- [00:00:01.021]Charles Wood has spent his career
- [00:00:02.581]studying HIV/AIDS.
- [00:00:05.108]Along the way he founded a new virology center at Nebraska.
- [00:00:09.149]His work in the African nation of Zambia
- [00:00:11.848]started out in an office.
- [00:00:14.429]When we first started, we don't have anything,
- [00:00:16.251]we just had an office with my partner.
- [00:00:18.317]Zambia is ground zero
- [00:00:19.775]for the AIDS epidemic,
- [00:00:21.168]so the need for a research infrastructure was critical.
- [00:00:24.782]Over two decades Wood oversaw the building
- [00:00:26.967]of a lab and clinic
- [00:00:28.371]in Zambia and training for scholars and scientists.
- [00:00:32.199]It's very, very important
- [00:00:34.229]to have sustained support,
- [00:00:37.002]sustained collaborations
- [00:00:38.947]and sustained facility.
- [00:00:41.483]If you don't have that,
- [00:00:42.773]you really not able to continue
- [00:00:46.021]what you have started.
- [00:00:47.873]Whether it's research into viruses,
- [00:00:49.849]food security or education,
- [00:00:52.169]a long-term approach is needed
- [00:00:54.114]to tackle complex challenges.
- [00:00:56.913]Investments that have been made for decades
- [00:00:59.798]in building research programs
- [00:01:01.943]and investing in faculty and talent
- [00:01:05.439]take 10 or 20 years to begin to see the real fruits
- [00:01:08.974]of those investments
- [00:01:11.178]and we have a whole host of those around the campus.
- [00:01:13.965]The results of research
- [00:01:15.067]are not always clear early on
- [00:01:17.488]but long-term commitment
- [00:01:18.791]has the potential to change the world.
- [00:01:21.764]For example, early research into gene editing technology
- [00:01:25.376]could lead to advances in medicine and agriculture
- [00:01:28.709]down the road.
- [00:01:30.247]These new techniques that we have
- [00:01:32.552]allow us to understand the biology
- [00:01:35.074]at the molecular level.
- [00:01:36.872]Once we know what those reactions are,
- [00:01:39.179]then we can begin to manipulate those systems
- [00:01:42.137]with various genetic modifications
- [00:01:45.706]that allow us to cope with those disease problems
- [00:01:50.001]be that in humans or plants or animals.
- [00:01:54.118]For Charles Wood,
- [00:01:55.117]the return on investment includes advancements
- [00:01:57.700]in disease treatment, prevention and management.
- [00:02:01.513]The information we generated
- [00:02:02.978]can have public health importance
- [00:02:05.281]and moreover, we're able to bring and teach
- [00:02:08.329]or train the next generation of researchers.
- [00:02:11.476]I think this is really what I'm proud of
- [00:02:13.215]and changing the research atmosphere
- [00:02:15.537]and be able to help the people.
