- [00:00:00.378](upbeat music)
- [00:00:04.286]Welcome back, it's halftime
- [00:00:05.223]of the Huskers final home game of the year
- [00:00:06.950]against the Michigan Wolverines.
- [00:00:08.183]Greg Sharpe back in our Huskers Sports Network Studios
- [00:00:09.983]joined now by University of Nebraska
- [00:00:12.116]Lincoln Chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:13.601]We've heard some exciting news recently
- [00:00:15.598]about Nebraska Engineering, and new opportunities
- [00:00:17.750]for both Nebraskan journey students
- [00:00:19.678]and for manufacturing companies
- [00:00:21.456]throughout the State of Nebraska.
- [00:00:22.627]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:00:24.316]Well, we're very pleased
- [00:00:25.918]that our College of Engineering
- [00:00:27.585]and three of our faculty in particular in the College
- [00:00:30.806]are part of a new program funded by
- [00:00:32.695]the Department of Energy's
- [00:00:33.983]Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- [00:00:37.787]where our University was selected
- [00:00:41.197]as one of eight new industrial assessment centers.
- [00:00:44.706]There are about 20 of these that are already in existence
- [00:00:47.750]around the country today,
- [00:00:50.088]and the idea behind these centers
- [00:00:52.330]is that they provide a way for small and medium
- [00:00:55.100]manufacturers in the region, for us here in Nebraska,
- [00:00:59.511]to boost efficiency and energy use.
- [00:01:02.488]So, both saving energy, maybe using renewable energy,
- [00:01:07.025]for them to become more energy efficient.
- [00:01:10.004]We're very, very pleased that three of our faculty
- [00:01:12.773]are leading this effort.
- [00:01:14.313]Robert Williams who's in our
- [00:01:15.600]Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department.
- [00:01:18.299]Bruce Dvorak in Civil Engineering, and George Gogos,
- [00:01:21.293]also in Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
- [00:01:27.017]You know, it's exciting to see this kind of partnership
- [00:01:30.136]with our Department of Energy at the Federal level,
- [00:01:32.484]so where Federal funds are coming to Nebraska.
- [00:01:35.712]The University is then entrusted to provide
- [00:01:38.411]its expertise as part of our Land Grant mission
- [00:01:41.553]that we have at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln,
- [00:01:45.053]providing this kind of valuable service
- [00:01:46.853]to manufacturers in our state,
- [00:01:48.728]helping economic development in our state,
- [00:01:51.425]for them to be able to be larger contributors
- [00:01:53.799]to our state's economy.
- [00:01:55.019]Can you tell us more about
- [00:01:56.153]how the program works?
- [00:01:58.233]Well, if you're a small or medium-sized
- [00:02:00.453]manufacturer, you can apply for a free assessment
- [00:02:04.317]from this center.
- [00:02:05.745]So then, faculty and student teams
- [00:02:08.067]are assigned to go out on-site,
- [00:02:11.026]and evaluate, make their assessment,
- [00:02:14.007]of the energy utilization of the facility
- [00:02:16.543]and provide any recommendations
- [00:02:18.578]for where they see opportunities for improvement
- [00:02:21.244]and enhancement in the energy use side.
- [00:02:25.335]We know in most things, the University included in this,
- [00:02:28.736]that energy cost is a major driver
- [00:02:31.184]in our businesses, and it certainly is for manufacturers.
- [00:02:35.323]So, minimizing that cost and finding out ways
- [00:02:38.937]to be more efficient give manufacturers
- [00:02:41.351]greater resources, and candidly,
- [00:02:44.533]greater opportunity for profitability,
- [00:02:47.041]economically for them.
- [00:02:49.002]At the end of this, they can wind up,
- [00:02:51.245]after their assessment, committing to
- [00:02:54.218]growing their business overall,
- [00:02:56.731]creating opportunities for new products
- [00:02:59.759]from those energy savings, serving new customers,
- [00:03:02.575]creating new jobs.
- [00:03:04.124]It's just another example of Husker power
- [00:03:06.563]through the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:03:08.472]It's a win-win for our faculty,
- [00:03:11.003]for our students and the experience
- [00:03:12.898]that they're gaining through this new center,
- [00:03:14.670]and working with business, and for the manufacturers
- [00:03:19.014]here in this region of the country.
- [00:03:20.342]Very proud of them.
- [00:03:21.252]Wonderful.
- [00:03:22.085]Thank you for sharing that with us.
- [00:03:22.918]Let's go enjoy the second half.
- [00:03:24.358]Go beat the Wolverines.
- [00:03:25.706]Go Big Red!
- [00:03:26.751]Ronnie Green with us here at half time.
- [00:03:27.851]We'll check out the the college scoreboard
- [00:03:28.912]coming up next.
