- [00:00:29.300]with great Husker ties.
- [00:00:30.608]What kind of charge did you give Mr. Remington
- [00:00:33.094]now in his interim role?
- [00:00:34.683]Well, we're very pleased following the
- [00:00:38.918]announcement of the leadership change in our
- [00:00:41.364]athletics director position, to be to reach out
- [00:00:44.823]to somebody like Dave Remington.
- [00:00:47.106]He's a legend in his own right in Huskerdom
- [00:00:52.150]from his playing days here and South Omaha boy
- [00:00:55.577]that was arguableythe best defensive lineman in the

- [00:01:02.275]An academic an all American, a hall of fame academic
- [00:01:05.020]all American who has led very successfully for
- [00:01:10.109]well over 20 years now at the Boomer Esiason Foundation,
- [00:01:12.389]working in the cystic Fibrosis area.
- [00:01:16.183]So proven leader, somebody that knows how to run a business,
- [00:01:19.810]in this case a foundation, philanthropy business.
- [00:01:23.838]And for him to be willing to pull up from New York
- [00:01:26.647]where he lives with Lisa, his wife, and four children
- [00:01:31.613]to come an month or two with us to help us through the
- [00:01:37.278]leadership transition, bringing on a new AD it's a big deal.
- [00:01:41.357]And we're really honored to have Dave coming in and
- [00:01:44.265]serving in that role and leading
- [00:01:47.038]our athletics team during this time.
- [00:01:49.356]He will not be in Champagne, he's back in Lincoln.
- [00:01:52.005]The big volleyball match tonight
- [00:01:53.594]with a nationally ranked team.
- [00:01:54.859]They're going to retiring Jordan Larson's jersey.
- [00:01:56.733]Another one of those duties athletics directors have to
- [00:01:58.816]deal with as well, so he's going to have his hands full.
- [00:02:02.031]He's got his plate full.
- [00:02:03.296]Yeah, he's got his plate full.
- [00:02:04.356]We got the game tonight here is Champagne and looking
- [00:02:09.349]forward to that game, but volleyball's a big weekend,
- [00:02:13.834]with volleyball this weekend with Minnesota and Wisconsin.
- [00:02:17.421]So Dave was kind of joking with me earlier in the week.
- [00:02:20.718]He said I'm going to go learn a lot about
- [00:02:22.104]volleyball this weekend and start there.
- [00:02:24.750]So just really happy to have Dave here as kind of a
- [00:02:29.798]very stabilizing, calming influence
- [00:02:32.125]during a time of transition for our leadership team.
- [00:02:35.504]We've got one of the best leadership teams in athletics
- [00:02:38.319]in the country, no doubt about that.
- [00:02:41.168]But it gave us an opportunity to bring in somebody from the
- [00:02:44.058]outside to work with us kind of during the transition.
- [00:02:48.009]So great to have him here.
- [00:02:49.678]Well as chancellor of a big university,
- [00:02:52.212]you have done this before with
- [00:02:54.492]interim leadership during an ongoing search.
- [00:02:57.470]You're on the process of searching for some permanent hires
- [00:02:59.714]in some other leadership positions on campus.
- [00:03:02.161]Where are you at in the process for those searches?
- [00:03:04.320]Well we have two, two really prominent positions
- [00:03:07.604]in our university senior team,
- [00:03:10.250]Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development,
- [00:03:13.999]held by Prim Paul, who we lost a little over a year ago
- [00:03:18.569]to cancer, that position has been filled with an
- [00:03:22.604]interim leader this past year, Steve Godder.
- [00:03:26.392]Computer scientist from our facility who became
- [00:03:29.595]Associate Vice Chancellor for Research
- [00:03:33.516]a couple of years ago.
- [00:03:35.060]So Steve's been leading that group very successfully
- [00:03:37.710]this past year and now we're in a permanent search
- [00:03:41.416]for the next permanent Vice Chancellor to lead our
- [00:03:43.941]research efforts, so excited about that.
- [00:03:47.569]Also, our Student Affairs division.
- [00:03:50.455]So think of everything to do with student life, housing,
- [00:03:54.359]activities across campus, campus rec, all of those
- [00:03:57.414]kinds of things that fall up under Student Affairs.
- [00:04:00.565]Juan Franco served for about 11 years in that role.
- [00:04:05.832]Recently passed away in August this year.
- [00:04:10.152]There was a transition there.
- [00:04:12.106]Lori Bellows has stepped into that role.
- [00:04:15.387]Actually had been planned for her to step into that role
- [00:04:18.281]prior to Juan's death on July first.
- [00:04:23.418]We'll be looking next year for the
- [00:04:25.662]permanent leader at that position.
- [00:04:28.106]Kathy Ferrall, our Dean of College and Business serving in
- [00:04:31.082]the interim capacity there, we have a notional search
- [00:04:32.961]underway for that position currently.
- [00:04:37.315]We got both great interim leaders, I got Dave
- [00:04:41.673]over in athletics, we've got Steve, and we've got Lori,
- [00:04:44.860]and we've got Kathy and searches underway for
- [00:04:48.407]those permanent positions in the future.
- [00:04:51.219]I want to ask you about your State of
- [00:04:52.473]the University address which you gave a couple of weeks ago.
- [00:04:55.075]You closed your address with a sentiment about working
- [00:04:58.095]together as Nebraskans always do.
- [00:04:59.929]How has that sentiment factor into how you approach
- [00:05:03.228]your role and your hope that the university can
- [00:05:05.631]achieve during your tenure here?
- [00:05:07.826]Well you know, there's that famous line in
- [00:05:09.326]Dear Old Nebraska U we'll all sit together
- [00:05:12.426]in all kids of weather for dear old Nebraska U.
- [00:05:15.717]You know, I know that's a sentiment about
- [00:05:18.121]Nebraskans in general but we do have
- [00:05:23.887]times of transition like we're experiencing now.
- [00:05:27.090]We have, our budget we've got a little bit of a challenge
- [00:05:31.287]in our budget, I talked about that in the
- [00:05:32.875]State of the University address and we're addressing that
- [00:05:36.807]and not changing the momentum or the trajectory
- [00:05:39.980]the university is on and growing and
- [00:05:42.019]doing so many good things with that growth.
- [00:05:45.559]So it is true, we all stick together in all kids of weather
- [00:05:48.615]for dear old Nebraska U and
- [00:05:50.118]I know that's what people are doing with us as we fulfill
- [00:05:54.968]our mission and put that education in place for our students
- [00:06:00.795]in a way that is unparalleled in my mind anywhere else.
- [00:06:05.495]The research that we're doing here and the play that we
- [00:06:08.702]have on the athletics field and arena.
- [00:06:11.840]Absolutely, we'll all stick together stick together
- [00:06:13.141]in all kind of weather for dear old Nebraska U.
- [00:06:15.173]Go big red.
