- [00:00:00.247](slow funky music)
- [00:00:02.319]Welcome back.
- [00:00:03.152]Half-time of the Husker's match up here
- [00:00:04.406]at Pinnacle Bank Arena,
- [00:00:05.481]joined now by the University of Nebraska, Lincoln
- [00:00:07.429]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.368]We always like to talk about research projects
- [00:00:10.444]that are going on on campus.
- [00:00:12.105]Nebraska certainly does that as well as anybody,
- [00:00:14.980]and we've got one going on
- [00:00:16.028]that talks about being fit, staying in shape,
- [00:00:18.917]and the importance that is for all students,
- [00:00:20.887]not just student athletes,
- [00:00:22.242]and it could mean the difference
- [00:00:23.364]between getting an A, B, C, or in classrooms.
- [00:00:25.930]Tell us more about this research.
- [00:00:27.101]Well, we have a lot of research that we do
- [00:00:30.448]in the area of health, and related to health and wellness,
- [00:00:35.441]and well-being.
- [00:00:36.801]In particular, we're very pleased
- [00:00:40.008]that we have a major research collaboration currently,
- [00:00:44.403]jointly between some of our faculty here
- [00:00:46.764]at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln,
- [00:00:48.474]and Penn State, one of our Big Ten partner institutions.
- [00:00:52.567]And that research is looking at, in particular,
- [00:00:56.159]students' fitness levels,
- [00:00:58.365]and how their fitness levels and iron, you know,
- [00:01:02.694]as a mineral for us,
- [00:01:06.135]how their iron status can impact
- [00:01:09.195]how well they do academically.
- [00:01:11.152]So, looking at grade point averages of students,
- [00:01:14.768]how fit they are, how they keep themselves in good shape,
- [00:01:19.002]and then what their iron status is associated with that,
- [00:01:22.411]is showing that we probably
- [00:01:23.742]see them doing better academically.
- [00:01:26.647]So those who were fit, had normal iron levels,
- [00:01:30.187]in that study, achieved higher grade point averages
- [00:01:33.534]than the unfit women who were iron deficient in the study.
- [00:01:38.224]So, important information there coming out of that research.
- [00:01:41.883]It's pretty valuable when we start thinking
- [00:01:44.425]about how that can help our students perform
- [00:01:47.156]and do better academically, from research like this as well.
- [00:01:52.734]Beyond the basic health and wellness,
- [00:01:54.678]the research findings make a pretty compelling argument
- [00:01:57.247]for thinking about nutrition, healthy choices,
- [00:01:59.961]and the university offers support
- [00:02:01.433]in going down that path toward better wellness as well,
- [00:02:03.302]doesn't it?
- [00:02:04.135]Well, student life, while our students are on campus
- [00:02:06.909]studying with us for their degrees,
- [00:02:09.884]is an important aspect
- [00:02:10.983]of how we like to support them as well.
- [00:02:14.132]For students who live on campus,
- [00:02:16.334]housing and dining is an important part of that.
- [00:02:19.710]Or if they live off campus,
- [00:02:21.873]you have food choices that are available on the campus,
- [00:02:25.106]campus recreation.
- [00:02:26.823]We have a very robust campus recreation and wellness program
- [00:02:31.679]across the campus,
- [00:02:33.173]both on City Campus, on East Campus,
- [00:02:36.667]where students have access
- [00:02:38.339]to world-class recreation facilities,
- [00:02:41.498]and we're very proud of how much those get utilized
- [00:02:44.732]by our students.
- [00:02:46.057]So, encouraging that wellness of our student population,
- [00:02:50.353]and available access to good and high quality food as well.
- [00:02:56.120]And, of course,
- [00:02:56.953]the findings like we're seeing in this research,
- [00:02:58.986]we want to apply those findings,
- [00:03:01.027]and we want our students to be aware of those
- [00:03:03.716]and of making healthy choices,
- [00:03:06.838]in how they live their daily life on campus,
- [00:03:10.299]and extending that information out to them.
- [00:03:14.259]We also certainly want to extend that out
- [00:03:16.482]beyond the campus too, right?
- [00:03:18.461]So, we want the general public to know about
- [00:03:21.231]the importance of this kind of research
- [00:03:23.721]and how it can benefit human well-being
- [00:03:26.524]across the board.
- [00:03:27.592]Just another way we're leading in food and health.
- [00:03:30.459]Great topic to have here, kind of in the heart of winter,
- [00:03:32.757]when people get cooped up a little bit,
- [00:03:34.295]maybe don't take as good care of themselves.
- [00:03:35.706]Great to see you, we'll chat down the road.
- [00:03:37.572]Yep, go Big Red.
- [00:03:38.570]Ronnie Green with us here at half-time.
- [00:03:40.599]We'll check out the scoreboard, coming up next.
