- [00:00:00.296]Matt Coatney back with you, we're at halftime.
- [00:00:02.218]Nebraska and Connecticut in women's basketball
- [00:00:05.034]and this half time we have the first of what's gonna be
- [00:00:07.161]several talks we have this season with University of
- [00:00:09.967]Nebraska Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:13.270]Ronnie, it's great having you here in our women's
- [00:00:14.565]basketball halftime.
- [00:00:15.501]It's great to be here, man,
- [00:00:16.953]and to see our huskers playing really tough schedules
- [00:00:20.482]this year and up against the Connecticut tonight
- [00:00:23.877]and pleasure to be part of the game.
- [00:00:26.869]We all know it's a special time of year,
- [00:00:28.850]and for the university it's particularly special
- [00:00:31.097]because it's the end of the semester,
- [00:00:32.546]which means commencement ceremonies were held last weekend.
- [00:00:35.845]As a father I got to see my daughter Hannah graduate
- [00:00:39.325]with a degree in communication studies from the
- [00:00:40.907]University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:42.095]For you, as a chancellor, what does this mean to you
- [00:00:45.307]that you got to preside over that commencement?
- [00:00:47.408]Well you know, I always say that the two
- [00:00:50.208]most special times of the year on a university campus
- [00:00:53.025]are the beginning of school and commencement.
- [00:00:55.934]Because you see those new students and the talent
- [00:00:59.905]coming in at the beginning of an academic term
- [00:01:02.436]where the future they have ahead of them and the
- [00:01:05.083]opportunities they're gonna have at the university.
- [00:01:06.832]And then at commencement, to see that success.
- [00:01:09.050]The enjoyment and celebration of attaining those degrees.
- [00:01:13.553]Whether they're undergraduate degrees,
- [00:01:15.135]whether they're graduate degrees, professional degrees.
- [00:01:17.739]So last weekend was a very special time.
- [00:01:21.338]A lot of people don't think December commencement
- [00:01:23.869]is a big commencement, but it is a big commencement,
- [00:01:26.321]we had over 1400 degrees awarded last Friday and Saturday.
- [00:01:30.513]Graduate degrees and law degrees on Friday and then
- [00:01:34.438]the undergraduate degrees on Saturday.
- [00:01:37.052]Very special that we were able to have the former
- [00:01:40.086]secretary of defense and US Senator from Nebraska,
- [00:01:43.599]Chuck Hagle, as our featured commencement speaker
- [00:01:46.892]with a great message to the graduates from him.
- [00:01:50.685]So just, it's always amazing to watch the talent that's
- [00:01:55.233]going across the stage receiving each one of them
- [00:01:57.851]their own diplomas and that commencement.
- [00:02:00.557]And for you, as a parent, I know how that feels.
- [00:02:02.935]Three of our four have been through that process
- [00:02:05.782]here at the university as well.
- [00:02:08.129]So just a great weekend, celebrate it.
- [00:02:10.835]So you're leading the university in an effort
- [00:02:12.966]to get more students to graduation, isn't that right?
- [00:02:15.957]That's right, so when we have 1400 graduates
- [00:02:19.680]in the fall commencement, we had a significantly larger
- [00:02:22.364]number in the spring and over 5,000 graduates a year
- [00:02:25.645]that we're putting out from the University of Nebraska,
- [00:02:28.308]Lincoln.
- [00:02:29.141]The success of getting them there,
- [00:02:31.591]from the students who start with us,
- [00:02:34.335]who attain those degrees and complete those degrees,
- [00:02:37.606]we want more and more and more to add to that success
- [00:02:41.080]because it's our workforce, it's our citizen (mumbles)
- [00:02:43.856]that we're developing in these graduate degree,
- [00:02:47.719]our degree holders coming from the university.
- [00:02:50.580]So we're looking really hard at how we continue to
- [00:02:53.942]increase the percentage of our students who start with us
- [00:02:57.825]that complete those degrees, who complete them
- [00:02:59.999]time efficiently in four years, we hope,
- [00:03:03.284]certainly in an undergrad degree and the same in
- [00:03:06.829]masters and PhD candidates and professional degree
- [00:03:09.488]candidates.
- [00:03:10.321]So it's always special to see that come to culmination
- [00:03:14.039]and see those students now achieving that success,
- [00:03:18.111]going out to make their difference in the world
- [00:03:21.234]across all spectrums.
- [00:03:22.972]Whether they're 21 years or 22 years old or whether
- [00:03:25.325]they're 55 or 60 years old, some of our graduates.
- [00:03:29.375]So a very special time.
- [00:03:31.710]Well thank you very much for you time
- [00:03:33.391]and we're looking forward to seeing you in halftime
- [00:03:35.383]at more women's basketball games.
- [00:03:36.688]Looking forward to it through the season and
- [00:03:39.394]having the opportunity to talk about a lot of the great
- [00:03:41.526]things that happen at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:43.618]Alright, there's chancellor Ronnie Green,
- [00:03:45.158]Matt Coatney with you, we're at the half.
- [00:03:47.096]Nebraska and Ucon in women's basketball.
- [00:03:49.216]We'll have more halftime activities in a few moments.
