- [00:00:00.536]Alright thank you, Ben, joined now by University
- [00:00:02.003]of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronny Green
- [00:00:04.021]and while the Huskers and Mavericks are about ready
- [00:00:05.661]to play here tonight on the field,
- [00:00:07.900]you're here to tell us about some collaboration
- [00:00:09.517]that goes on between the two campuses.
- [00:00:11.697]Well you know, we operate as a system
- [00:00:14.008]at the university level, we're the flagship campus here
- [00:00:16.951]at UNL, works together as well with our colleagues at UNL,
- [00:00:21.156]it's great to be playing kind of a family game here tonight.
- [00:00:25.337]As well as UNMC and UNK, and so we look forward
- [00:00:30.006]to working together more for innovation,
- [00:00:32.870]it's really excited when we can leverage the faculty
- [00:00:36.078]that we have and we can leverage the different campuses
- [00:00:38.879]of the system and the expertise that we have
- [00:00:41.798]especially at UNMC and at UNL as well,
- [00:00:45.537]so right now we've got a really exciting project
- [00:00:48.849]that is yielding some fruit from just such a type
- [00:00:52.099]of collaboration where we're developing a potential
- [00:00:55.022]alternative to the traditional way that you do colonoscopies
- [00:00:59.148]which is a way to detect and find pre-cancerous types
- [00:01:04.419]of polyps that might lead to colorectal cancer,
- [00:01:07.948]one of the leading causes of cancer that exists
- [00:01:10.558]in the digestive tract and we have a graduate student
- [00:01:15.948]who's working on his PhD in mechanical and materials
- [00:01:18.752]engineering in our College of Engineering,
- [00:01:20.761]Hossein Dughani, who has designed a new robotic tool
- [00:01:24.549]that could make the colonoscopy process much faster,
- [00:01:28.304]less costly, and easier, so from what I understand,
- [00:01:33.470]when you look at colorectal cancer,
- [00:01:35.857]one in 20 Americans, it's a major source of cancer
- [00:01:38.924]and obviously, we all hear, when you turn 50,
- [00:01:42.266]you need to get your colonoscopy and be preventative
- [00:01:45.341]to determine whether you're at risk,
- [00:01:48.015]so we're excited about this work, moving forward from here.
- [00:01:53.836]What is the next step, then, for researchers?
- [00:01:56.723]Well this research team, Dughani, as I mentioned,
- [00:01:59.315]grad student that's leading it, plus Nebraska mechanical
- [00:02:02.491]and materials engineers Ben Terry and Carl Nelson
- [00:02:05.435]in our department there along with colleagues
- [00:02:08.162]from the Center For Advanced Surgical Technology at UNMC
- [00:02:11.820]in Omaha and colleagues at UNL have published a study
- [00:02:15.969]that details a prototype of this new tool
- [00:02:18.989]so now they've filed a patent to protect
- [00:02:22.097]that intellectual property with new tech ventures,
- [00:02:25.295]their commercial tech transfer arm of the university,
- [00:02:28.595]and they're working to look at how to commercialize
- [00:02:31.676]this prototype and move it into practice, so very exciting
- [00:02:36.279]research that we're doing jointly across the system
- [00:02:39.678]with our College of Engineering and with UNMC and with UNL,
- [00:02:43.571]couldn't be prouder of the work.
- [00:02:45.376]Wonderful story of collaboration, but here on the diamond
- [00:02:47.707]tonight, we want a Husker win, right?
- [00:02:49.656]Go Big Red, yeah, we love the Mast too, but go Big Red.
- [00:02:51.976]Rodney Green with us here on our pre-game show
- [00:02:54.633]and we've got first pitch coming up next
- [00:02:56.496]from IMG College, this is the Huskers Sports Network.
