The Confucius Institute at the University of Nebraska is a window to Chinese culture and language. The institute offers Chinese language classes, study abroad opportunities, study abroad programs and other experiences that help bridge the gap between two countries on opposite sides of the world.

- [00:00:07.629]is an open door to language, culture, and education abroad.
- [00:00:12.368]China is a very important partner internationally
- [00:00:14.589]for the U.S., so we need the community to know more
- [00:00:18.968]about China, the cultures, and languages especially.

- [00:00:24.229]Established at UNL in 2007,
- [00:00:26.949]the Confucius Institute is a partnership with
- [00:00:29.619]Xi'an Jiaotong University in China.
- [00:00:32.368]It's part of a global network
- [00:00:34.128]of partnerships supported by Hanban,
- [00:00:36.379]the international Chinese Language Council.
- [00:00:39.149]
- [00:00:42.419]and we use CI, not only as a platform for
- [00:00:46.789]teaching Chinese language and holding cultural activities,
- [00:00:50.557]but also as a platform for bridging these two universities
- [00:00:55.008]in other academic fields as well.
- [00:00:57.488]The Confucius Institute is a non-profit
- [00:01:00.288]academic organization that really tries to introduce
- [00:01:04.019]China to the Nebraskan population.
- [00:01:07.144]In particular, we focus on the
- [00:01:09.229]teaching of the Chinese language.

- [00:01:12.909]Chinese is taught across the state
- [00:01:15.109]at public schools, in class, and online.

- [00:01:20.619]It's not primarily just language,
- [00:01:22.459]it's kind of the culture as well.

- [00:01:25.720]I just wish the Confucius Institute can grow
- [00:01:27.989]bigger and better and we'll have
- [00:01:30.407]more teachers and students join the program
- [00:01:33.888]to learn about Chinese culture, and also
- [00:01:36.989]to extend our friendship worldwide.
- [00:01:41.026]Community classes are also
- [00:01:42.422]offered for all age groups.
- [00:01:44.423]We've really enjoyed having
- [00:01:46.325]teachers who are native speakers.
- [00:01:48.851]Some of the teachers have been really helpful with
- [00:01:51.245]the children, bringing more music or art into the classroom.

- [00:01:58.834]shares Chinese culture with Nebraska.
- [00:02:01.683]A variety of activities and events include
- [00:02:04.394]cooking classes, film festivals, annual celebrations
- [00:02:08.063]of Chinese holidays, and seminars taught by experts.
- [00:02:11.982]Companies are global.
- [00:02:13.965]Opportunities are there.
- [00:02:15.325]And if you know languages, and their culture,
- [00:02:19.223]then you'll be the first in line to get the job.
- [00:02:21.973]Nebraskans also have the opportunity
- [00:02:24.685]to visit China through the Confucius Institute.
- [00:02:27.543]College and high school students can see China
- [00:02:30.462]and learn the language through study abroad programs.
- [00:02:33.893]Scholarships help defray the costs for qualifying students.
- [00:02:38.467]It was the first opportunity to go there
- [00:02:40.994]on scholarship, have everything completely funded,
- [00:02:44.082]including my tuition and my room and board.
- [00:02:47.503]Through the educators' tour,
- [00:02:49.451]school principals and other Nebraska officials
- [00:02:52.010]deepen their understanding of China.
- [00:02:54.562]It's so wonderful that the Confucius Institute
- [00:02:58.891]gives all of Nebraska this opportunity
- [00:03:02.212]to be exposed to this country with a 5,000 year history.
- [00:03:06.834]UNL's Confucius Institute ranks among
- [00:03:10.143]the most successful worldwide,
- [00:03:12.211]and has earned international recognition for excellence.
