- [00:00:03.096]Hello, from University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:05.962]Each spring, I teach Women in the Quran,
- [00:00:08.933]a junior level course dedicated to discussing,
- [00:00:12.235]learning about, and understanding one of the most basic,
- [00:00:16.472]yet one of the most misunderstood topics in Islam.
- [00:00:20.152]To show you how we do it here in Nebraska,
- [00:00:22.636]let's visit my classroom.
- [00:00:24.912]They were able to get over their religious selves,
- [00:00:28.236]Christians and Jews and Arabs and everything.
- [00:00:31.284]So we have religious freedom that allowed for
- [00:00:35.364]open debates, open discussions.
- [00:00:38.993]In my course, Women in the Quran,
- [00:00:41.742]I join my students each year
- [00:00:44.201]in a new academic adventure.
- [00:00:46.488]We explore some of the most challenging questions
- [00:00:49.743]on women's status and gender rights in Islam.
- [00:00:53.377]I would recommend this to other students because
- [00:00:57.023]you learn so much more than you think you're going to.
- [00:01:00.356]We delve into the history, the current,
- [00:01:03.046]the present, the future.
- [00:01:05.633]Our resource is the Quran,
- [00:01:07.417]and our analytic investigation leaves
- [00:01:09.957]no relevant question behind.
- [00:01:13.927]The class is student-centered, and my philosophy of teaching
- [00:01:18.330]prioritizes discussions, group work, and student engagement.
- [00:01:23.289]It was also interesting.
- [00:01:24.221]He mentions the possibility of peace.
- [00:01:26.245]Because he offered peace.
- [00:01:27.729]Whether you take the class in person
- [00:01:30.017]or via distance, there are many opportunities
- [00:01:32.915]to collaborate with your classmates
- [00:01:35.113]and me as your professor.
- [00:01:37.377]Abla is an amazing teacher.
- [00:01:39.183]She just really gives us the opportunity to discuss.
- [00:01:41.945]She gives us the chance to just talk about ideas.
- [00:01:45.119]You'll be part of a learning community
- [00:01:47.432]involving all of us collectively
- [00:01:49.848]to understand what the Quran really says about women.
- [00:01:53.782]And it's very easy for us to discuss
- [00:01:55.460]ideas and topics that come up.
- [00:01:58.254]Our investigation involves
- [00:02:00.140]not only the critical analysis of the Quranic text,
- [00:02:03.222]but also the history of interpreting that text,
- [00:02:06.542]both in the Islamic exegetical tradition
- [00:02:09.187]and in the Western academia.
- [00:02:11.751]We will answer questions of gender equality in Islam,
- [00:02:15.213]polygamy, women's right to prophethood,
- [00:02:17.940]women's right to public authority positions,
- [00:02:20.767]women's right to education and work,
- [00:02:23.481]whether the Quran really commends domestic violence,
- [00:02:26.713]and what does hijab really represent.
- [00:02:30.163]The class is your chance to have your questions answered
- [00:02:33.683]in a professional academic environment,
- [00:02:36.222]free from both ideological commitments
- [00:02:38.915]and media-created stereotypes.
- [00:02:41.753]I love this class because you never really realize
- [00:02:45.125]what you don't know about a culture until
- [00:02:47.676]you're learning about it.
- [00:02:48.930]There's so many different stereotypes that
- [00:02:50.842]we're delving into.
- [00:02:52.114]It just lets you have a different perspective
- [00:02:55.185]on a culture that we've never really been able to
- [00:02:57.833]look into or learn.
- [00:02:59.315]The course, Women in the Quran,
- [00:03:00.891]is cross-listed here at the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:04.389]with these departments and programs.
- [00:03:07.884]William Shakespeare once said,
- [00:03:09.875]"There is no darkness but ignorance."
- [00:03:12.084]Join me as we unfold a largely ignored face of the Quran,
- [00:03:16.247]and uncover the true story of women in the Quran.
