- [00:00:00.196]Greg Sharpe welcoming you back
- [00:00:01.449]to our coverage of Husker volleyball tonight,
- [00:00:03.324]and delighted to be joined now in studio
- [00:00:04.870]by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln champs' Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.648]Here we are, match number two of the year!
- [00:00:09.332]How exciting is this to get going?
- [00:00:11.132]Well, it's sure great to see the ladies
- [00:00:12.417]back in action, you know,
- [00:00:13.677]after the great year that we had last year,
- [00:00:15.765]and now, with two big matches to kick off the year.
- [00:00:19.365]Here and this one with Florida, so
- [00:00:21.252]exciting time of year for us to get back into the season.
- [00:00:24.118]And now the program being led by a hall-of-famer.
- [00:00:26.041]How about that?
- [00:00:26.941]Well, we were so pleased here a few weeks ago
- [00:00:28.937]when we got the news that Coach Cook
- [00:00:31.531]is being named to the Coaches Hall of Fame.
- [00:00:34.267]It's a big, big deal.
- [00:00:36.795]When I found it out, I reached out to him and said,
- [00:00:39.023]"John, that just couldn't be more fitting."
- [00:00:41.357]With the kind of record he's had,
- [00:00:42.913]being the sixth-winningest coach in NCAA history.
- [00:00:47.540]Of course, he's coached three of our teams
- [00:00:49.397]to national championships,
- [00:00:51.092]and last year, just a little short,
- [00:00:53.147]of being in that same league again.
- [00:00:56.791]Named national coach of the year twice.
- [00:00:59.196]So, we're just so fortunate
- [00:01:00.781]to have that kind of leadership leading our program
- [00:01:03.399]and keeping us at the national level of prominence
- [00:01:05.564]that we enjoy.
- [00:01:06.789]I know sports is a big part of the university,
- [00:01:08.525]and sports broadcasting certainly has its niche
- [00:01:10.806]on campus, as well, and I know
- [00:01:12.258]you're wanting to expand on that here.
- [00:01:13.848]Well, you know, we've been really, really pleased
- [00:01:15.909]about the number of programs that have
- [00:01:18.828]seen growth and development on campus around athletics
- [00:01:22.358]over the last several years.
- [00:01:24.314]We have a new Master's program in athletic administration
- [00:01:27.028]in the College of Business,
- [00:01:28.811]and now, this fall,
- [00:01:30.051]we have a brand new program in Sports Media Communication
- [00:01:33.541]in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:01:36.180]Exciting development in that College.
- [00:01:38.795]It's one of our leading Colleges of Journalism
- [00:01:41.094]in the country,
- [00:01:42.305]and I know you've got a special guest with us today
- [00:01:45.115]that's kinda right in the thick of that.
- [00:01:47.961]I had a chance for him to interview me about a year ago,
- [00:01:49.981]so he already kinda knows what he's doing
- [00:01:52.506]here in this field, so
- [00:01:54.492]great to see that program kicking off.
- [00:01:56.645]Absolutely, Kyle Haviken is with us,
- [00:01:58.136]a senior from Scattered.
- [00:01:59.994]Our paths have crossed a few different times.
- [00:02:03.200]Senior year.
- [00:02:04.033]What has your experience on the campus been like?
- [00:02:06.723]Well it's been great, you know.
- [00:02:08.365]CoJMC or the College of Journalism Mass Comm
- [00:02:10.734]provides students that want to get in to the business
- [00:02:13.182]with a multitude of opportunities.
- [00:02:15.129]Between our two radio stations, our FM side
- [00:02:17.308]and our online platform, not only that,
- [00:02:20.240]but the classes that they provide.
- [00:02:22.007]Chancellor Green talked about the new major
- [00:02:24.580]that we had, but originally before the major,
- [00:02:25.992]we had classes, we had the sports class
- [00:02:28.936]that teaches you how to become basically talent on air.
- [00:02:31.692]Or we have an Anderson Sports live class in the Spring,
- [00:02:34.050]which is a sports centered type show
- [00:02:36.585]for 30 minutes on Monday's and so all of these experiences
- [00:02:39.465]are allowing us to get out foot in the door,
- [00:02:41.313]not only on the talent side, but we also
- [00:02:42.917]have classes that, through sports journalism,
- [00:02:44.836]how we focus so much on writing and being able
- [00:02:46.779]to tell stories, and then obviously,
- [00:02:49.333]there is advertising in public relations
- [00:02:51.411]because that is a lot of what sports is,
- [00:02:52.948]is the PR side.
- [00:02:54.017]You can't forget about social media
- [00:02:56.450]with the various platforms that we have,
- [00:02:58.400]so all of the opportunities we get,
- [00:03:00.165]not only through the talent side,
- [00:03:01.900]but we have the other sides that flow in.
- [00:03:04.039]Because in this business, we have learned through
- [00:03:05.601]CoJMC, they have to be a multi faceted
- [00:03:08.085]person going out in the sports industry.
- [00:03:10.359]Alright, tell me about yourself.
- [00:03:11.289]Senior year, you are gonna graduate in May,
- [00:03:12.926]what are your plans?
- [00:03:13.837]Hope is May, fingers are crossed,
- [00:03:16.015]and we will have to go from there
- [00:03:17.581]just hoping something sports radio,
- [00:03:19.691]but got to keep options open right out of college.
- [00:03:21.924]Well, I have known you for a couple of years,
- [00:03:23.868]you have got a bright future ahead of you,
- [00:03:25.335]and thank you for kind of letting inside
- [00:03:26.625]look at what is going on on campus here today.
- [00:03:29.240]Chancellor, you are always great to catch up,
- [00:03:30.073]we will see you at a football game here in about a week,
- [00:03:32.568]you ready for that?
- [00:03:33.401]Oh yeah, go Big Red.
- [00:03:34.342]Lets take you now back to Gainesville,
- [00:03:35.617]and John Banner.
