- [00:00:03.263]Hi, I'm Emma Christiansen
- [00:00:05.303]from the College of Saint Benedict, Saint John's University.
- [00:00:08.170]And my project is on Pattern Avoidance on Set Partitions.
- [00:00:11.729]My Experience in an Inquiry-Based
- [00:00:13.788]Learning Differential Equations Course.
- [00:00:15.580]Math Models of Muscle Formation.
- [00:00:16.950]Series Analysis.
- [00:00:17.954]Linear regression model trees for predicting electric loads.
- [00:00:20.772]Mathematical billiards.
- [00:00:22.211]Nation-building.
- [00:00:23.531]Pythagorean triples in the field Q(√2).
- [00:00:26.077]This is a really great opportunity to get
- [00:00:28.289]the standard benefits of a math conference.
- [00:00:30.914]Where you have an exchange of ideas and
- [00:00:32.983]you get to talk and network with people.
- [00:00:35.190]But it has the added benefit of providing
- [00:00:37.208]really concrete evidence that women
- [00:00:39.427]can and do a lot of really cool math.
- [00:00:42.554]I've gotten some people's names and stuff
- [00:00:44.846]up for helpful -- you know --
- [00:00:46.515]if I have questions or anything about going to grad school.
- [00:00:48.980]The first day of orientation I sat down at a table with three other people
- [00:00:52.940]and we've been inseparable ever since.
- [00:00:56.929]Ultimately you have to protect your time
- [00:00:58.630]and make sure you're doing what you need to do to get through
- [00:01:01.453]your classes and also to, like, sleep.
- [00:01:03.361]The industry panel just gives people
- [00:01:06.215]an opportunity to hear from people in all sorts of different fields.
- [00:01:10.474]So I put my finger on the map and said
- [00:01:13.067]"I want to go visit this place."
- [00:01:14.645]I researched the industries in the place
- [00:01:17.227]and flooded the area with resumes and cover letters
- [00:01:23.113]tailored to the industry I was interested in.
- [00:01:26.181]I took a year doing basically a Teach for America-type program
- [00:01:30.218]while getting my security clearance.
- [00:01:31.868]And then I've been at NSA for about three and a half years.
- [00:01:34.981]I think a lot of the success that I've had
- [00:01:38.207]in grad school and in my career has been
- [00:01:41.192]because of the kinds of advice that I got
- [00:01:42.839]from women who had been through difficult situations
- [00:01:45.454]and told me to expect them and ways of potentially dealing with them.
- [00:01:49.601]My adviser actually mentioned that there was a women's conference
- [00:01:54.394]and it was here in Nebraska.
- [00:01:56.232]And she knew I had done this research over the summer.
- [00:01:58.818]And she said it's very welcoming, and --
- [00:02:02.594]Because I'd never presented before
- [00:02:04.337]so she thought it'd be a great place for me
- [00:02:05.982]to make a poster and get myself out there.
