- [00:00:00.000]Greg Sharpe back at our Huskers Sports Network studios,
- [00:00:02.156]we're between sets two and three of the Huskers matchup
- [00:00:04.364]with the final line eye. And we're joined by University of
- [00:00:07.241]Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:09.397]We talk all the time on our sports programs about
- [00:00:11.618]recruiting student athletes from across the United States,
- [00:00:13.963]even around the world. Not so different than recruiting
- [00:00:17.023]everyday students for you as well.
- [00:00:18.809]And welcoming students from all across the globe
- [00:00:21.176]and including them in great activities here.
- [00:00:23.813]What can you tell us about a recent study
- [00:00:25.696]that you did on this very topic?
- [00:00:27.374]Well you know Greg, when we talk about the
- [00:00:29.890]26,000 plus students that are studying with us
- [00:00:32.948]across the university every year.
- [00:00:35.634]Well that population is a little bit more diverse
- [00:00:39.677]and where they come from and there backgrounds.
- [00:00:42.693]And this year is no exception to that.
- [00:00:45.559]Eleven percent of our students currently are from
- [00:00:47.902]outside the United States. From all over the world.
- [00:00:51.263]We have about 15 percent of our freshman class
- [00:00:54.246]this year that are minority students
- [00:00:57.212]and underrepresented minority is the biggest number
- [00:01:00.579]for that statistic ever in our history.
- [00:01:03.396]So we are continuing to see more and more
- [00:01:05.673]diverse student body.
- [00:01:08.509]This past year, we had the good fortune of hiring
- [00:01:12.143]Rona Halualani who runs a consulting firm,
- [00:01:15.642]called Halualani & Associates.
- [00:01:18.015]One of the leading experts in the field of higher education
- [00:01:21.278]around diversity and inclusion.
- [00:01:23.233]And developing more diverse university environments.
- [00:01:27.323]They came and they studied us for
- [00:01:29.572]the best part of the year, almost 11 months.
- [00:01:32.365]Looking at every aspect of the university
- [00:01:34.340]in terms of our enrollment, in terms of programs
- [00:01:36.636]that we have, activities that we have,
- [00:01:38.709]student life that we have, hiring and the way we go
- [00:01:42.311]about hiring of our faculty and staff.
- [00:01:44.461]Looking at diversity of our faculty and staff as well.
- [00:01:48.157]They just reported out to us here a few weeks ago
- [00:01:52.081]the result of that nearly year long study.
- [00:01:56.508]And basically told us we are making great strides
- [00:01:59.902]in becoming more diverse as a university community.
- [00:02:04.071]And that we have lots of activities that are very good
- [00:02:07.597]going on across our campus. But that they could be
- [00:02:10.504]a little better coordinated. When you have a place with
- [00:02:13.035]nine academic colleges and a big campus like we have,
- [00:02:16.240]we have activities that aren't necessarily as coordinated
- [00:02:20.005]as they could be or as strategic as they could be.
- [00:02:22.368]And encouraged us to look at that hard and think about
- [00:02:26.156]ways that we can improve this area in the future.
- [00:02:29.897]Let's talk about that a little bit more.
- [00:02:31.819]What are the next steps now that you have this study back?
- [00:02:34.800]Well, the first thing we're looking at is developing an
- [00:02:38.168]office that will report to our executive vice chancellor
- [00:02:41.892]and chief academic officer, Donde Plowman.
- [00:02:45.586]Who will serve in the roll of excellence in
- [00:02:49.630]inclusion and diversity. So we will have a lead person
- [00:02:52.720]on campus for that area. Currently we have
- [00:02:55.380]a few people spread around the campus but not really
- [00:02:59.125]a cohesive leadership kind of team.
- [00:03:02.142]So we will go about setting that office up here.
- [00:03:04.607]In the lighter half of this year, I will be beginning
- [00:03:07.972]after the first of the calendar year. To lead those efforts
- [00:03:11.064]across all of our nine academic colleges.
- [00:03:13.147]One of the things we'll ask that team to do in that office
- [00:03:16.801]is to develop a really coordinated plan to get it that
- [00:03:20.109]kind of putting things together, more cohesively for us
- [00:03:23.863]across the campus. Where the goal would be for
- [00:03:26.578]us to reflect. You know the increasing diversity that we see
- [00:03:30.704]even in Nebraska. And reflect the demographic
- [00:03:34.512]there that we want our campus to reflect.
- [00:03:37.902]So very excited about these, the report,
- [00:03:40.303]the Halualani at work, and moving forward
- [00:03:43.692]in this area for the university in the future.
- [00:03:46.321]Very good. Well thank you for updating us on this
- [00:03:48.532]important topic as we move through
- [00:03:50.502]and move forward as a university.
- [00:03:51.793]Great to see you and let's go win this volleyball match.
- [00:03:54.755]Yeah go Big Red and beat the alanah.
- [00:03:56.782]We've got more of our Husker volleyball
- [00:03:58.976]coverage coming up next.
