- [00:00:03.480]Welcome back, Canada Kick Off
- [00:00:04.467]here in the Huskers Sports Network, Nebraska Today,
- [00:00:06.289]ready to take on the Northwestern Wildcats
- [00:00:07.702]in time for our weekly chat with Chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:00:10.770]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:12.175]and you brought a special guest,
- [00:00:13.321]athletic director Bill Moos.
- [00:00:14.485]It's been a crazy couple of weeks for you.
- [00:00:17.342]You had to, you decided to make a change
- [00:00:19.489]at that role at the university in the athletic department,
- [00:00:21.904]and I know you are thrilled with the decision.
- [00:00:23.727]We sure are, Greg.
- [00:00:25.016]You know, so Bill has now been on the job
- [00:00:28.278]a little under two weeks.
- [00:00:30.345]I think tomorrow will be the two week point
- [00:00:32.039]from when we made the announcement
- [00:00:34.153]that he would be coming to the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:35.790]as our new athletic director,
- [00:00:37.740]and we could not have been more excited about that,
- [00:00:39.783]and about bringing him here to work
- [00:00:43.088]in leading our athletics program to new levels
- [00:00:45.516]and leadership nationally that we all aspire to
- [00:00:48.359]and are looking forward to.
- [00:00:49.740]Bill has hit the ground running.
- [00:00:51.788]He's met a lot of people,
- [00:00:53.646]he's been getting his hands around a large organization
- [00:00:57.825]and Husker Athletics is over 300 employees
- [00:01:00.298]and fielding over 20 teams, you know,
- [00:01:04.124]in our athletics program,
- [00:01:05.592]and the facilities and the people,
- [00:01:08.541]and he's been out with a lot of folks too.
- [00:01:11.740]I was at a couple of different receptions with him
- [00:01:14.412]this week and last week,
- [00:01:16.587]so could not be more pleased that Bill's here,
- [00:01:18.874]equally pleased that Kendra, his wife,
- [00:01:20.764]is part of that equation,
- [00:01:22.856]that we're getting to know as well.
- [00:01:24.238]So welcome to Bill Moos.
- [00:01:25.515]Great to have him here.
- [00:01:26.517]About ready to experience your first
- [00:01:27.627]Husker football home game.
- [00:01:29.016]You were at the game at Purdue last week,
- [00:01:30.537]but I'm sure you're anxious to see a home game
- [00:01:32.684]and see all the theatrics of that.
- [00:01:35.240]What has the last couple of weeks been like for you?
- [00:01:37.980]Has it been educational, have you learned a lot?
- [00:01:39.789]Well yeah, I've met a lot of people.
- [00:01:41.917]I've spent a lot of time with the media as well,
- [00:01:44.647]getting to know my staff and these great fans,
- [00:01:48.070]and what I'm really looking forward with this home game
- [00:01:51.469]is to see the fans in action.
- [00:01:54.016]I got to see the Huskers in action
- [00:01:55.905]and I'm looking forward to watching us again at this game,
- [00:02:00.387]but to see the fans and all the,
- [00:02:03.824]all the reputation that this fan base has
- [00:02:07.030]as being so supportive and that's going
- [00:02:09.713]to be really exciting for me.
- [00:02:11.373]Have you gotten a sense of what the fans are thinking?
- [00:02:13.924]I mean there's obviously great passion
- [00:02:15.808]towards Huskers sports, and in particular, football.
- [00:02:18.815]There's probably a certain amount of frustration right now
- [00:02:20.719]as well with the team at four and four.
- [00:02:23.041]Well they're used to championship caliber teams
- [00:02:28.043]and certainly that's what
- [00:02:29.587]the University of Nebraska deserves,
- [00:02:31.250]and that all rolls into really my observations
- [00:02:35.487]and trying to get a feel for things,
- [00:02:37.908]and while maybe we can do some things
- [00:02:40.723]a little bit different, maybe a lot different,
- [00:02:42.520]we don't know yet, so I'm looking forward to today
- [00:02:45.887]and having a real good feel for most of all,
- [00:02:50.859]just the game day activities and all the fun
- [00:02:54.028]that goes along with it and meeting more and more people.
- [00:02:57.060]You have a great reputation of being
- [00:02:58.662]a program builder at various stops,
- [00:03:00.903]whether it was Washington State or Oregon,
- [00:03:02.666]Montana before that as well.
- [00:03:03.666]Can you describe what you kind of vision
- [00:03:06.089]for being an athletic director here at Nebraska
- [00:03:08.042]is going to be like?
- [00:03:09.192]Well a lot of the pieces are already in place here,
- [00:03:11.838]and it's very impressive.
- [00:03:13.681]We've got excellent leadership in Chancellor Green
- [00:03:17.038]and President Bounds, and as I start to meet my staff,
- [00:03:22.044]I see people that are very engaged and very proud
- [00:03:26.766]to be Huskers,
- [00:03:28.476]and so that's all in place.
- [00:03:30.926]The facilities are in place,
- [00:03:32.804]the table, in many regards, is all set,
- [00:03:35.371]and we need to come in and adjust a couple things,
- [00:03:39.842]in my opinion.
- [00:03:40.841]I'll get a better feel for that in the ensuing two weeks,
- [00:03:44.486]three weeks from now,
- [00:03:45.717]but it's not going to be as long of a process,
- [00:03:50.233]anything that we do, as I've been used to in the past.
- [00:03:54.982]You know, this is a,
- [00:03:57.257]there's no professional sports team
- [00:03:58.519]in the state of Nebraska, so I think,
- [00:04:00.148]and the chancellor would probably agree with this,
- [00:04:02.619]about everybody in the state kind of feels
- [00:04:04.091]like they have a little bit of ownership
- [00:04:05.393]of the Husker program.
- [00:04:06.511]I'm sure maybe you have sensed a little bit of that,
- [00:04:08.600]even just in a couple of weeks.
- [00:04:09.979]Well my colleagues would long for that,
- [00:04:13.337]and there's no pro franchises, as you said.
- [00:04:18.167]There's just one university that's Power Five,
- [00:04:24.962]and everywhere you go, you see red,
- [00:04:26.916]and you couldn't write something better than that
- [00:04:30.570]for an athletic director to step into,
- [00:04:32.567]so I feel very, very fortunate.
- [00:04:35.211]Ronnie, when you made the change,
- [00:04:36.631]you were looking for more competitiveness across the board.
- [00:04:39.751]Bill certainly has a record of that behind him as well,
- [00:04:42.263]and I know his vision was a big reason
- [00:04:45.086]why he's sitting here as the current director.
- [00:04:47.221]Absolutely.
- [00:04:48.220]I mean we made it clear that in making the change
- [00:04:51.469]in leadership of our athletics program,
- [00:04:53.802]that we were aspiring to that level of competitiveness
- [00:04:56.429]that we believe Nebraska is and deserves,
- [00:05:00.683]and across all sports.
- [00:05:02.924]We made that very clear that we're looking across
- [00:05:04.942]all the sports that we field.
- [00:05:06.617]Football is a big deal here,
- [00:05:08.265]like we all know and believe and value,
- [00:05:10.304]but across all of our sports,
- [00:05:13.199]we want to aspire to that level of competitiveness,
- [00:05:15.498]and Bill has that history, he has that experience.
- [00:05:18.711]You can't meet him and not feel that
- [00:05:21.373]and feel that drive and that desire for competitiveness.
- [00:05:25.517]You know I've been catching a lot of grief
- [00:05:26.539]because a lot of folks say, well you hired him
- [00:05:28.014]because he's a beef guy.
- [00:05:29.111]Aren't you a beef guy?
- [00:05:30.780]And I said well it certainly didn't hurt anything,
- [00:05:32.159]it didn't hurt anything in Nebraska,
- [00:05:34.312]but no, we could not be more excited
- [00:05:36.610]about the leadership he's going to bring
- [00:05:38.419]to the department, and today, as he said,
- [00:05:41.102]he's going to get his first opportunity
- [00:05:42.346]to see the third largest city in Nebraska on game day
- [00:05:45.806]and all the fanfare that goes with that
- [00:05:48.523]from the greatest fan base in all of college sports.
- [00:05:51.378]Got to get him a balloon so he can have
- [00:05:52.876]a balloon to carry around and let go of.
- [00:05:53.886]Absolutely right, absolutely right.
- [00:05:55.750]Well it's going to be great.
- [00:05:56.750]Great to see you, Bill.
- [00:05:57.752]Thanks so much, appreciate it.
