- [00:00:04.637]We're really blessed at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:07.828]to have some amazing talent, and so the opportunity
- [00:00:11.966]for our faculty to be recognized can only
- [00:00:15.516]enhance the reputation of the university
- [00:00:19.438]and the quality of the instruction,
- [00:00:22.047]the quality of the research and the contributions
- [00:00:25.043]that the university is making to the world as a whole.
- [00:00:29.548]I was fortunate to be nominated early in my career
- [00:00:32.097]for several awards for my two professional societies
- [00:00:35.063]which recognize young scientists.
- [00:00:38.087]It really gets you on the radar for
- [00:00:41.678]other faculty that would be interested
- [00:00:45.104]in doing research with you, interested
- [00:00:48.137]in sending graduate students your way.
- [00:00:51.435]When I was named the National Academy of Interest fellow,
- [00:00:54.716]I traveled to their conference
- [00:00:56.766]and made a lot of strong connections since then.
- [00:01:00.420]I've published in their journal since this time
- [00:01:03.519]and I'm actually talking to them
- [00:01:05.139]about collaborating on a book.
- [00:01:07.237]For faculty to be tenured and promoted,
- [00:01:12.286]their peers really need to see that they
- [00:01:14.668]have been recognized on a regional and a national level.
- [00:01:19.452]It is pretty critical for their careers
- [00:01:22.002]in moving up through the ranks.
- [00:01:24.353]I know a lot of faculty probably think
- [00:01:26.249]it's not worth the effort to apply for national awards
- [00:01:28.911]or encourage others to apply for national awards,
- [00:01:31.061]but in my case it's just been wonderful.
- [00:01:33.679]I've made great connections.
- [00:01:35.284]It's just been a really boost to my career.
- [00:01:39.719]Having, you know, a category now of national awards won
- [00:01:43.106]is a way that a department and a career are judged.
- [00:01:45.987]It's something that we feature on our webpage, for example,
- [00:01:48.467]it's something we feature for graduate student recruiting
- [00:01:51.732]and for undergraduate student recruiting,
- [00:01:53.792]and then also research awards.
- [00:01:55.855]Anything that highlights our scholarship,
- [00:01:58.472]that's probably most important for graduate student
- [00:02:00.995]recruiting and for recruiting new faculty.
- [00:02:03.630]It is hard for a lot of people to do this,
- [00:02:05.463]because you have to put yourself out there.
- [00:02:07.629]I meet with every faculty member at least once a year
- [00:02:10.147]to talk about goals and that's a time when we talk about
- [00:02:12.915]are there any awards, and if yes, we'll strategize.
- [00:02:15.701]You do some research on more senior people in the discipline
- [00:02:18.817]and we figure out what awards they've won
- [00:02:20.664]over the years and we track those awards.
- [00:02:24.955]We also track the deadlines, I think that's the other thing.
- [00:02:27.278]I know when those deadlines are every year.
- [00:02:29.501]In our department, we try to make it really clear that
- [00:02:31.645]if I win an award, it's great, but it also reflects on
- [00:02:34.852]all of my colleagues, my department, college and university.
- [00:02:38.553]I've been very fortunate to have that opportunity to
- [00:02:41.414]receive some awards like that and it's quite a good feeling,
- [00:02:46.431]but the biggest feeling is knowing that
- [00:02:49.893]you've accomplished what the award is about, right?
- [00:02:54.079]That you've had that impact.
