- [00:00:00.061]Welcome back, it's halftime at the Huskers'
- [00:00:01.609]matchup with the Perdue Boilermakers.
- [00:00:03.919]Greg Sharp back in our Huskers' Sports Network studios,
- [00:00:06.582]and delighted to be joined by Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:09.256]And the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's
- [00:00:11.187]always had a great tradition of delivering
- [00:00:13.031]learning opportunities through distance education,
- [00:00:15.728]and obviously these days,
- [00:00:16.975]much of distance learning takes place online.
- [00:00:19.738]And we saw recently a US News and World Report
- [00:00:22.953]releasing of some rankings specific to online programs.
- [00:00:25.803]Give us an update, how'd Nebraska do?
- [00:00:27.755]Well, you know, you're right.
- [00:00:30.568]Greg, we've seen online education
- [00:00:32.894]take on more and more of an important role.
- [00:00:35.370]Kind of the old idea of distance learning
- [00:00:37.858]was by video and that kind of thing, over TV.
- [00:00:40.637]Now it's kind of online
- [00:00:42.388]learning and ways that we create
- [00:00:45.294]that digital learning environment
- [00:00:47.620]for a number of our fields,
- [00:00:49.203]and it's become more and more important to us.
- [00:00:51.610]They're just like our on-campus courses,
- [00:00:53.815]where they engage students.
- [00:00:55.595]In fact, a lot of them actually are hybrid courses,
- [00:00:58.396]where there's some students in a classroom
- [00:01:00.270]and some students not in a classroom, but online.
- [00:01:03.212]We have seen some of the recent rankings
- [00:01:05.895]that highlight excellence in a number of our online
- [00:01:09.434]teaching programs in particular.
- [00:01:11.868]We're very proud to see they're online
- [00:01:13.445]graduate education programs, we're ranked fourth
- [00:01:16.299]in the nation, in the new national rankings
- [00:01:18.311]that were released this month.
- [00:01:20.767]Number four in the nation,
- [00:01:22.054]but also number one in the Big Ten,
- [00:01:24.612]in our academic alliance in the Big Ten Conference,
- [00:01:27.436]which is helping empower Nebraska educators
- [00:01:30.534]and administrators who are looking to advance their skills
- [00:01:33.544]as they are in the teaching profession
- [00:01:35.620]or in our K-12 school systems in particular.
- [00:01:39.115]There are three other Nebraska programs
- [00:01:41.501]that also were very highly ranked
- [00:01:43.546]in this newest set of the rankings.
- [00:01:45.593]Our online graduate engineering program
- [00:01:47.682]was ranked 18th, number 18 in the country.
- [00:01:50.999]Our online Masters of Business Administration,
- [00:01:53.187]MBA was number 21 in the country,
- [00:01:56.347]and our online Bachelor of Applied Science,
- [00:02:00.077]which is an agriculturally-related applied science degree
- [00:02:03.728]was number 36 nationally.
- [00:02:06.301]So it's a, I think it's a real testament
- [00:02:07.946]to the quality of these programs,
- [00:02:09.790]the education that students are receiving,
- [00:02:11.990]either all or in part from online educations
- [00:02:16.089]here at the University.
- [00:02:17.731]We're all very prod of the quality of education.
- [00:02:19.522]We know it's top-notch here at Nebraska.
- [00:02:21.205]Having professors who are applying in the classroom
- [00:02:23.623]what they discover though research,
- [00:02:25.462]that's a big part of it as well, isn't it?
- [00:02:27.062]It is, and we've,
- [00:02:29.175]have a professor here recently, Jenny Dauer,
- [00:02:32.789]who's in our School of Natural Resources
- [00:02:34.755]over in the Ag College,
- [00:02:36.802]it is a great example of that.
- [00:02:38.931]Where in a Freshman-level, 100 level course,
- [00:02:42.289]she's been teaching about science literacy
- [00:02:44.603]and incorporating science literacy into the course.
- [00:02:47.451]And what she's found and recently published is
- [00:02:50.136]that students who use kind of scientific decision making
- [00:02:54.179]in the way they think about things
- [00:02:56.029]are much more prone to make decisions based on facts
- [00:03:00.333]than on sentiment, right,
- [00:03:02.119]and to have more justifications that are kind of
- [00:03:04.097]based in that way of approaching things.
- [00:03:06.725]So her research has been used,
- [00:03:09.212]can be used by all science educators
- [00:03:12.095]in the way that they teach
- [00:03:13.899]and inform the science process,
- [00:03:16.573]and teach science more critically
- [00:03:18.417]and to fully engage with that field.
- [00:03:20.790]And of course, she's applying the research herself,
- [00:03:22.988]as I mentioned in that class
- [00:03:24.554]that she has freshmen students across
- [00:03:27.251]the Ag Sciences and Natural Resources discipline.
- [00:03:30.168]So our students, you know,
- [00:03:31.323]are directly benefiting from faculty research,
- [00:03:34.019]even in this case within the classroom.
- [00:03:37.183]Research that Jenny's been doing in that class
- [00:03:40.130]in Ag Sciences.
- [00:03:42.131]Very nice honor for her
- [00:03:42.964]and thank you for updating us on her.
- [00:03:44.486]Good to see you and have a great week.
- [00:03:45.932]Yeah, go Big Red!
- [00:03:47.459]Ronnie Green here with us at halftime.
- [00:03:48.993]We're back with a scoreboard update, coming up next.
