- [00:00:04.699]We've been blessed these last ten years
- [00:00:07.120]to have been one of the best Confucius Institutes
- [00:00:10.259]in the U.S.
- [00:00:11.368]It's a connector.
- [00:00:12.320]It's a new world.
- [00:00:13.429]All the opportunities it's opened up for me.
- [00:00:16.006]Captivating and life changing.
- [00:00:19.088]It's grown each and every year.
- [00:00:20.537]I am really glad that they opened up shop here
- [00:00:23.539]in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:00:25.451](Calming Music)
- [00:00:26.828]We were one of the first 20 Confucius Institutes
- [00:00:29.838]established in the United States.
- [00:00:31.846]I was fortunate enough to be Chancellor when
- [00:00:34.697]this initiative arose.
- [00:00:37.006]I was able to eventually go to Hanban and
- [00:00:40.478]sign the agreement.
- [00:00:41.668]We're very pleased that how it's come out.
- [00:00:45.310](Speaking Chinese)
- [00:00:46.396]The Confucius Institute is actually a partnership
- [00:00:49.006]between the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:51.705]and our partner Institution Xi'An Jiaotong University.
- [00:00:55.676]Founded in 1896, Jiaotong is one of the key
- [00:01:00.494]Universities in China.
- [00:01:02.534]We used XI', not only as a platform for teaching
- [00:01:06.349]Chinese language and holding cultural activities,
- [00:01:09.894]but also as a platform for bridging this to Universities
- [00:01:13.876]in other academic fields as well.
- [00:01:16.404]We need the community to know more about China.
- [00:01:19.534]To better understand our partners in China,
- [00:01:22.974]our colleagues in China.
- [00:01:24.886]And they can get to know a different culture.
- [00:01:28.046](Speaking Chinese)
- [00:01:29.766]We teach Chinese across the state.
- [00:01:32.276]We teach young and old.
- [00:01:33.596]Most of our teachers are experienced, professional
- [00:01:36.436]teachers and when they come here to the U.S.,
- [00:01:38.566]they also go through continuous training.
- [00:01:41.316]I think it's really a great opportunity for the kids
- [00:01:44.558]here to learn about the outside world.
- [00:01:48.438]To tap into the fastest growing second language
- [00:01:51.745]in the United States.
- [00:01:52.758](Speaking Chinese)
- [00:01:54.278]There's a purpose for my life in this world,
- [00:01:56.398]and I'm just doing that.
- [00:01:58.267]So that's the most exciting part.
- [00:02:00.358]We've really enjoyed having teachers
- [00:02:03.017]who are native speakers.
- [00:02:05.149]The way globalization is going, Chinese is going to be
- [00:02:07.905]just as useful of a language as German or Spanish.
- [00:02:12.246](Speaking Chinese)
- [00:02:13.795]It's not primarily just language, it's kind of
- [00:02:15.883]the culture as well.
- [00:02:17.753]We need to expose them to the global culture,
- [00:02:21.060]so I think they'll be ready for the future.
- [00:02:24.014](Musical Instrument)
- [00:02:25.646]With the language comes the knowledge of the culture
- [00:02:27.897]you're dealing with.
- [00:02:28.857]We've been involved in some of the cooking classes
- [00:02:30.617]that they've offered, which has
- [00:02:32.206]been a lot of fun. Delicious.
- [00:02:34.255]It enriches the experience to know about the language,
- [00:02:38.386]and the art, and the history.
- [00:02:40.424]This really brings the country of China and what
- [00:02:44.076]it represents into the classroom, so that our students
- [00:02:46.748]really have a living example.
- [00:02:48.687]We had lectures from members of the Confucius Institute,
- [00:02:52.807]we've had performances.
- [00:02:54.386]It helped me gain a better understanding of Asian culture
- [00:02:57.484]and history.
- [00:02:58.876]It's so wonderful that the Confucius Institute
- [00:03:03.891]gives all of Nebraska this opportunity to be exposed to
- [00:03:07.625]this country with a 5,000 year history.
- [00:03:10.655](Calming Music)
- [00:03:13.455]During my time in China, I studied at
- [00:03:15.549]Xi'An Jiaontong University.
- [00:03:17.290]We have a number of scholarships that are offered
- [00:03:18.680]to students.
- [00:03:19.669]We have master degree programs in China, we also have
- [00:03:23.029]one year study abroad in China for language study,
- [00:03:27.090]we also offer for high school students,
- [00:03:29.570]the China Bridge Summer Camp.
- [00:03:32.090]I just loved everything: the food, and the people,
- [00:03:35.578]and I met so many great people.
- [00:03:37.570]I think the benefit for students are clearly personal
- [00:03:40.141]growth, better understanding of the world around them.
- [00:03:43.618]You know it's great for the community to have some
- [00:03:46.760]of it's leadership exposed directly to Chinese culture
- [00:03:51.002]through cultural trips to Beijing and other cities.
- [00:03:54.579]And to realize so many positive benefits
- [00:03:59.151]of our engagement with them on this level
- [00:04:01.409]of education, culture, and diplomacy.
- [00:04:05.522](Speaking Chinese)
- [00:04:06.631](Calming Music)
- [00:04:08.710]Ne Hao to our friends in the Confucius Institute and
- [00:04:11.818]congratulations on a phenomenal ten years of impact
- [00:04:15.122]here in Nebraska.
- [00:04:16.930]It's great that they continue to provide opportunities
- [00:04:19.528]not only for teachers, but for students and for
- [00:04:21.522]members of the community.
- [00:04:23.210]It's actually a very global society now,
- [00:04:26.480]and a global economy says we need to know what is
- [00:04:29.594]happening on the other side of the world, just as
- [00:04:31.218]they're interested in what we're doing.
- [00:04:32.756]I just wish the Confucius Institute can grow bigger
- [00:04:36.018]and better and we'll have more teachers and students
- [00:04:40.066]join the program to learn about Chinese culture,
- [00:04:43.447]and also to extend our friendship worldwide.
- [00:04:47.836]We have made a lot of achievements in terms
- [00:04:51.740]of teaching,
- [00:04:53.356]in terms of
- [00:04:55.685]understanding each other.
- [00:04:57.628]I'm very very very proud of the University of Nebraska
- [00:05:00.976]Lincoln, Confucius Institute and want to
- [00:05:04.188]extend my highest admiration and congratulations
- [00:05:08.938]on their tenth anniversary.
- [00:05:11.298]I'd also like to thank the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:05:14.527]Xi'An Jiaotong University, and our partners of Hanban for
- [00:05:17.897]supporting us for all these years.
- [00:05:20.708]Certainly appreciate your support and encouragement.
- [00:05:24.276]I'm very happy to be and proud to be a part of
- [00:05:27.618]the members of the Confucius Institute and also
- [00:05:30.588]the entire Global
- [00:05:33.480]Institutes in Hanban.
- [00:05:35.973]My administration is ten years old,
- [00:05:40.024]the Confucius Institute is ten years old, we are buddies,
