[00:00:30.434]You know, we are in a sea of red here in Eugene
[00:00:33.877]and in Portland earlier, the last couple of days.
[00:00:37.207]Thousands and thousands of Husker nation
[00:00:39.700]have showed up for us to support our Huskers
[00:00:42.339]and it's a great day in Eugene.
[00:00:44.023]Fantastic, well we talk all the time
[00:00:46.073]with the football team, Ronnie,
[00:00:47.647]about the sellout streak and so proud of that
[00:00:50.351]and how much this football team is followed by our fan base.
[00:00:54.268]You follow numbers as well, enrollment numbers
[00:00:57.258]and those came in this week.
[00:00:59.244]What can you tell us?
[00:01:00.801]Well you know we have that 355 up on Memorial Stadium
[00:01:04.701]of the consecutive sellouts
[00:01:06.027]and sometimes we don't even put that in perspective.
[00:01:09.353]That started the year after I was born.
[00:01:12.920]So 55 years of consecutive sellouts
[00:01:16.068]and we got some really great numbers this week.
[00:01:19.364]We released our enrollment data
[00:01:21.088]for the current academic year for the university
[00:01:24.118]and once again we are so fortunate that we broke
[00:01:27.692]our all-time enrollment record for the
[00:01:30.380]University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
[00:01:32.263]Just over 26,000 students, 26,079 to be exact.
[00:01:38.726]Last year we were up about 640 students.
[00:01:41.269]This year we're up another couple of hundred
[00:01:43.257]beyond that previous record.
[00:01:45.142]Up in Nebraska students, up in non-resident students,
[00:01:48.618]up in graduate students, up across the board.
[00:01:51.457]Most diverse freshman class we've ever had
[00:01:54.080]and the largest freshman class in our history
[00:01:56.810]at just over 4,900 new first-time freshmen.
[00:02:00.217]That doesn't happen with the wave of a wand.
[00:02:02.189]I know you have recruiters out there constantly
[00:02:04.634]pounding the pavement to try to get students interested
[00:02:07.270]in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
[00:02:08.402]A lot of people go into get those number where they are.
[00:02:10.878]Oh, absolutely and it's a much more
[00:02:12.643]competitive environment.
[00:02:14.013]You know, higher ed is in a very competitive
[00:02:15.943]kinda transformational time.
[00:02:17.956]For us to be up this year, especially I'd say this year
[00:02:21.273]in enrollment is an indication of the quality
[00:02:23.474]of the university, of the excellence of our faculty,
[00:02:26.586]of the programs and the momentum
[00:02:28.203]that the university is experiencing.
[00:02:29.973]We've now experienced over this past decade,
[00:02:34.352]so if you go back to 2007,
[00:02:36.793]UNL's enrollment is now up 11% over what it was at that time
[00:02:40.734]and we're expecting to see that continue to trend up
[00:02:43.565]now in the years ahead of us.
[00:02:45.419]Well increased enrollment means more alumni.
[00:02:48.560]When they get done with their school time
[00:02:50.401]and we're out here in a big alumni trip this weekend,
[00:02:53.096]what are you hearing from some of the alumni?
[00:02:55.142]Well you know we were at the game event in Portland
[00:02:58.311]last night with the Nebraska alumni association.
[00:03:00.777]We're here at Husker Huddle today with a huge crowd.
[00:03:04.701]We have alumni spread all over the world,
[00:03:07.020]now over 196,000 living alumni of our university
[00:03:11.495]and a lot of Huskers everywhere, right.
[00:03:14.458]So we have 70 alumni chapters spread around the world
[00:03:18.227]and in four countries around the world
[00:03:20.789]and we have a number of those represented here.
[00:03:23.535]The Oregonians for Nebraska have done a great job
[00:03:26.597]in hosting all the Huskers here this week.
[00:03:29.635]Last night we were with them
[00:03:31.151]and they couldn't be more excited about having
[00:03:33.303]all of their friends from around Husker nation here.
[00:03:36.502]And in the surrounding states.
[00:03:37.881]We've got a lot of Californians here.
[00:03:39.280]We've got a lot of Washington folks here,
[00:03:40.953]a lot of Idaho folks, Nevada folks.
[00:03:43.482]So excited to see them and excited to hear from them
[00:03:47.556]about the successes that they've had
[00:03:49.910]and the success that our alumni around the world
[00:03:52.662]are representing in the impacts that they're making
[00:03:54.987]in their careers and in their lives.
[00:03:57.068]That's great.
[00:03:57.901]Well again, congratulations on the enrollment numbers.
[00:04:00.211]I know you can't rest on it, you have to keep
[00:04:02.871]constantly going out there
[00:04:04.015]because you don't want to ever go backwards
[00:04:05.855]and it's just a yearly thing.
[00:04:07.268]That's right.
[00:04:08.260]I was kinda reminiscing the other day with Amber Williams,
[00:04:11.605]who's our admissions director
[00:04:13.272]and has been a large person behind the scenes
[00:04:15.833]of these enrollment increases we've experienced
[00:04:17.497]and she was telling me that compared to
[00:04:21.045]say 15 years ago when most of the students
[00:04:24.344]that we coming to the university were applying
[00:04:26.387]to one or two institutions, now over 1/3 of the students
[00:04:30.172]that come to us are applying to seven or more institutions
[00:04:34.029]and looking at where they're gonna go to school.
[00:04:35.727]So really, as I said before, a competitive landscape
[00:04:38.339]and for us to continue to attract and build
[00:04:40.868]these big, very excellent classes
[00:04:43.488]is an indication that the University of Nebraska
[00:04:45.564]is in the middle of everywhere and everything,
[00:04:47.941]as I like to say, in what we're doing.
[00:04:50.118]Fantastic, well have you got food,

[00:04:56.668]and as you know, Husker Jane, my wife,
[00:04:59.147]she's got a good feeling. Good.

[00:05:09.498]and so it's game day and we're ready to go.
