- [00:00:09.506]that I want for the course.
- [00:00:12.290]There are equivalents that you can find for PC.
- [00:00:17.990]I use Final Cut, Final Cut is high end.
- [00:00:22.650]It's what they use for green screen things, you know,
- [00:00:28.788]if you look at Star Wars one, two and three,
- [00:00:31.762]those things are done, not largely,
- [00:00:35.359]but in some way, shape or form in Final Cut.
- [00:00:38.659]All right, so it's that level of
- [00:00:42.232]video editing, it's, if you know what you're doing,
- [00:00:46.101]in that program, you can do remarkable things.
- [00:00:48.759]I'm not at that level yet, working on it.
- [00:00:52.206]When I need down and dirty, I just need a video clip
- [00:00:56.060]quickly, it's not a lot of fade in, fade out,
- [00:01:00.890]it's not, I just need that clip, sometimes I'll use iMovie.
- [00:01:04.512]It's a little quicker, the learning curve
- [00:01:06.846]is not nearly as steep as Final Cut.
- [00:01:10.573]So those are my two video editing tools.
- [00:01:13.800]And again, there are plenty of equivalents
- [00:01:18.316]on the PC side of things.
- [00:01:20.046]iTunes works beautifully with Apple Keynote.
- [00:01:24.781]I believe it also, and I've done a little bit
- [00:01:27.152]with Powerpoint, but I believe
- [00:01:29.276]it will interact with Powerpoint, as well.
- [00:01:31.077]Not nearly as well as it does with Apple's keynote,
- [00:01:35.746]but it still will work with that.
- [00:01:38.625]Logic is where I do my music editing, and again,
- [00:01:42.890]it's Apple only, but it really helps if I only want
- [00:01:47.708]a small clip, and I want to make it sound good.
- [00:01:51.272]You can go into any clip and say,
- [00:01:53.153]start it here, end it here,
- [00:01:54.997]but what you're going to get is
- [00:01:56.038]a square start, and a square end.
- [00:01:59.370]Which is fine if you're producing a ringtone,
- [00:02:02.052]but if it's something that's, you know,
- [00:02:03.863]I'll show you some of the presentations that I use.
- [00:02:06.046]If you're using it, you know, for a classroom presentation,
- [00:02:10.423]you want to have a fade in fade out on the thing.
- [00:02:13.416]So Logic allows me to do that.
- [00:02:16.936]Not, I can't do it with iTunes.
- [00:02:18.944]And then Audacity is
- [00:02:22.845]a tool that I use if I want to bring something in,
- [00:02:26.537]say a live performance that I've recorded,
- [00:02:29.591]someone else has recorded, that's in any media format.
- [00:02:33.956]And it can come, it can be a Windows file,
- [00:02:36.255]a WAV file, whatever, but I can import that into Audacity,
- [00:02:40.330]which is free, by the way, it's cross platform.
- [00:02:43.637]And you can go in and do, again, very fast editing.
- [00:02:47.549]And for me, I use Audacity, and then,
- [00:02:52.520]export it out to iTunes to finish the job.
- [00:02:56.027]But I put in the fades, and things like that, in Audacity,
- [00:02:59.347]then I put it back into iTunes, and change the file format.
- [00:03:03.245]So, those are the programs that I use.
- [00:03:08.091]Now when I started doing this online,
- [00:03:11.481]there was a great deal of hit and miss. (chuckles)
- [00:03:15.718]And one of the things that I learned the hard way,
- [00:03:19.178]because I did it at least 10 lectures before I,
- [00:03:23.080]I really figured this out, I got on a roll,
- [00:03:25.947]and just did 10 lectures, in my office.
- [00:03:29.407]Well, my office is right next to
- [00:03:31.601]the trumpet professor's office.
- [00:03:33.703]And it, I don't know why it didn't occur to me,
- [00:03:36.594]but it should have.
- [00:03:39.113]Everything that was happening over there
- [00:03:40.768]was bleeding through into my microphone.
- [00:03:44.094]And so, they're getting my lecture, and my presentation,
- [00:03:48.262]while they're hearing trumpet etudes
- [00:03:50.153]from the office next door, it's not ideal.
- [00:03:52.803]And so all 10 of those lectures, gone,
- [00:03:56.122]and I have to do them again.
- [00:03:59.521]I'll ask you, have you guys ever had to take,
- [00:04:03.143]and I'll say this, I've had to do it three times,
- [00:04:05.651]take a STOP course through the DMV?
- [00:04:08.338]Yeah, all right, so when you take,
- [00:04:10.160]oh cool, I'm not the only one, I got to tell my wife this.
- [00:04:12.668]Yeah, all right, all right.
- [00:04:15.142]So when you take that STOP course, if you take it online,
- [00:04:18.741]you know, you can go virtually slide by slide.
- [00:04:23.640]Have you done the online one?
- [00:04:25.161]Oh, the online one is fabulous, so,
- [00:04:27.680]I actually had Brian Wilson look at this,
- [00:04:31.059]the DMV site, and he said "Oh yeah, we can do that."
- [00:04:34.321]Because your other option is, all right.
- [00:04:38.385]My Dylan lecture is over an hour,
- [00:04:41.854]and I have to pretty much get a front to back lecture.
- [00:04:47.660]And when I listen back to it, if I make a mistake,
- [00:04:50.690]or if I get ums, or,
- [00:04:52.733]I don't like any of that sort of thing.
- [00:04:55.136]I have to go back and do it again,
- [00:04:57.086]work off of, I don't work off scripts,
- [00:04:59.339]but I have to work off of bullet point,
- [00:05:02.587]things to keep me on task.
- [00:05:05.164]Well, when I saw this DMV thing, I went to Brian,
- [00:05:07.811]and I said, "Could I do my class this way?"
- [00:05:10.109]He said, "Oh yeah, we could set it up that way.
- [00:05:12.025]And so the next iteration that I'm going to do this summer
- [00:05:14.832]is going to be set up so I don't have
- [00:05:17.294]to do a straight through performance.
- [00:05:18.861]And that's really what the lecture has turned into,
- [00:05:21.136]if you have to go front to back, it's a performance.
- [00:05:25.339]And if it's an hour long lecture,
- [00:05:27.754]and it's something that you're going to save
- [00:05:30.970]and present to the students semester and semester out,
- [00:05:34.105]you want it to be something that doesn't annoy them,
- [00:05:37.739]and certainly not something that annoys you,
- [00:05:39.840]because you have to go and listen to your own voice.
- [00:05:42.743]I don't know if you're ever spent a whole summer
- [00:05:44.426]listening to your own voice, it's excruciating.
- [00:05:47.967]So you want to, you want it to be
- [00:05:50.127]as close to correct as you can make it.
- [00:05:53.006]So what I discovered was, I needed to find
- [00:05:56.779]a sound-proof environment to do this.
- [00:06:00.796]Because all of the production in the world on this
- [00:06:04.069]audio and video does me no good if I,
- [00:06:06.672]if they can hear outside noises.
- [00:06:08.663]Whether it be my trumpet colleague next door,
- [00:06:11.531]or a firetruck, or my kids, whatever.
- [00:06:15.409]I couldn't have any of those things.
- [00:06:17.673]And I'm lucky because I'm a trombonist,
- [00:06:21.295]and you'll rarely hear those two things coupled.
- [00:06:23.792]But I am a trombonist, and so my instrument
- [00:06:26.183]is loud enough that my wife and I invested
- [00:06:29.794]in a sound-proof practice room for our basement.
- [00:06:33.521]Saved a whole bunch of things, my marriage,
- [00:06:36.710]my neighbors storming the house, my kids,
- [00:06:40.168]you know, all, it saved a whole bunch of things.
- [00:06:43.049]So I've got the sound-proof room in the basement,
- [00:06:45.755]and I go down there, and that's where I do my recording.
- [00:06:50.271]I have a mic set up, it's just, it's perfect.

- [00:06:58.239]There's one in the library.
- [00:06:59.502]Yeah, there's a sound-proof room there,

- [00:07:11.396]And you know, if you just get in there, sit down,
- [00:07:13.915]put the laptop in front of you, I would,
- [00:07:15.959]you can do it through the built-in mic.
- [00:07:17.979]I would recommend getting a cheap USB mic
- [00:07:20.382]that you can clip on here, you'll get
- [00:07:22.089]a little better sound quality.
- [00:07:23.970]You know, as long as it's,
- [00:07:26.210]because it's not affecting the quality of the music
- [00:07:28.231]the students hear in the presentation, it's only your voice.
- [00:07:32.549]So as long as it's podcast quality
- [00:07:35.266]with your voice, you're fine.
- [00:07:37.518]Now, go ahead.

- [00:07:58.520]The resources I'm using are
- [00:08:02.363]personnel within the Hixson-Lied College.
- [00:08:05.238]Michael Reinmiller, in particular.
- [00:08:07.876]He was the first one who said, you know,
- [00:08:09.349]I told him what I was doing and he said to me, "Oh, geez."
- [00:08:13.447]He mentioned the DMV, I said, "Yeah,
- [00:08:14.922]"I'm pretty well versed in that."
- [00:08:17.929]And he said, "Well, we can do that."
- [00:08:19.972]and so he's going to, he's going to coach me through that.
- [00:08:24.686]But that is going to require me to hone my chops
- [00:08:28.470]a little bit more in Final Cut,
- [00:08:30.978]because we're going to do some of it
- [00:08:32.453]in the Final Cut program.

- [00:08:43.553]Actually, my college makes it available
- [00:08:45.819]as for faculty, you know, we have a site license for it.
- [00:08:49.024]So it's just a download.
- [00:08:51.171]You're right, it's incredibly pricey.
- [00:08:53.296]I think it's around 700? 750.
- [00:08:55.547]Yeah.

- [00:09:17.062]And that's the other thing, you know.
- [00:09:18.142]If you have graduate students who are at all versed in this,
- [00:09:23.587]and often times you'll get them, you know,
- [00:09:25.769]you could advertise over at the journalism college.
- [00:09:30.495]You might find students there who know how to use Final Cut,
- [00:09:34.303]or, in film and new media, you'll find students there,
- [00:09:39.632]graduate students who can help you with this.
- [00:09:41.719]But in our college, I'm lucky we have Michael.
- [00:09:45.831]But also, distance ed has been terrific
- [00:09:50.011]in helping me with this.
- [00:09:53.018]In fact, there's no way I could have done this initially
- [00:09:55.722]without the help of distance education.
- [00:09:58.242]They were the ones who initially helped me
- [00:10:00.934]with doing this course on line on Blackboard,
- [00:10:05.241]and then translating all of that to Canvas,
- [00:10:09.783]where it just, it's a night and day change, it's remarkable.
- [00:10:14.891]So what I do is get into the sound-proof booth.
- [00:10:18.574]The other thing that you have to be sure of is that
- [00:10:21.869]you are using headphones when you do these lectures.
- [00:10:26.838]Because, again, the sound bleed.
- [00:10:29.389]Say I'm recording in my sound-proof room,
- [00:10:32.921]and all is well and good, this sound that comes
- [00:10:35.406]out of the speaker, or my speaker in my room downstairs
- [00:10:39.307]will bleed back into the mic,
- [00:10:40.990]and what students will hear then is an echo.
- [00:10:46.075]And it's a little disconcerting,
- [00:10:48.595]and especially if it goes on for an hour. (laughs)
- [00:10:51.497]So you need to wear headphones.
- [00:10:53.599]You'll hear everything, but it won't go
- [00:10:55.002]back into your microphone, the only thing
- [00:10:56.652]that's going to go into your mic is your voice.
- [00:11:00.484]So just trial and error things.
- [00:11:03.630]For a bit there, I couldn't figure out
- [00:11:05.151]why I was getting that echo, but then,
- [00:11:08.494]I thought it through and, oh yeah.
- [00:11:11.188]I've got two sound sources going into the mic.
- [00:11:13.858]So the headphones solved that immediately.
- [00:11:16.482]But the, I, I can't emphasize enough
- [00:11:18.584]how important it is to get somewhere that's sound isolated,
- [00:11:22.949]and how difficult it is to find those places.
- [00:11:27.210]We had, we used to have one room in the School of Music,
- [00:11:30.670]in the Music Library, that was sound-proof room, it's gone.
- [00:11:34.675]And those rooms are pretty pricey.
- [00:11:36.800]My personal sound-proof practice room was about eight grand,
- [00:11:42.407]and that was about 15 years ago.
- [00:11:44.694]Now they're anywhere from 12 to $15,000
- [00:11:48.967]to set up a room of your own.
- [00:11:51.428]For me it made sense, it was a great tax write-off,
- [00:11:53.564]and I really needed it.
- [00:11:55.550]But for most people, it doesn't make sense,
- [00:11:58.684]and if there's a place on campus you can do it, you should.
- [00:12:01.912]And you'll also probably have access
- [00:12:04.942]to the programs that you need.
- [00:12:07.369]So these are the tools to get me where I want to go.
- [00:12:13.429]And,
- [00:12:15.240]the other issue that I have with Blackboard was
- [00:12:20.929]I could set everything up on Blackboard,
- [00:12:24.876]but because Blackboard didn't have any way
- [00:12:29.079]to prevent the file from being downloaded,
- [00:12:32.957]everything had to be set up using TechSmith Relay.
- [00:12:35.743]And TechSmith Relay is wonderful
- [00:12:37.508]for what it does, it's screen capture.
- [00:12:39.935]But in the presentations that I was putting together,
- [00:12:43.638]there was degradation of the video and the audio
- [00:12:48.213]because of TechSmith Relay.
- [00:12:50.719]Now I don't need to use it, in fact,
- [00:12:52.380]I had to download it here just a moment ago,
- [00:12:54.621]and we're recording right now using it,
- [00:12:57.059]but I don't even have it on my computer, generally.
- [00:12:59.486]Because I can upload directly to Box, and I'll show you.
- [00:13:03.828]Box works seamlessly with Canvas.
- [00:13:10.094]And so here's my Box account.
- [00:13:19.080]All right so, the rock history course is here.
- [00:13:23.515]And you see the size of files we have.
- [00:13:28.357]Some of them are actually quite large, my Dylan lecture,
- [00:13:32.412]every year in my evals I, the students,
- [00:13:36.413]observe that I like Dylan,
- [00:13:39.153]and you can see that from the file size.
- [00:13:41.403]But these, you know, Box gives you unlimited storage,
- [00:13:46.096]and once it's there, if I want to use it again,
- [00:13:49.335]it's not a matter of moving files.
- [00:13:51.250]It's a matter of moving links.
- [00:13:53.584]And it's, I'll show you how that works.
- [00:13:55.359]It's really just beautiful with Canvas, the way this works.
- [00:14:00.643]So you can see, I've loaded all these files.
- [00:14:02.895]Now I mentioned that in Blackboard, I had to use Techsmith.
- [00:14:07.551]The reason for that, if I just put a Quicktime file up,
- [00:14:10.593]which these all are, they're MP4 or M4Vs,
- [00:14:14.134]if I just put that up on Blackboard,
- [00:14:16.223]the students can just, you know, depending on
- [00:14:20.031]what machine you're using, either option-click
- [00:14:22.818]or whatever, and it'll download for them.
- [00:14:26.590]And I'm working in an environment
- [00:14:28.309]where everything that I'm using,
- [00:14:31.140]I have to be so careful about understanding fair use,
- [00:14:36.549]because I don't want to get sued by Paul McCartney.
- [00:14:39.591]He's going to win, (laughs) every time.
- [00:14:42.818]He has a lot more lawyers than even the University has.
- [00:14:45.559]So I don't want that material to get out,
- [00:14:49.517]and I have it all behind this firewall.
- [00:14:51.271]Everything, I've checked it out,
- [00:14:52.919]I'm working within the guidelines of fair use.
- [00:14:57.528]So what I can do with this is set it up,
- [00:15:01.940]and if you go here,
- [00:15:05.203]these are the links that transfer across.
- [00:15:08.953]But if you go into this particular setting,
- [00:15:11.002]into the advanced settings,
- [00:15:14.891]the default has this box clicked.
- [00:15:19.267]All I have to do is unclick that,
- [00:15:22.460]and now users don't have, the students don't have
- [00:15:26.269]the option of downloading these things.
- [00:15:30.296]That was not an option on Blackboard.
- [00:15:32.898]I mean, if that was the only upgrade,
- [00:15:34.640]I still would have made the move to Canvas.
- [00:15:36.997]But it wasn't, there were so many other things.
- [00:15:40.306]But this is a big one for me, I am not interested
- [00:15:44.044]in having litigation brought against me.
- [00:15:47.074]That takes care of all the problems
- [00:15:47.907]of people getting (unclear) downloads, and,
- [00:15:50.973]Yes, yes, it,
- [00:15:53.436]the fact that it's behind a firewall,
- [00:15:55.642]and there's, it's view only, no sweat.
- [00:15:59.983]And I'm in good shape.
- [00:16:01.796]And even to the point, with some of these,
- [00:16:04.930]where I'm showing documentaries, all right, and,
- [00:16:10.410]I'll show you what students see.
- [00:16:13.324]Actually, I'll show them to you in Canvas.
- [00:16:15.737]These are all stored, now, in Box, all right.
- [00:16:18.398]So I've got my entire course loaded here,
- [00:16:21.962]two pages worth of files, it's all ready to go.
- [00:16:27.303]And if I want to update something, the course intro,
- [00:16:30.577]I always, I update it every semester, fine.
- [00:16:33.433]I delete it from here, and upload the new one when I finish.
- [00:16:38.739]And Box is, again, it's integral to what I do.
- [00:16:43.603]And it's not just for the rock class, by the way.
- [00:16:45.619]It's really quite a remarkable thing.
- [00:16:49.820]I also teach trombone, and so I have
- [00:16:51.654]all kinds of trombone related things on here that I store.
- [00:16:58.144]It gets them off of my computer,
- [00:16:59.944]I don't have to worry about it.
- [00:17:01.651]I've got a slide that I'm going to show you
- [00:17:02.985]some of the advantages of using Box.
- [00:17:07.316]Because again, most computers you buy now
- [00:17:10.811]that are flash memory, or that are,
- [00:17:15.685]help me out, the hard drives are no longer ATA.
- [00:17:19.747]Yeah, solid state hard drives, no longer ATA hard drives.
- [00:17:23.776]You know, I, my iTunes alone is two terabytes.
- [00:17:29.140]And there's no way that's going to fit on my computer.
- [00:17:32.820]I have external drives, and that's fine.
- [00:17:35.221]I don't always want to carry them around.
- [00:17:37.220]With Box, I don't have to, I can put anything that I want.
- [00:17:42.329]I have an, I'm not interested in uploading
- [00:17:44.372]my entire iTunes library onto Box,
- [00:17:46.717]but the stuff that I use for instructional purposes
- [00:17:49.481]on a consistent basis, I put it here.
- [00:17:52.708]And you know, I put it into my rock and roll file.
- [00:17:57.166]So that works well, and by the way,
- [00:18:01.276]these things that you see, these are my,
- [00:18:04.910]the ones with numbers in front of them
- [00:18:06.151]are actually my course lectures.
- [00:18:09.366]And it's what is linked over into Canvas.

- [00:18:36.965]what it looks like, and then I can show you in Canvas.
- [00:18:39.473]And it's very close, and by the way,
- [00:18:42.492]I have students, believe it or not,
- [00:18:45.058]who will take the entire course on this.
- [00:18:49.154]The Canvas app works on this.
- [00:18:51.408]I have students who take the entire course
- [00:18:53.811]on the phone, and they can do that.
- [00:18:56.981]I don't recommend it, but they can do it.
- [00:19:00.371]The Canvas app is terrific for the students.
- [00:19:04.667]I think it still has a ways to go for faculty.
- [00:19:08.577]There are some administrative things I'd like
- [00:19:10.762]to be able to do, especially on the iPad,
- [00:19:12.945]that I can't do yet, but we'll get there.
- [00:19:17.287]I do most of the administrative things just on the computer.
- [00:19:21.513]So Box really keeps me behind that firewall.
- [00:19:26.888]It makes it easier to transfer courses
- [00:19:29.617]from semester to semester, if I want
- [00:19:31.637]to reuse elements of the course, just makes life simpler.
- [00:19:38.289]So, the benefits of this, you have access anywhere.
- [00:19:44.046]And if I go downstairs into the School of Music,
- [00:19:47.516]if I don't feel like bringing the hard drive
- [00:19:49.549]with everything on it, I can just access my Box account,
- [00:19:52.882]as you saw me do, right from whatever computer I'm using.
- [00:19:58.816]Or, I can access it from this computer,
- [00:20:00.859]not using my own hard drive.
- [00:20:05.676]I can use it on multiple devices, you know,
- [00:20:08.673]I can put files on this computer if I wish to,
- [00:20:13.444]I can put them on a PC if I wish to.
- [00:20:17.438]Often times if I'm teaching over in Neihardt,
- [00:20:20.840]for an honors course, they have a PC set up over there.
- [00:20:23.754]If I decide I want to use their computer,
- [00:20:25.948]I can just access my Box account, and it works just fine.
- [00:20:31.797]You can use the app, and it works well.
- [00:20:36.232]And if you don't have the app installed, you just log in.
- [00:20:40.492]So that's not always the case.
- [00:20:42.896]And I experimented with using Dropbox,
- [00:20:44.835]I experimented with all kinds of different storage,
- [00:20:47.748]even Apple's iCloud storage, but it just got
- [00:20:51.796]terribly expensive from my end, and it was still not enough.
- [00:20:58.357]The baseline, the free Apple storage,
- [00:21:00.517]the iCloud storage, was what, five gigabyte?
- [00:21:03.802]Yeah, it's pretty small.
- [00:21:06.031]So you really can't use the (drowned out by cough).
- [00:21:08.528]It's easy to share this, you just send links.
- [00:21:13.171]I don't know if you've ever tried to email,
- [00:21:15.669]or even Dropbox a four gigabyte file.
- [00:21:21.637]It's not much fun, it doesn't work very well.
- [00:21:25.178]And so this way, it's just a matter,
- [00:21:26.813]again, of sending a link,
- [00:21:29.938]if I really want someone to be able to see.
- [00:21:33.280]And I, frankly, I very rarely use that function,
- [00:21:35.847]but it's more convenient to do the thing any other way.
- [00:21:40.489]And you can create a public folder,
- [00:21:43.878]and that's something I'm working on this summer,
- [00:21:45.958]with the rock and roll class,
- [00:21:48.396]is to have some things where students can upload
- [00:21:52.437]into my, into the public folder,
- [00:21:55.443]I can upload things, as well.
- [00:21:57.264]You can make things more interactive that way, so.
- [00:22:01.772]All of this is helpful, but none of it would matter
- [00:22:06.869]if Canvas didn't integrate with Box so well.
- [00:22:10.628]And I'll show you how that works, as well.
- [00:22:12.845]Also, as a backup, this is, it's just imperative
- [00:22:16.734]that I have this multiple redundancies of this.
- [00:22:21.413]You know, if I have an entire rock class
- [00:22:23.538]that took me a few years to develop,
- [00:22:26.858]I'm going to have several redundancies,
- [00:22:28.702]because I know what happens to hard drives.
- [00:22:33.003]They, they tend to fail.
- [00:22:36.010]And you know, I don't like being reliant
- [00:22:39.435]on carrying, at one point, I had a 128 gigabyte,
- [00:22:45.066]you know, flash card, I don't want to carry that around.
- [00:22:48.990]And those are unreliable anyway.
- [00:22:51.115]I'm not comfortable, really, with any,
- [00:22:53.286]even an external hard drive like this, over two terabytes.
- [00:22:59.088]When they get into the three to four range,
- [00:23:01.282]and you can get them, but the failure rate is greater.
- [00:23:05.752]So I just, I don't trust them.
- [00:23:12.254]It's, I try to stay away
- [00:23:14.286]from just flat out bashing Blackboard,
- [00:23:16.585]because it does some things really well.

- [00:30:11.525]was really good, it didn't look good at all.
- [00:30:16.169]You have to have a projector that will actually display HD,
- [00:30:19.880]or else you're really limited by the projector.
- [00:30:22.887]So I learned that lesson, as well.
- [00:30:25.209]I had to go back and develop all of my film clips,
- [00:30:29.308]so that they were in the right file format,
- [00:30:31.932]and take them out of full digital video.
- [00:30:34.915]Now the good part of that is,
- [00:30:37.075]suddenly I went from having files, say my Beatles lecture
- [00:30:41.603]being 25 gigabytes, not it's only four.
- [00:30:46.874]So that part helped, it wasn't a big degradation,

- [00:33:42.377]Now the other side of that is, they're also used to Youtube.
- [00:33:45.150]And Youtube stuff is all over the map.
- [00:33:47.996]Some of it is wonderful, some of it is just,
- [00:33:52.230]I can't listen to it.
- [00:33:54.018]Often times I'll find out that my students'
- [00:33:55.690]only point of reference in listening to classical music
- [00:33:58.952]is on Youtube, which drives me crazy,
- [00:34:02.632]because we have Naxos, we have a music library fill of CDs.
- [00:34:06.543]There are many ways they can listen to this
- [00:34:08.855]and have better fidelity.
- [00:34:10.712]So this is ultimately where I want things to go, and
- [00:34:17.597]Canvas, let me get back there now,
- [00:34:22.044]Canvas allows me to
- [00:34:27.211]take all of that work that I enjoy doing,
- [00:34:30.554]and make it pay off, and make it look good.

- [00:35:10.721]I also print out a PDF, when I do the video files

- [00:35:17.942]that I can print as PDF, and so they get the slides,
- [00:35:21.328]so that they don't have to feel like
- [00:35:23.137]they have to furiously take notes.
- [00:35:25.170]They can actually pay attention
- [00:35:26.567]while the lecture's going on,
- [00:35:28.016]and then go back to the PDFs, and see the notes.
- [00:35:31.230]And then it's presented in four sections.

- [00:36:09.452]to digital format, it was back in Arc Hall,

- [00:36:30.048]But one of the reasons it was never developed past VHS was
- [00:36:34.752]they couldn't get a renewal of the licenses

- [00:36:40.046]And they, sometimes in rock and roll and pop music,
- [00:36:42.948]it's really difficult to do that.
- [00:36:44.968]There are certain films, ah, go into the fourth section,

- [00:46:26.097]in a timely fashion, they're at a disadvantage.
- [00:46:30.058]So I, if they have a problem, I want to know about it.

- [00:46:36.767]when I go back and think about giving exams in Blackboard,
- [00:46:42.501]when I'd have 300 students, every exam,
- [00:46:45.844]I would have 20 to 30% of the exams crash.
- [00:46:49.804]And I'd have to go in and manually reset them all.
- [00:46:53.972]I just gave exam three, actually,
- [00:46:57.394]this whole semester, we're through exam three now
- [00:47:00.622]in the course, and I have had a grand total
- [00:47:03.398]of two exams crash this whole semester.
- [00:47:07.069]And it was because of equipment failures
- [00:47:09.495]on their side, it was not due to Canvas.
- [00:47:12.793]So that, I mean, that's made my life so much easier.
- [00:47:15.939]The old idea of Blackboard, where I had to
- [00:47:20.223]stay up until whatever hour of the night,
- [00:47:22.754]and make sure that things didn't crash,
- [00:47:24.786]and I didn't have to reset it,
- [00:47:26.282]those days are over, which is great.
- [00:47:29.627]But what drew me to this is, again,

- [00:47:35.246]because it's a rock class, but I suspect for any class,
