- [00:00:02.248]A hot summer day is reflected in comments
- [00:00:05.210]on Twitter, both good and bad.
- [00:00:08.963]The green means the positive correlation
- [00:00:12.506]that the people on the ground may feel good
- [00:00:16.150]about this weather.
- [00:00:18.275]Network visualization is the process
- [00:00:20.668]of making sense of computer data.
- [00:00:23.250]In this case, tweets collected at a specific
- [00:00:26.066]point in time.
- [00:00:27.974]We use it to visualize the correlation between
- [00:00:31.492]the human sentiment and the weather pattern.
- [00:00:35.433]Nebraska computer scientist Hongfeng Yu
- [00:00:38.080]is developing tools that help scientists visualize
- [00:00:41.697]the enormous amount of data collected by supercomputers.
- [00:00:45.557]The growing amount of data makes it difficult
- [00:00:47.953]for current techniques to keep up.
- [00:00:50.474]My research aims to develop a scalable techniques
- [00:00:54.318]to efficiently and effectively visualize such large graph.
- [00:00:59.646]Yu's research is supported
- [00:01:01.137]by a National Science Foundation career award.
- [00:01:04.549]Applications for his research have potential
- [00:01:07.213]across a variety of areas, from tracking disease,
- [00:01:10.974]or climate change migration, to analyzing opinions
- [00:01:14.626]among Facebook users, or predicting the popularity
- [00:01:18.250]of an upcoming event.
- [00:01:20.216]We can explore a lot of unknown regions and also develop
- [00:01:24.219]some interesting tools that can realize some capabilities
- [00:01:29.060]which cannot realized using any existing techniques.
- [00:01:34.479]And with the collaborations we can push forward the research
- [00:01:38.180]in both computer science and engineering domains
- [00:01:41.185]and other scientific domains.
- [00:01:43.587]Yu and his team use
- [00:01:44.830]Nebraska's Holland Computing Center
- [00:01:47.339]and National Science Foundation facilities.
- [00:01:50.283]His work inspires and educates students,
- [00:01:53.343]and creates tools for the future.
- [00:01:56.622]The purpose to technique is transformative,
- [00:02:00.200]in that we can develop new technologies to push forward
- [00:02:03.486]the network visualization,
- [00:02:04.801]particularly for the very large scale.
- [00:02:06.924]Networks and graph.
