For most people seeing a total solar eclipse is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it can be dangerous for your eyes. University of Nebraska Physics graduate students, Karl Ahrendsen and Andrew Vikartofsky describe how to watch an eclipse safely.

[00:00:03.005]What can you expect to see as you observe an eclipse?
[00:00:05.906]First, a safety tip.
[00:00:07.185]Protective eyewear must always be used
[00:00:08.978]to look directly as the Sun.
[00:00:10.771]One of the first phenomena you will
[00:00:11.961]notice is called Bailey's Beads.
[00:00:14.690]What you're seeing is the light shining through
[00:00:16.610]the bumpy surface of the Moon's craters.
[00:00:18.973]These beads disappear, leaving a single glowing dot.
[00:00:22.291]This shining dot, along with the bright circle
[00:00:24.603]around the outside of the Moon, resembles a diamond ring.
[00:00:27.638]That's why the bright spot has been named a diamond.
[00:00:30.410]When the diamond disappears,
[00:00:31.718]the eclipse has reached totality.
[00:00:33.638]You'll also note totality has arrived
[00:00:35.820]because it will become dark as night.
[00:00:37.833]Now, it's safe to look at the Sun without glasses.

[00:00:43.351]to safely view the eclipse without your glasses.

[00:00:52.405]back on to avoid damage to your eyes.
