- [00:00:00.231](relaxing music)
- [00:00:02.022]Greg Sharpe, back at our
- [00:00:02.980]Husker sports network studios.
- [00:00:04.106]It's half time of a Husker's matchup
- [00:00:05.654]in East Lansing against Michigan State,
- [00:00:07.358]and delighted to be joined by
- [00:00:08.577]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:09.756]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:10.812]We'd love to get a chance to talk about
- [00:00:12.073]research projects that are going on on campus,
- [00:00:14.388]and we've heard a lot about
- [00:00:15.609]the Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab,
- [00:00:17.844]Chancellor, over the years,
- [00:00:18.900]and some of the great innovative work
- [00:00:20.405]that they are doing with student athletes
- [00:00:22.737]all the way down to even analyzing saliva
- [00:00:25.417]to monitor how they respond to training.
- [00:00:28.302]What you may not know is that
- [00:00:29.658]the university's researchers are using
- [00:00:31.290]similar processes to better understand
- [00:00:33.450]human behavior in a lot of fields.
- [00:00:35.363]What can you tell us about this research?
- [00:00:37.400]Well, Greg, we established
- [00:00:39.188]what we call CBQ,
- [00:00:40.756]the Center for Brain Biology and Behavior Research
- [00:00:43.970]jointly, actually, with our
- [00:00:45.398]Husker athletics program several years ago.
- [00:00:48.771]It's located in the east stadium,
- [00:00:50.722]the expanded part of the east stadium
- [00:00:52.306]that we're blessed to have.
- [00:00:54.131]It's a cutting edge facility that's involved
- [00:00:57.179]across the board in neuroscience
- [00:00:59.986]and brain biology and behavior.
- [00:01:01.570]But we also have this tie to NAPL through that
- [00:01:06.857]through a saliva laboratory.
- [00:01:09.949]Some might effectually call it the spit lab, right?
- [00:01:12.448](laughs) Yeah.
- [00:01:13.281]So the saliva that you and I produce
- [00:01:15.363]on a regular and on-going basis is full
- [00:01:17.521]of all kinds of biomarkers that tell us
- [00:01:20.240]about the physiology that's going on in the body,
- [00:01:23.776]and those biomarkers are helpful also
- [00:01:26.216]in understanding things like psychology,
- [00:01:28.669]and the early childhood development and education,
- [00:01:31.767]political science, and criminology, and sociology,
- [00:01:35.468]and the social sciences as well.
- [00:01:38.150]So, this lab is one of 10 formally affiliated
- [00:01:42.499]with an international network of like facilities
- [00:01:45.913]around the world.
- [00:01:48.395]There are others here in the US, in Colorado,
- [00:01:50.510]and in Georgia, and in North Carolina,
- [00:01:52.785]as well as abroad, in Canada and Brazil,
- [00:01:55.926]the UK, Germany, and Hungary.
- [00:01:57.919]So, we're very pleased to have that capacity
- [00:02:02.275]to be doing research in these areas
- [00:02:04.507]through this part of
- [00:02:05.340]the Center for Brain Biology and Behavior Research.
- [00:02:08.120]Seems like a game changer to be able
- [00:02:09.797]to analyze critical aspects of human biology
- [00:02:12.036]and behavior using saliva.
- [00:02:13.335]That's just about as non-invasive as it gets, right?
- [00:02:16.629]Well, it is.
- [00:02:17.462]I mean, we produce it everyday on a ongoing basis
- [00:02:19.910]like I said, and it does provide this
- [00:02:21.799]kind of wealth of information that helps us
- [00:02:23.912]dig down underneath the physiology
- [00:02:25.860]that's going on in the body,
- [00:02:28.176]helps us to understand and analyze
- [00:02:30.814]biological processes that are underlying.
- [00:02:33.374]Maybe a particular behavior that we're seeing
- [00:02:37.793]in young people, for example, or as I talked about
- [00:02:40.574]in criminology, and helping understand
- [00:02:43.860]things that contribute to crime.
- [00:02:47.042]It helps us to get a better understanding
- [00:02:49.692]of the basis for human behavior
- [00:02:52.210]to kind of unravel that.
- [00:02:53.633]So you can kind of begin to see
- [00:02:54.903]the applications are somewhat limitless
- [00:02:58.236]and how we might use that kind of information
- [00:03:01.500]in our research, as well as, of course,
- [00:03:04.020]helping us understand athletic performance
- [00:03:06.501]where the DNA appeal was original formed from.
- [00:03:10.770]So this saliva bioscience lab
- [00:03:13.079]is great infrastructure for us,
- [00:03:15.029]a very important tool for our researchers
- [00:03:17.998]that helps us be on the leading edge
- [00:03:19.704]of research internationally here at the
- [00:03:21.371]University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:22.712]Another good look and example
- [00:03:24.053]of the great work being done here
- [00:03:25.515]in the UN and L campus.
- [00:03:26.408]Good to see you, and let's go get a win here
- [00:03:28.524]in the second half.
- [00:03:29.418]Go big red. Beat the Spartans.
- [00:03:31.371]Ronnie Green with us here at half time.
- [00:03:32.878]We'll check out the college scoreboard
- [00:03:33.727]coming up next.
