Please take a moment to hear Ernie's perspective on leadership as well as the 30-year story of the Kimmel Foundation. [00:00:14.035]being of pioneer stock,

[00:00:18.227]die-hard in the wool Nebraskan.

[00:00:22.587]In my career as a stockbroker,
[00:00:24.648]one day a man walked in to the office.
[00:00:27.786]His name was Richard Kimmel.
[00:00:30.147]From that beginning, and that meeting,
[00:00:33.056]at his funeral, they called me the son he never had.
[00:00:36.867]They created the Kimmel Foundation,
[00:00:39.442]and left me to manage that Foundation,
[00:00:42.634]which I have been doing now for about 30 years.
[00:00:48.404]In working for the Kimmels, during their lifetimes
[00:00:51.982]they were very interested
[00:00:53.613]in supporting causes that help young people.
[00:00:56.714]Anything we can do to help young people
[00:00:59.274]in their education, agriculture, and the arts
[00:01:03.055]is what our primary mission is.
[00:01:07.063]About five years ago, we created the
[00:01:10.124]Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard Educational Foundation
[00:01:13.993]and we have a partnership with the University of Nebraska.
[00:01:19.694]I do think going on through Rural Futures,
[00:01:23.284]is trying to take communities where
[00:01:26.263]there is an element of interest within the community
[00:01:30.524]to see their community start to grow and thrive.
[00:01:36.311]And who's gonna help
[00:01:38.023]these communities, and the leaders within these communities,
[00:01:42.244]and the motivated people, if it isn't
[00:01:45.123]the University of Nebraska, through Rural Futures?
[00:01:50.924]Mr. Kimmel had started, in 1926, the Kimmel Orchard.
[00:01:56.923]He had left instructions with me
[00:01:58.924]not to let anything happen to the orchard.
[00:02:03.135]He had started it from the ground floor.
[00:02:06.975]As of today, the orchard's been there for 91 years
[00:02:10.594]and it's his pride and joy.
[00:02:13.324]Was his pride and joy, is my pride and joy as well.
[00:02:19.066]Whether it's a department or interns, the orchard's
[00:02:22.482]pretty much been developed by those and we still,
[00:02:25.775]every summer, have interns that work at the orchard.
