- [00:00:00.000](hip hip music)
- [00:00:03.935]`(scratching)
- [00:00:09.432]So that's kind of an idea of taking a sample
- [00:00:11.512]and manipulating it and looping it to make it your own beat.
- [00:00:15.021]For our History of hip hop class,
- [00:00:16.611]we had a DJ come in and he showed us
- [00:00:18.301]how he does his job and what he does exactly.
- [00:00:21.393]And how he got started.
- [00:00:22.679]Sampling for us was the little segment that,
- [00:00:26.362]the sweet spot is what I called it.
- [00:00:27.545]I didn't know it was a sample at the time,
- [00:00:28.957]but when I sweet spotted that record,
- [00:00:30.544]was the best part of the record.
- [00:00:32.396]Today we were talking about the history of hip hop.
- [00:00:34.828]And where Djing came from and where it is today.
- [00:00:38.552]What I want the students to understand is how formational
- [00:00:42.324]or important Djing is to hip hop culture.
- [00:00:46.051]It fit perfectly in 'cause right now we're
- [00:00:47.880]in the 70s and early 80s of hip hop.
- [00:00:49.656]So, Djing is what started it so it gave us insight to that.
- [00:00:53.414](blending)
- [00:00:58.668]I think events like these are important
- [00:01:00.216]because it just leads to exposure
- [00:01:02.168]and I think that's one of the most important things
- [00:01:04.575]in getting to have that college experience and learn.
- [00:01:08.667]Things that are outside of your field
- [00:01:10.330]or outside of what you already know.
- [00:01:12.058]The collaboration with the LEAD over this really
- [00:01:14.586]already started in the spring.
- [00:01:16.038]And from then we started talking about ways in which to
- [00:01:19.932]integrate this performance into the actual curriculum.
- [00:01:22.782]And again, it's around of some of the themes and ideas
- [00:01:26.374]we're trying to get across in the class.
- [00:01:28.330](Djing)
- [00:01:33.252]It's great that the LEAD center has things like this
- [00:01:35.818]because years ago I used to go, like out of the city,
- [00:01:38.868]to go find those types of things;
- [00:01:40.702]breakdancing and DJ battles,
- [00:01:41.766]and it's great to have LEAD center here
- [00:01:43.969]because they are actually facilitating that here,
- [00:01:47.560]where you don't have to go, you know,
- [00:01:49.982]to Seattle or St. Louis to find those types of things.
- [00:01:53.288]It's great that it's right here.
- [00:01:54.712](applause and shouting)
- [00:01:58.454](laughing)
