- [00:00:01.208]Good morning everyone.
- [00:00:02.041]Hi, my name is Alfonzo Cooper Junior.
- [00:00:03.797]I'm a third year doctoral student here
- [00:00:05.789]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, go big red.
- [00:00:08.669]I currently serve as the graduate advisor
- [00:00:10.696]for the NPHC and MGC councils in the Office of Fraternity
- [00:00:14.744]and Sorority Life.
- [00:00:16.074]This presentation will outline a good bit of information
- [00:00:20.116]in regards to recruitment and necessary
- [00:00:22.818]important information for interested students
- [00:00:25.909]who wish to join the ranks in our organizations.
- [00:00:28.970]So here we go.
- [00:00:30.932]We first want to talk about the differences
- [00:00:32.610]between the two organizations.
- [00:00:34.706]So over a century in existence, the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:37.684]we proudly boast and we're very proud
- [00:00:39.661]to offer eight culturally focused Greek organizations
- [00:00:43.282]and two councils, MCG and NPHC that govern
- [00:00:46.322]the cultural focus of those Greek organizations.
- [00:00:51.001]The Multicultural Greek Council are the organizations
- [00:00:54.049]of the MGC that work to diversify
- [00:00:56.402]the skills of their members.
- [00:00:57.954]Joining an MGC chapter will further your understanding
- [00:01:00.714]of the cultures that represent in our community.
- [00:01:03.802]If you share similar interests and values,
- [00:01:06.971]consider joining one of these historical
- [00:01:10.614]Latino or Asian based organizations.
- [00:01:12.874]Now on the National Pan-Hellenic side or NPHC,
- [00:01:15.506]these councils serve as the governing and programming board
- [00:01:18.145]for the historically Black Greek-lettered organizations.
- [00:01:20.495]These organizations serve as advocate
- [00:01:22.266]for underrepresented groups in the Lincoln community
- [00:01:25.156]and emphasize scholarship, leadership,
- [00:01:27.527]service and collectivism.
- [00:01:30.574]So under the Multicultural Greek Chapters
- [00:01:33.170]we offer four.
- [00:01:34.411]We offer Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity,
- [00:01:38.491]Lambda Theta Nu Sorority,
- [00:01:40.024]Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority
- [00:01:41.944]and Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
- [00:01:45.265]On the National Pan-Hellenic side
- [00:01:47.859]the chapters on the fraternal side we offer
- [00:01:50.086]Kappa Alpha PSI, Omega Psi Phi,
- [00:01:52.875]Phi Beta Sigma.
- [00:01:54.435]On the sorority side we offer
- [00:01:56.256]Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta
- [00:01:58.622]and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
- [00:02:00.312]But in the presentation you may see
- [00:02:02.455]some of the organizations with a certain number
- [00:02:05.094]of stars next to them that's kind of outlined
- [00:02:07.733]in the little diagram in the bottom
- [00:02:10.312]as to what those differences are.
- [00:02:12.798]For Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Phi Beta Sigma
- [00:02:15.356]these are Omaha groups, but they are still
- [00:02:17.712]an opportunity for our students to join
- [00:02:20.331]these particular organizations
- [00:02:22.552]and that's through collaborative efforts
- [00:02:24.811]through the Omaha Chapter
- [00:02:26.552]and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:02:30.299]Then on the sorority side for NPHC
- [00:02:32.969]something new, something fresh
- [00:02:35.030]that is in the works, being brought to our campus,
- [00:02:38.642]there is a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
- [00:02:42.052]in the community, which is a graduate alumni chapter
- [00:02:44.527]who is trying to charter
- [00:02:48.856]a student chapter here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:02:52.751]again, with the collaborative efforts
- [00:02:54.828]with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life
- [00:02:56.879]and Alpha Kappa Alpha in Lincoln,
- [00:02:58.740]we're hoping to do that.
- [00:03:00.539]So again, if there is some information
- [00:03:02.460]or any type of information that is being given
- [00:03:05.245]and you young ladies who are out there
- [00:03:07.722]who are wanting to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
- [00:03:10.194]that is always also a choice here as well.
- [00:03:13.788]Alright guys, so how do multicultural groups differ?
- [00:03:18.407]So these organizations embrace a philosophy
- [00:03:20.825]of lifetime commitment.
- [00:03:22.873]You may hear some individuals in some other organizations
- [00:03:26.308]that say oh I once was a member
- [00:03:28.610]and I'm no longer affiliated.
- [00:03:30.740]On the MGC and NPHC side you hear members
- [00:03:34.172]whether they're an alum, where they're far removed,
- [00:03:37.520]they express that deep and that deep commitment,
- [00:03:41.052]that lifetime commitment of I am
- [00:03:43.601]and it's a very strong I am a member
- [00:03:46.712]of such and such organization.
- [00:03:50.527]Another way that these organizations differ
- [00:03:53.927]and like most organizations, the primary focus
- [00:03:56.537]is academic achievement, political awareness
- [00:03:58.991]and community service, so that can be a thing
- [00:04:01.348]that all organizations share.
- [00:04:03.748]These organizations seek to promote awareness
- [00:04:05.450]of cultural issues and heritage.
- [00:04:07.572]All organizations are open to anyone
- [00:04:09.500]and their membership consists
- [00:04:11.957]of a diverse mix of backgrounds.
- [00:04:14.012]So you necessarily don't have to be black
- [00:04:17.223]to join a NPHC organization
- [00:04:19.223]or you don't have to be Hispanic or Latino
- [00:04:21.762]or any other race to join a multicultural group.
- [00:04:24.140]There are lots of organizations here
- [00:04:26.234]and our organizations are all open-minded
- [00:04:28.999]and what fits for you.
- [00:04:30.914]What's your fit is most definitely your fit.
- [00:04:34.823]There's one thing that a lot of our organizations
- [00:04:36.503]don't encourage is students may not join
- [00:04:39.196]at the first semester.
- [00:04:40.455]As a freshman, we want our students
- [00:04:42.842]to come to the University of Nebraska
- [00:04:44.740]and get a solid foundation laid
- [00:04:47.623]as far as to the outline of the campus,
- [00:04:50.316]how things work here.
- [00:04:53.197]So they get an opportunity to learn the campus
- [00:04:57.218]and to learn the dynamics of each chapter
- [00:04:59.387]and to learn the dynamics of the campus
- [00:05:00.996]and then once the student grows
- [00:05:05.436]and matures a little more,
- [00:05:06.431]then we encourage students to seek out joining chapters.
- [00:05:12.351]Chapters of our multicultural groups here
- [00:05:14.663]tend to be a little smaller than traditional
- [00:05:17.420]Panhellenic and IFC fraternities and sororities
- [00:05:19.759]and then also chapters here do not have living units.
- [00:05:22.791]Meaning they do not have the large fraternity
- [00:05:25.572]and sorority houses that you may see on campus.
- [00:05:29.277]So let's talk about a little bit
- [00:05:30.500]of the requirements to join.
- [00:05:32.869]You must be enrolled at all times during your
- [00:05:36.470]coming into the organizations.
- [00:05:37.652]You must be enrolled as a full time student.
- [00:05:41.259]In coming to the organization for some organizations,
- [00:05:44.234]you must have completed at least 12 college credit hours,
- [00:05:47.415]however, sophomore standing is highly recommended
- [00:05:51.289]for perspective applicants.
- [00:05:55.116]The university minimum GPA to join any of our organizations,
- [00:05:59.276]again, the minimum GPA is a 2.5 cumulative
- [00:06:02.755]grade point average.
- [00:06:03.647]Again, that's cumulative.
- [00:06:06.250]And then some organizations require
- [00:06:09.844]formal letters of recommendation.
- [00:06:11.804]Again, some of them require, some of them do not.
- [00:06:15.893]And also any other requirements that you must meet
- [00:06:19.122]and the approved guidelines that are set forth
- [00:06:20.974]by the chapter and/or that membership intake committee.
- [00:06:25.716]So let's talk about some exploring options.
- [00:06:28.117]So let's say for instance
- [00:06:28.958]you come to the University of Nebraska
- [00:06:30.505]and you're scrolling through the Greek website
- [00:06:33.406]which is www.unl.edu/greek
- [00:06:38.689]and you're just wondering,
- [00:06:40.713]there's so many organizations, there's so many things
- [00:06:44.558]or I'm interested in an NPHC or MGC organization,
- [00:06:47.601]I just don't know which one.
- [00:06:48.804]So here are some things to consider.
- [00:06:51.758]First and foremost, we do a lot of education in our office
- [00:06:55.190]and through our office and through our department
- [00:06:57.445]about educating our students about hazing.
- [00:07:02.169]That is one of the big, big things
- [00:07:04.161]that we want to protect our students
- [00:07:07.401]and want to know that our students
- [00:07:08.484]that they are safe here in our Greek system
- [00:07:11.382]and they too can have a great and positive experience
- [00:07:15.685]as it pertains to joining Greek letter chapters.
- [00:07:18.404]So we require our students to attend
- [00:07:22.222]an anti-hazing certification kind of seminar
- [00:07:25.104]called Huskers Against Hazing, and again,
- [00:07:27.445]that certification is acquired through our office,
- [00:07:29.378]the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:07:31.658]Another thing is that we really encourage our students
- [00:07:34.789]to truly research those organizations
- [00:07:37.121]that they want to join and learn as much as possible.
- [00:07:39.892]Go to their websites.
- [00:07:41.463]All of their websites are public information
- [00:07:43.463]that you can just easily Google.
- [00:07:46.711]Or if not, you can even call our office
- [00:07:48.225]and we can get you in contact with those organizations.
- [00:07:50.820]They'll even provide you with some of the information
- [00:07:52.423]that we have in our office
- [00:07:54.145]based off of those Greek organizations.
- [00:07:55.793]Another thing for exploring, attend chapter programs
- [00:07:58.311]and events.
- [00:07:59.535]Again, the chapter is lot of the MGC and NPHC organizations
- [00:08:02.457]are always looking to invite people to their programming,
- [00:08:05.705]interested members and just educate people
- [00:08:08.105]about their organization and what they specifically do
- [00:08:12.757]and what makes them special.
- [00:08:15.574]Show your commitment to Greek values
- [00:08:17.135]by becoming involved on campus and communities.
- [00:08:19.287]Again, our Greek letter organizations,
- [00:08:22.887]most of them are just not Greek members,
- [00:08:24.608]they're involved in so many other things.
- [00:08:26.708]So another thing that could possibly
- [00:08:30.843]boost your chances of joining
- [00:08:32.228]is showing those organizations that you too are involved
- [00:08:34.896]and are committed to value based things on campus
- [00:08:38.826]and as well attend as many events as possible
- [00:08:42.058]hosted by the multicultural group communities.
- [00:08:45.938]Let's talk about intake.
- [00:08:48.703]Intake is the manner in which chapters bring in new members.
- [00:08:54.445]Let's talk about a little bit of those expectations
- [00:08:56.461]or things that you can expect about intake.
- [00:08:59.308]Again, intake is the process by which chapters
- [00:09:01.198]take in or bring in new members.
- [00:09:03.928]The intake process generally includes a pre-induction
- [00:09:07.458]or orientation period, an in-depth member education
- [00:09:10.509]which it talks about the history of the organization
- [00:09:13.058]and all the traditional things,
- [00:09:14.522]and then the final induction period.
- [00:09:17.226]The membership process takes place
- [00:09:18.957]before someone is initiated.
- [00:09:21.170]New members are introduced to the Greek community
- [00:09:23.274]in the form of a new member presentation.
- [00:09:25.405]You may hear the word or the terminology
- [00:09:26.852]as a come out show or a probate show.
- [00:09:30.477]Alright guys, some questions to ask
- [00:09:33.173]when you're researching and when looking
- [00:09:35.561]to join an MGC or NPHC organization,
- [00:09:39.917]some things to ask those members when talking to them
- [00:09:43.368]or seeking information, what is your grade point average.
- [00:09:46.427]We spoke earlier a few slides ago
- [00:09:49.106]that organizations are looking
- [00:09:52.994]or the minimum GPA yes is a 2.5,
- [00:09:55.717]but there are some organizations out there
- [00:09:57.208]who are looking for the best and brightest
- [00:09:58.826]as it pertains to academics.
- [00:10:00.858]So we wanna make sure that we're in order,
- [00:10:02.533]that we're in line with the expectations
- [00:10:04.133]of those particular chapters.
- [00:10:06.843]What community service?
- [00:10:07.890]Another question to ask is what community service projects
- [00:10:11.934]are your chapter involved with?
- [00:10:13.279]What are you doing in Lincoln?
- [00:10:14.658]What are you doing in Omaha?
- [00:10:15.527]What are you doing in the greater community,
- [00:10:17.128]the greater sense of Nebraska?
- [00:10:20.058]Another question to ask, what other organizations
- [00:10:22.549]are your members involved in?
- [00:10:24.186]Again, we said earlier that a lot of our students
- [00:10:27.273]are not just only active in their fraternity
- [00:10:30.165]or their sorority, but they're active in other RSOs,
- [00:10:33.893]Registered Student Organizations.
- [00:10:35.573]There are so many on our campus
- [00:10:37.457]and our Greek students do such a great job
- [00:10:39.544]of just balancing all that they do with those organizations.
- [00:10:43.144]So again, you know, you want to know
- [00:10:45.862]as much information as possible going in from the start.
- [00:10:49.146]What is the time commitment during
- [00:10:50.541]the membership intake process?
- [00:10:52.062]It's very important to know will this keep me up at night?
- [00:10:56.144]Will this keep me from my studies?
- [00:10:57.856]Will this interfere with anything with me with my grades?
- [00:11:01.146]And I think that's really important to ask
- [00:11:03.058]and to know going in.
- [00:11:04.818]And also, what type of commitment is involved
- [00:11:07.900]for me being a member?
- [00:11:10.478]What does it mean to be a member of this organization
- [00:11:12.624]as it pertains to my commitment?
- [00:11:14.752]Those are very important questions.
- [00:11:16.523]So we'll move forward with a little bit
- [00:11:18.508]of financial information.
- [00:11:20.843]Each member, each council or each organization
- [00:11:23.925]offers a different barrier or different range
- [00:11:27.091]of prices as it pertains to what
- [00:11:29.873]those financial obligations are.
- [00:11:31.843]So as you can see, for MGC fraternity financial information
- [00:11:35.493]on this particular slide, you can see those numbers.
- [00:11:39.930]Give you a second.
- [00:11:43.168]And so yeah, as you can see,
- [00:11:44.308]it's not really that expensive.
- [00:11:48.018]It's really, really feasible.
- [00:11:50.988]At least I would think.
- [00:11:53.904]Very feasible here.
- [00:11:55.082]So the same thing for multicultural Greek
- [00:11:58.274]council sorority financial information.
- [00:11:59.970]So you can look on the slide
- [00:12:01.160]and you can see those numbers there
- [00:12:02.920]that these particular numbers
- [00:12:04.352]are very, very, very reasonable.
- [00:12:08.251]It's not really hurting your pocket.
- [00:12:09.470]You can see maybe one of the couple of numbers
- [00:12:12.645]are like 500 plus dollars, but in the grand sense of things,
- [00:12:17.730]this is very inexpensive as it pertains
- [00:12:19.858]to joining a chapter and joining a fraternity,
- [00:12:23.988]especially here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:12:27.482]Now on the NPHC side
- [00:12:32.101]as fraternities, you know, members of NPHC fraternities
- [00:12:36.334]they're charged as it pertains to their membership dues
- [00:12:39.018]and fees based on kind of where they are in college.
- [00:12:43.330]So depending if it will cost you a little less
- [00:12:48.156]at the junior and senior level,
- [00:12:49.751]but it will cost you a lot more at the second semester
- [00:12:54.175]of freshman and sophomore type area.
- [00:12:57.378]Also there's a tidbit in here about alumni membership
- [00:13:00.162]and NPHC, again, it's all based on by paying
- [00:13:04.972]it's a one-time fee.
- [00:13:06.364]It's nothing that's recurring.
- [00:13:08.065]It's a one-time fee that you tend to see.
- [00:13:12.505]Then as well, the NPHC sorority
- [00:13:16.516]financial obligation information here.
- [00:13:18.790]As you can see, that figure on the bottom, again,
- [00:13:21.060]it's a range and, again, it's in some form
- [00:13:25.442]of a pocket.
- [00:13:27.559]Again, if you think about it in the grand sense of things,
- [00:13:32.742]it is very reasonable.
- [00:13:34.085]Again, for alumni or individuals who even come here to join
- [00:13:38.520]who are grad students and there is an opportunity
- [00:13:40.224]to join alumni chapters here in Lincoln
- [00:13:42.867]here at the University of Nebraska in this community,
- [00:13:45.854]again, it's that one-time fee.
- [00:13:47.148]It's nothing that's recurring.
- [00:13:49.912]So a couple of things, a couple of steps
- [00:13:51.939]for you incoming students who are coming
- [00:13:53.709]to our campus this year,
- [00:13:57.145]on August 20, which is the welcome street fair festival
- [00:14:02.804]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:14:04.392]It's August 20, which is the day before classes start.
- [00:14:08.861]A big red welcome.
- [00:14:09.971]It's on the east plaza.
