- [00:00:05.194]12 students from Germany
- [00:00:06.571]are visiting CEHS October 14th through the 28th.
- [00:00:11.129]Their visit is sponsored by the German American
- [00:00:13.621]Fulbright Commissions Diversity and Integration
- [00:00:16.590]in the Classroom Project.
- [00:00:19.089]All of the students are first generation Germans
- [00:00:21.831]with a family background of immigration to Germany.
- [00:00:25.471]Most are in teacher preparation programs
- [00:00:28.119]and some are currently teaching,
- [00:00:30.248]but they are all learning about and experiencing
- [00:00:32.809]U.S. education.
- [00:00:34.969]Last week, students met with Ali Moeller,
- [00:00:37.759]Edith Greer Professor in Teaching Learning
- [00:00:39.686]and Teacher Education.
- [00:00:41.448]She's an international expert in foreign language
- [00:00:44.379]education and second language acquisition.
- [00:00:47.808]Most of them in their essay
- [00:00:49.069]said the reason they were doing this
- [00:00:50.709]was because some teacher touched them
- [00:00:53.879]and made them realize how capable they would be
- [00:00:56.814]and they want to pass it forward.
- [00:00:58.696]Which was very touching.
- [00:01:00.598]Yeah.
- [00:01:01.878]Moeller's childhood experiences
- [00:01:03.627]as a German immigrant to the U.S.,
- [00:01:05.788]captivated the visitors.
- [00:01:07.400]She shared her own story of how a teacher used
- [00:01:10.420]the power of language to build a relationship
- [00:01:12.897]and make a difference in her life.
- [00:01:14.990]Moeller encouraged students to do the same
- [00:01:17.422]and to use language as a lens to understand
- [00:01:20.689]different cultures.
- [00:01:22.569]I can learn a lot from it,
- [00:01:25.201]from what I see and what I observe
- [00:01:27.664]and from the conversations we have
- [00:01:30.672]with these fantastic professors and teachers.
- [00:01:35.274]I feel like yesterday we were at this St. Mary School
- [00:01:39.493]and what I observed there is that
- [00:01:41.794]the teachers are so committed to their students
- [00:01:46.801]and they are so passionate about teaching.
- [00:01:49.754]Good take away, it is a quote I got here,
- [00:01:53.253]it's if you know better, you do better.
- [00:01:56.784]I really love that one.
- [00:01:58.640]The German students are observing
- [00:02:00.224]classrooms in Lincoln Public Schools
- [00:02:02.394]and learning other aspects of Nebraska culture.
- [00:02:05.952]The young Germans have been engaging
- [00:02:07.961]with CEHS students and faculty as well.
- [00:02:10.851]It's hoped that these interactions
- [00:02:12.643]will foster new relationships
- [00:02:14.731]and perhaps motivate CEHS faculty and students
- [00:02:17.992]to pursue their own education abroad opportunities
- [00:02:21.451]in German schools.
