[00:00:07.131]This graduation ceremony was last weekend but just
[00:00:10.142]because the spring semesters over,
[00:00:11.858]I know yours plenty work,
[00:00:13.406]plenty of things going on here on the campus.
[00:00:15.796]Oh, there's a lot going on.
[00:00:16.779]We're getting ready for next year,
[00:00:18.956]once we get commencement over and summer school starts,
[00:00:23.522]and we're thinking about the fall term and the next wave
[00:00:26.319]of students that'll be on campus and one of the things
[00:00:29.581]that we think about all the time,
[00:00:31.145]that we're constantly analyzing is the safety
[00:00:33.348]and the security of our campus.
[00:00:34.820]This is a big deal to parents, this is a big to students,
[00:00:37.210]big deal to our faculty and staff.
[00:00:39.492]We might have up to 35,000 people
[00:00:42.034]on our campus during most of the year.
[00:00:46.841]In fact, Nebraska was one out of 45 universities
[00:00:50.665]and colleges recently to receive an A grade
[00:00:53.846]for safety by Readers Digest magazine
[00:00:57.002]but we, again, are always looking for ways to make sure
[00:01:00.396]that we are as safe and secure as we possibly can be.
[00:01:04.137]And in today's world, there's a number of different threats
[00:01:07.918]that are out there so we're always reviewing our operations
[00:01:11.191]to find ways to become even safer.
[00:01:14.129]This is a topic near and dear to the hearts
[00:01:15.825]of parents, grandparents for their students.
[00:01:17.762]Can you give us an example
[00:01:18.997]of ways you're trying to enhance safety?
[00:01:21.442]Well, one of the things that we're doing currently
[00:01:24.629]is we're combining the expertise
[00:01:26.182]of our university police with our campus planners
[00:01:29.976]to kind of rethink the design
[00:01:31.857]of our outdoor spaces on campus.
[00:01:33.955]THere's a big land area that our campus covers
[00:01:37.304]and on main campus and city campus
[00:01:39.781]and the east campus and on innovation campus.
[00:01:43.173]So a lot of outdoor space and buildings
[00:01:45.713]that we navigate every day.
[00:01:47.845]So how can we improve the public safety
[00:01:49.938]and landscape efficiency simultaneously?
[00:01:53.266]And they've identified through periodic surveys
[00:01:56.845]and an annual nighttime safety walk that they do,
[00:02:00.124]we just held that here recently in the month of April.
[00:02:03.460]There's opportunities for us
[00:02:05.662]to improve both our landscaping as well
[00:02:08.924]as safety related to that landscaping through the removal
[00:02:12.019]of overgrown shrubs or places that need upgrading
[00:02:16.611]of lights along sidewalks and building entrances
[00:02:19.668]and those types of things.
[00:02:20.909]So that we're working hard to bring together all
[00:02:23.108]of that expertise, whether it be people that plan landscapes
[00:02:26.423]or security professionals themselves to help us continue
[00:02:29.579]to ever improve the safety and security of our campus.
