afraid to ask if
- [00:16:53.027]there's an opportunity to visit.
- [00:16:55.338]So if you wrote us today,
- [00:16:56.291]is there an opportunity to come up
- [00:16:57.482]and look at the school?
- [00:16:59.327]We would help fund that trip up
- [00:17:00.675]with the airfare and then come up,
- [00:17:02.708]meet the professors, see what opportunities are there.
- [00:17:05.918]And again, the earlier you're there, the better.
- [00:17:07.907]So we're gonna have a student coming up
- [00:17:09.470]from UT, Rio Grande Valley, in about a month
- [00:17:13.522]and he wants to come to grad school.
- [00:17:15.275]That's a long way. I lived in Texas for ten --
- [00:17:17.760]Texas is a long way from Nebraska, right?
- [00:17:20.876]And for this student, happens to be a young man,
- [00:17:24.315]he needs to come up and see the city.
- [00:17:26.356]He needs to see the people and meet the professors,
- [00:17:28.270]'cause it's really hard to say,
- [00:17:29.504]I'm gonna come to this place a thousand miles away
- [00:17:31.800]without visiting.
- [00:17:33.226]You really wanna go and visit everyone.
- [00:17:36.064]And so, I never did this when I was a student,
- [00:17:38.992]but yeah, we'll fly you out.
- [00:17:40.705]If you're interested, and we're interested in you,
- [00:17:43.373]we'll fly you out and we'll have a meeting.
- [00:17:45.297]And then you can make a more informed decision.
- [00:17:48.571]That again goes with earlier the better.
- [00:17:50.679]Yes.
- [00:17:52.588]Any other questions?
- [00:17:54.534]Good? Okay.
- [00:17:58.195]And then you wanna make sure
- [00:17:59.105]you fully understand the admissions process.
- [00:18:01.032]So again, part of fully understandin' admissions process
- [00:18:03.504]is when you do those visits, make those contacts,
- [00:18:06.205]make sure you aks the right questions.
- [00:18:08.949]Because again,
- [00:18:10.287]by havin' all your paperwork in,
- [00:18:11.625]every piece of paper that they need in,
- [00:18:12.948]in the time and the manner,
- [00:18:14.572]will help you get those funding opportunities.
- [00:18:16.824]And make sure if you really wanna get into
- [00:18:19.318]that particular grad school, you can get in.
- [00:18:24.324]The graduate admissions committee
- [00:18:25.755]is mostly comprised of professors,
- [00:18:28.662]the department, professors and researchers,
- [00:18:30.940]they evaluate each of the applications.
- [00:18:34.580]And the application that are submitted,
- [00:18:36.517]it's a competitive process.
- [00:18:37.935]So they'll have som many graduate slots
- [00:18:39.509]or funding opportunities available that they need to fill,
- [00:18:42.305]and so the best qualified candidates
- [00:18:44.526]is the ones that they extend offers to,
- [00:18:46.930]especially when it comes to gettin'
- [00:18:48.908]full-ride funding opportunities.
- [00:18:52.538]And then last, but not least,
- [00:18:53.909]follow up and be proactive.
- [00:18:57.137]So, make sure you follow up
- [00:18:58.967]to see where your application is.
- [00:19:02.518]Did you have a question there?
- [00:19:03.560]Yes. I'm sorry.
- [00:19:05.378]I'm sorry. What do you mean exactly by
- [00:19:08.310]competitive applications?
- [00:19:10.286]So, what I mean by competitive applications,
- [00:19:13.030]meaning they have a cut-off date,
- [00:19:15.370]and let's say everybody in this room
- [00:19:16.852]wants to come to UNL to
- [00:19:18.633]do somethin' in the Transportation Center.
- [00:19:21.546]Well, they may only have five available slots available
- [00:19:24.976]where they can give you full-funding.
- [00:19:26.874]And so again, if one of the reasons
- [00:19:28.939]for not going to graduate school is money,
- [00:19:31.476]your goal is to get as much money as possible.
- [00:19:33.904]You shouldn't have to pay for graduate school
- [00:19:35.873]because of research opportunities.
- [00:19:37.213]So, if your goal is to get one of those spots,
- [00:19:39.813]and those five spots are fully-funded,
- [00:19:44.108]the earlier you get your application to show interest,
- [00:19:47.456]the more likelihood that you'll get one of those five spots.
- [00:19:49.747]That's not to say you wouldn't get accepted
- [00:19:51.071]into their graduate program,
- [00:19:52.852]you would just get accepted into their graduate program
- [00:19:54.592]and they will say, we like you but,
- [00:19:56.893]we've only got two dollars to give to ya.
- [00:19:58.947]And you're gonna say, well two dollars
- [00:20:00.131]is not gonna cut it. I need...
- [00:20:02.133]I need sixteen thousand dollars.
- [00:20:03.313]I need you to pay for my tuition, books,
- [00:20:05.837]I like a little stipend.
- [00:20:07.674]Can you do a little bit better?
- [00:20:08.775]And they gonna say, well,
- [00:20:09.907]if you had applied a couple of months earlier,
- [00:20:12.847]then I could've given you sixteen thousand dollars,
- [00:20:15.707]or whatever that tuition, books, and stipend amount is.
- [00:20:19.630]So that means now you gotta deal with life
- [00:20:21.661]and try to go to school at the same time.
- [00:20:23.634]If you really wanna be at UNL.
- [00:20:25.222]Or, go to another university that has money
- [00:20:28.952]or funding available for you.
- [00:20:33.147]Did that answer your question?
- [00:20:36.420]So we're kind of wrapping this up.
- [00:20:38.478]Attending graduate school offers tangible
- [00:20:40.479]and intangible opportunities,
- [00:20:42.716]earning potential is higher than those with
- [00:20:44.316]just a bachelor's degree.
- [00:20:45.638]Understanding factors that you should consider prior
- [00:20:49.280]to starting your application
- [00:20:51.017]will greatly enhance your opportunities
- [00:20:53.485]for putting together a very competitive application.
- [00:20:57.295]And then you just need to be proactive
- [00:20:59.039]about the investment being made into your graduate studies.
- [00:21:02.416]Again, you're gonna invest hours fillin' out applications
- [00:21:05.536]for graduate school just like you did
- [00:21:06.891]when you were applying to undergraduate school.
- [00:21:08.980]It's the very same process.
- [00:21:10.517]The only thing that makes it a little bit differently
- [00:21:13.313]is that at a lot of graduate programs,
- [00:21:15.781]funding is available,
- [00:21:17.131]and so you're not only competin' just to get in,
- [00:21:19.314]you're also competin' for those funding opportunities.
- [00:21:25.233]That concludes my presentation.
