- [00:00:02.284]Hi guys, my name is Kai Vinnie.
- [00:00:04.644]I am a senior,
- [00:00:05.613]double major in advertising and journalism here at
- [00:00:07.949]the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:09.079]I've been in the Greek system in my member
- [00:00:11.821]fraternity since I was an incoming freshman.
- [00:00:13.960]I've had a lot of experience in the Greek system.
- [00:00:15.636]I'm here to talk to you today about the benefits,
- [00:00:18.874]and the great atmosphere of our Greek community.
- [00:00:23.936]I'd like to first off start by saying that the
- [00:00:26.636]Greek life here at UNL is a very multifaceted experience.
- [00:00:30.274]What I mean by that is,
- [00:00:31.624]there's a lot of different aspects to it.
- [00:00:33.127]So today I'm going to cover four key areas
- [00:00:35.958]that all kind of tie into each other.
- [00:00:37.601]Those areas are,
- [00:00:38.554]scholarship,
- [00:00:39.387]leadership and involvement,
- [00:00:40.477]brotherhood and accountability,
- [00:00:41.627]and recruitment.
- [00:00:42.732]To start with Scholarship,
- [00:00:44.181]one thing that we always like to say here in
- [00:00:46.103]the fraternity community is that we're students
- [00:00:48.208]first and fraternity men second.
- [00:00:49.849]We all share one thing in common and that's
- [00:00:52.181]we're here to get our education,
- [00:00:53.813]and that's something we take very seriously
- [00:00:55.315]as a fraternity community.
- [00:00:57.041]As evident by our fraternity GPA.
- [00:00:59.425]You can see by the numbers that we're
- [00:01:01.416]significantly higher than the all male average GPA.
- [00:01:04.958]That's something we're very proud of.
- [00:01:05.906]Different ways the fraternities can support
- [00:01:07.699]that sort of academic excellence are incentive programs.
- [00:01:11.197]That might be room picks for the highest GPA,
- [00:01:15.279]parking lot spaces behind the chapter house
- [00:01:17.668]for the highest GPAs.
- [00:01:18.929]Then there's also scholarships offered at
- [00:01:22.021]local chapter levels,
- [00:01:23.424]national chapter levels,
- [00:01:24.673]and all those sorts of things.
- [00:01:27.419]Usually fraternities have some sort of
- [00:01:29.206]weekly study hour system.
- [00:01:30.684]Usually for new members,
- [00:01:32.595]just to get them used to college,
- [00:01:34.352]and maybe the less structured atmosphere,
- [00:01:38.829]it's little bit less structured than high school,
- [00:01:41.010]so it's a good transition
- [00:01:42.605]to get used to the college dollarship.
- [00:01:45.434]Usually those are accompanied by some kind of
- [00:01:48.068]mid semester grade check.
- [00:01:49.356]The fraternity will make sure that your sons are
- [00:01:52.306]maintaining a good GPA throughout college.
- [00:01:58.326]Leadership development is the flagship principle
- [00:02:01.387]of what people think of when they think of a fraternity.
- [00:02:04.041]Here at UNL that's definitely the case.
- [00:02:06.382]What I always like to highlight is that,
- [00:02:08.468]leadership comes up in ways that
- [00:02:10.398]sometimes you might not think of.
- [00:02:12.288]A lot of intangible personal development happens
- [00:02:15.295]in the fraternity system here.
- [00:02:16.776]One example I always like to use is the election process.
- [00:02:20.368]For example, even if you lose an election,
- [00:02:23.879]or running for a position,
- [00:02:26.935]all those sorts of things will teach you the valuable life
- [00:02:29.287]lessons that you can take with you into business,
- [00:02:31.950]into relationships, and all those things.
- [00:02:35.888]Going along with that,
- [00:02:37.385]involvement goes hand in hand with leadership on campus.
- [00:02:40.401]Fraternities always encourage that their members be
- [00:02:44.172]involved in something else on campus.
- [00:02:45.835]A lot of times fraternities will even mandate
- [00:02:48.333]that to be in their organization you must be involved in
- [00:02:51.774]something else as well.
- [00:02:53.623]Last year it was estimated by student involvement that
- [00:02:56.374]the Greek population which is about 20%
- [00:02:58.831]of the population here on campus,
- [00:03:00.597]makes up 75-80 % of the leadership positions on campus.
- [00:03:05.006]As you can see,
- [00:03:06.379]being Greek really cultivates that leadership
- [00:03:09.856]here on campus with the networks and connections.
- [00:03:12.275]Some organizations that I always like to highlight,
- [00:03:14.655]there's ASUN which is student government,
- [00:03:17.189]the University Program Council,
- [00:03:19.170]which organizes and regulates all of the concerts,
- [00:03:24.290]and speakers and things on campus.
- [00:03:26.438]Then there's even clubs like the campus cat watching club,
- [00:03:28.773]which is very relaxed,
- [00:03:30.193]not very much involvement.
- [00:03:31.904]One thing I always say to guys looking to get involved
- [00:03:35.158]in the Greek system is also look at other clubs and
- [00:03:37.370]organizations that you might want to get a part of.
- [00:03:39.701]There's also University wide philanthropy
- [00:03:41.649]and service events we do.
- [00:03:43.064]The two examples I have are the big event,
- [00:03:44.878]which is, one day in the spring,
- [00:03:46.935]all the chapters here on campus go out into the
- [00:03:49.401]local Lincoln community and do service projects.
- [00:03:51.400]Then, we also have University wide philanthropy
- [00:03:53.967]such as the dance marathon.
- [00:03:55.925]Which is a national philanthropy
- [00:03:57.501]raising money for children's hospitals.
- [00:03:59.266]Last year,
- [00:04:00.561]we raised over $170,000 for the Omaha Children's Hospital.
- [00:04:04.530]This year we're looking to raise over $200,000.
- [00:04:08.421]One thing we always say,
- [00:04:09.889]is be sure to ask through your fraternity's
- [00:04:11.706]recruitment chairman about their specific philanthropy.
- [00:04:14.893]Moving on to Greek social life.
- [00:04:16.468]College is social by nature
- [00:04:18.660]and the Greek system really maximizes that experience.
- [00:04:21.934]One thing that we like to say here in Nebraska is,
- [00:04:26.246]emphasizing balance.
- [00:04:28.213]We have a high standard in multiple areas of Greek life.
- [00:04:31.084]Whether that be a high standard for academic achievement,
- [00:04:33.918]leadership achievement,
- [00:04:35.966]or even involvement on campus.
- [00:04:37.493]The sort of byproduct of that is
- [00:04:39.500]all the social benefits you get.
- [00:04:41.255]Some examples of social life that we do here
- [00:04:43.141]at Nebraska we have,
- [00:04:44.187]formal events,
- [00:04:45.193]which are typically a dance with a DJ type of thing.
- [00:04:48.612]Homecoming week is probably one of my
- [00:04:50.554]favorite weeks of the year.
- [00:04:52.091]All of the fraternities and sororities
- [00:04:53.798]team up and build floats.
- [00:04:55.088]There's a dance competition,
- [00:04:56.487]really fun time to be a Greek.
- [00:04:58.286]There's Greek league intramurals.
- [00:05:00.638]One of the best ways to get involved with other chapters.
- [00:05:03.472]There's also involvement
- [00:05:04.901]in registered student organizations.
- [00:05:06.768]One of the best ways to become social here at UNL
- [00:05:09.503]is to just get involved.
- [00:05:10.906]Whether that be in your club,
- [00:05:11.916]in your fraternity,
- [00:05:13.529]or in some other organization on campus.
- [00:05:16.814]The IFC and Panhellenic policy
- [00:05:19.223]on underage drinking is pretty straightforward.
- [00:05:20.933]It's simply,
- [00:05:21.787]first and foremost,
- [00:05:22.757]follow the law.
- [00:05:24.130]Follow the student code of conduct,
- [00:05:25.352]and follow your chapter's bylaws.
- [00:05:27.600]Basically, new members should not enter the Greek system
- [00:05:29.539]here at Nebraska with the expectation
- [00:05:31.664]that they're gonna fit the stereotype of Animal House
- [00:05:35.757]or Neighbors or maybe some of these other things
- [00:05:38.336]that you've seen in the media.
- [00:05:40.854]We just would like to bring awareness that
- [00:05:43.130]every individual makes their own decisions,
- [00:05:45.119]and every action has its own consequences.
- [00:05:47.694]It all basically comes down to one word
- [00:05:50.269]and that one word is accountability.
- [00:05:51.978]At UNL, we recognize that everyone makes mistakes
- [00:05:55.481]and I think that a fraternity
- [00:05:57.631]is one of the best places to live and learn.
- [00:06:00.200]You have a support system of guys
- [00:06:01.332]around you to pick you up if you fall down,
- [00:06:03.379]and lead you back to the success
- [00:06:05.405]that you envision for yourself.
- [00:06:08.565]A fraternity man is accountable for more than just himself.
- [00:06:11.742]Specially when he comes to campus.
- [00:06:13.223]If you have any questions about this,
- [00:06:15.104]we always encourage you to contact us here
- [00:06:17.795]at the office of fraternity life.
- [00:06:19.110]We encourage you to have an open conversation
- [00:06:22.269]with your son about these things
- [00:06:24.296]like underage drinking and stuff like that.
- [00:06:26.849]Brotherhood to us at UNL is the combination
- [00:06:29.616]of this great friendship and accountability.
- [00:06:32.486]I really thought this Martin Luther King JR quote
- [00:06:35.186]really summed it up well.
- [00:06:36.581]We must learn to live together as brothers
- [00:06:38.834]or we'll perish together as fools.
- [00:06:40.665]Here at UNL we do something called informal recruitment.
- [00:06:43.206]A lot of it takes place during the summer.
- [00:06:44.793]The way it works is,
- [00:06:46.896]your sons will go online and fill out
- [00:06:48.404]an interest form at unl.edu/greek.
- [00:06:51.083]It will have some basic information like name,
- [00:06:53.637]hometown, GPA in high school and that sort of thing.
- [00:06:56.865]From there,
- [00:06:57.787]the fraternities will reach out to your sons
- [00:06:59.668]and invite them to participate in their specific
- [00:07:01.876]chapter recruitment evens.
- [00:07:03.797]Those events can be anything like BBQ's,
- [00:07:06.139]lake events, pool parties.
- [00:07:07.631]It varies greatly between each chapter so
- [00:07:09.761]make sure whichever chapter you want to get involved with,
- [00:07:12.807]you know how they recruit and what the process is.
- [00:07:18.859]The average cost to live in a chapter house is about
- [00:07:21.165]$7500 per year.
- [00:07:23.014]But although some chapter facilities
- [00:07:24.812]are cheaper than the dorms,
- [00:07:26.377]some will also be more expensive.
- [00:07:28.346]It depends on the amount of members living in the house,
- [00:07:30.630]whether or not they have a chapter facility,
- [00:07:33.803]all sorts of things.
- [00:07:35.309]Be sure to ask about that.
- [00:07:36.604]As for the $400 housing deposit,
- [00:07:38.818]for housing,
- [00:07:39.806]many of you probably filled out an application
- [00:07:43.071]for housing and put down some money
- [00:07:44.559]so your son has somewhere to live in the fall.
- [00:07:46.314]If you decide to cancel that housing contract
- [00:07:49.635]before June 30th,
- [00:07:51.283]and your son signs and turns in a bid card before that day,
- [00:07:53.020]then you will get refunded $200 back.
- [00:07:55.938]Our next piece of advise then,
- [00:07:58.238]is to ask the fraternity of which
- [00:07:59.889]your son is signed to as a new member,
- [00:08:02.997]if they will refund the other $200.
- [00:08:06.111]A lot of times fraternities will be willing to do so.
- [00:08:08.195]It depends on each chapter so be sure to ask.
- [00:08:13.495]The bid card is a contract between IFC,
- [00:08:15.609]the member fraternity,
- [00:08:17.173]and the new member.
- [00:08:18.702]Be aware that the language on there is very specific
- [00:08:21.536]so be sure to read it.
- [00:08:22.852]Two things you musk know before signing is,
- [00:08:25.743]what does this fraternity want from me,
- [00:08:27.137]and what do I expect from the fraternity.
- [00:08:29.200]Once signed,
- [00:08:30.142]you are considered a member of that organization
- [00:08:32.084]from the University and you can drop
- [00:08:34.194]the organization but you have to wait 30 days
- [00:08:36.739]before you can sign to another fraternity.
- [00:08:40.033]We have strict no hazing policy here at Nebraska.
- [00:08:42.585]In the new member processes will vary in length,
- [00:08:45.862]depending on the chapter.
- [00:08:47.017]Anywhere from 72 hours to 16 weeks.
- [00:08:49.842]It kind of depends.
- [00:08:51.012]Some will initiate guys right after the first
- [00:08:52.836]weekend before class,
- [00:08:54.141]and some will wait until the semester GPAs
- [00:08:56.535]come back before they initiate.
- [00:08:58.204]Once again, just make sure to ask the chapter,
- [00:09:00.681]what the new member process is,
- [00:09:02.691]what is initiation and all those sorts of things.
- [00:09:05.514]The goals of the new member education are always
- [00:09:07.381]some version of ethical and personal development.
- [00:09:09.501]Education about the member organization
- [00:09:11.737]and fostering brotherhood among its members.
- [00:09:16.463]The few things that I always say about getting the most
- [00:09:18.661]out of recruitment is to talk to as many people as possible.
- [00:09:21.415]Get as many perspectives and opinions from people you trust.
- [00:09:24.857]One piece of advise I like to give is,
- [00:09:26.680]if you know students here at the University,
- [00:09:28.369]ask them about the fraternity and their reputation.
- [00:09:31.014]Ask questions about everything that may come up.
- [00:09:33.713]So whether that be about cost,
- [00:09:35.164]new member process,
- [00:09:36.929]time commitment,
- [00:09:38.322]parent involvement,
- [00:09:39.558]all sorts of things.
- [00:09:40.665]There's no such thing as a bad question in recruitment.
- [00:09:43.306]Another thing that I always like to say is,
- [00:09:45.007]be yourself and be honest.
- [00:09:46.380]Sometimes we get students coming in
- [00:09:49.555]thinking you have to be a certain type of guy
- [00:09:51.559]to be in the Greek system
- [00:09:52.759]and that is definitely not the case.
- [00:09:54.361]Every chapter is unique,
- [00:09:55.708]and there is definitely a home for everybody
- [00:09:57.608]who wants to be in the Greek system.
- [00:09:59.912]Lastly, be deliberate.
- [00:10:01.623]Don't sign yourself to a chapter
- [00:10:03.207]until you feel confident making an informed decision.
- [00:10:05.461]Make sure you know all of the necessary
- [00:10:07.979]details that you need
- [00:10:09.112]in order to make a good decision.
- [00:10:11.088]With that,
- [00:10:12.088]I hope you enjoyed this presentation.
- [00:10:14.084]I hope you find a home here at UNL and enjoy your
- [00:10:17.264]time as a student.
- [00:10:18.436]Thank you very much.
