- [00:00:00.589](soft upbeat music)
- [00:00:04.280]I really like that we have this program Research First.
- [00:00:07.240]You get to start working in the lab very early.
- [00:00:10.389]Your first year you do coursework,
- [00:00:12.291]but you also get into the lab
- [00:00:13.440]and start working on your own project.
- [00:00:16.221]The teachers have to work with students,
- [00:00:18.803]how to do research properly.
- [00:00:20.485]I felt absolutely more confident
- [00:00:22.382]when I started my research during fall semester.
- [00:00:27.984]There are two main projects that I'm working on.
- [00:00:31.464]The goal of one of the projects
- [00:00:32.784]is to create an environmentally safe way
- [00:00:34.763]to synthesize ethylene glycol.
- [00:00:36.544]That is one of the things that I like about research,
- [00:00:40.032]the fact that I'm not only furthering my own career,
- [00:00:43.022]but I get to help the planet.
- [00:00:45.184]My most exciting moments in research
- [00:00:47.813]is when I discover something new or unexpected.
- [00:00:50.843]When topics that seem very unrelated
- [00:00:53.123]all of a sudden have a connection.
- [00:00:55.752]Along with that, you're getting state of the art equipment,
- [00:00:59.363]and the professors that we have in our department
- [00:01:01.501]are really working at the frontiers of science.
- [00:01:07.283]I like teaching because it helps me learn.
- [00:01:10.613]In addition to that, I like to see my students
- [00:01:12.672]grow and develop their skills.
- [00:01:16.032]We have a lot of fellowships,
- [00:01:17.752]and using these fellowships you can travel around the US.
- [00:01:20.750]I went to San Francisco
- [00:01:22.304]for American Chemical Society conference.
- [00:01:25.293]I had a chance to speak in front of people.
- [00:01:27.664]I shared my experience.
- [00:01:29.293]So I think it's exciting,
- [00:01:30.453]both in terms of your development as a scientist,
- [00:01:33.871]but also for communication with new people.
- [00:01:37.512]I'm from Ethiopia, and it would
- [00:01:39.283]be very wonderful for me to go back home
- [00:01:41.703]and improve the field there,
- [00:01:44.664]because there is a lot of work to be done in the sciences.
- [00:01:47.520]I'm not sure quite what path I choose,
- [00:01:49.842]but I want my career to make a difference
- [00:01:52.523]in people's lives.
- [00:01:54.264](gentle upbeat music)
