- [00:00:00.168]Greg Sharpe back with you, Countdown to Kick-Off.
- [00:00:02.147]Huskers and Hawkeyes are about
- [00:00:03.423]to wrap up the regular season.
- [00:00:05.243]Both teams both eligible, both teams will play
- [00:00:07.661]in postseason, Huskers hoping to play next week
- [00:00:10.560]in the Big Ten Championship Game, but they'll need
- [00:00:12.307]some help tomorrow from the Gophers.
- [00:00:14.246]We're delighted to be joined now by
- [00:00:15.325]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:18.524]Happy belated Thanksgiving.
- [00:00:19.824]Did you get some turkey, some eats yesterday?
- [00:00:22.332]We actually took our Thanksgiving on Sunday,
- [00:00:25.084]this past Sunday with our family, and--
- [00:00:26.831]You're trying to recover, then.
- [00:00:28.562]Jane and I were out working on the property yesterday
- [00:00:31.308]morning before we got up and left with the teams, so--
- [00:00:33.080]Good for you.
- [00:00:33.927]We had a good Thanksgiving, though.
- [00:00:34.856]How about you?
- [00:00:35.709]A very good Thanksgiving.
- [00:00:36.702]I know the students generally scatter for a couple of days,
- [00:00:39.291]a little chance to go recoup right before
- [00:00:40.853]they get ready for final exams in a few weeks.
- [00:00:42.611]Yeah, it's grinding down to an end here,
- [00:00:45.717]very, very fast.
- [00:00:46.942]And then a few weeks ahead of us before the holidays.
- [00:00:49.090]You know, this time of year, especially we shared
- [00:00:52.544]with the campus this week how grateful we are
- [00:00:55.052]for the opportunity that we have in education and research
- [00:00:59.069]and to serve our state as
- [00:01:00.352]the land grant, flagship university of this state.
- [00:01:03.074]It's been a record year for us, we've talked about that
- [00:01:06.261]on the program here several times during the season.
- [00:01:08.612]Our record in enrollment this fall,
- [00:01:10.446]our record in research and creative activity and scholarship
- [00:01:13.574]of our faculty, our students are setting records,
- [00:01:16.592]our athletic programs are doing extremely well
- [00:01:20.052]in all four sports this fall.
- [00:01:21.956]So it's just been a great fall for us,
- [00:01:24.795]and we've been very appreciative
- [00:01:26.687]and thankful for all of our blessings.
- [00:01:28.371]I know you have a lot of other things
- [00:01:29.468]that you're grateful for here
- [00:01:30.681]during your first year as chancellor.
- [00:01:32.910]Well, we celebrated this past week, just on Tuesday,
- [00:01:37.020]the opportunity to remember Prem Paul again.
- [00:01:39.828]We've mentioned his name several times this fall.
- [00:01:42.345]We lost Prem in September after a long fight with cancer,
- [00:01:46.281]our vice chancellor for research for about 15 years,
- [00:01:49.607]and we dedicated the Whittier School in Lincoln there
- [00:01:52.440]as part of our campus, renamed it and had
- [00:01:54.576]the formal celebration with Prem's family this week,
- [00:01:58.239]the new Prem S. Paul Research Center at Whittier School.
- [00:02:02.442]He was so known for thinking big,
- [00:02:05.932]and we're in the Big Ten, we think big.
- [00:02:07.736]And Prem was well-known for helping us to think big
- [00:02:11.579]about our research programs over the last 15 years.
- [00:02:14.221]It was great to see his family,
- [00:02:15.823]and I know his widow, Missi,
- [00:02:18.325]is listening to the game today,
- [00:02:19.828]and is excited to see us playing here in Iowa City.
- [00:02:23.665]Well, happy Thanksgiving to her.
- [00:02:25.041]Well, we also learned this week about some Nebraska faculty
- [00:02:28.629]who've received some pretty significant recognition
- [00:02:32.181]in the academic world.
- [00:02:33.612]Well, last year, we were really, really proud of the fact
- [00:02:36.236]that eight of our faculty were named as fellows in
- [00:02:39.144]the American Association for the Advancement of Science,
- [00:02:41.727]AAAS, as it's known, the leading scientific society
- [00:02:45.476]in the world, and it's its highest honor
- [00:02:49.621]to be named a fellow of the society.
- [00:02:51.908]So this year, we've just learned that five of our faculty
- [00:02:55.496]will be named fellows in February
- [00:02:57.771]in that ceremony in Boston.
- [00:02:59.902]Very excited for them and for the work that they've done
- [00:03:03.280]in their fields to gain that recognition.
- [00:03:06.072]This year, we're very pleased that Dr. Patrick Dussault,
- [00:03:09.573]Charles Bessey professor of chemistry
- [00:03:11.918]in our College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:03:13.479]Mary Anne Holmes, emeritus professor
- [00:03:15.604]of earth and atmospheric sciences,
- [00:03:17.828]also in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:03:19.819]Gary Pickard, professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine
- [00:03:22.584]and Biomedical Sciences and
- [00:03:24.108]the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources,
- [00:03:26.760]part of our campus.
- [00:03:28.247]Robert Powers, also a professor of chemistry in
- [00:03:31.045]the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:03:32.572]and Mary Willis, professor of nutrition and health sciences
- [00:03:35.562]in the College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:03:38.574]All being named to AAAS.
- [00:03:40.687]Last year, we were number three in the country
- [00:03:43.062]in the number of faculty that received that award,
- [00:03:46.864]and this year, we'll be in the top end again
- [00:03:49.261]as these five have brought great honor to our university.
- [00:03:52.268]That is fantastic, and obviously a huge recruiting tool
- [00:03:54.794]to be able to go show prospective students,
- [00:03:57.284]you're coming, you're gonna to be learning from some of
- [00:03:59.043]the best in their fields. Some of the very top faculty
- [00:04:01.417]in the world.
- [00:04:03.235]You know, again, this week of Thanksgiving,
- [00:04:05.337]you just look around us and we say how lucky we are
- [00:04:09.534]to be surrounded with the talent that we have
- [00:04:11.856]in Nebraska and at our great university.
- [00:04:14.520]Well we're getting ready here to play
- [00:04:15.889]on a national stage, this football game,
- [00:04:18.025]great exposure for the university.
- [00:04:20.162]Which has kind of become a staple for Nebraska football
- [00:04:22.489]to play in this game, one of the few games
- [00:04:24.690]that are played on this Friday.
- [00:04:25.891]But many folks may not realize that every week,
- [00:04:27.470]the university shares critical research data
- [00:04:29.827]to a national audience.
- [00:04:32.143]Well, that's right Greg.
- [00:04:33.281]You know, being a part of the Big Ten Conference,
- [00:04:35.603]and the academic part of the Big Ten Conference,
- [00:04:37.791]some of the greatest research universities in the world
- [00:04:40.456]are part of the Big Ten.
- [00:04:41.768]And every day, our faculty and leading research centers
- [00:04:47.097]like the Water for Food Institute that
- [00:04:48.954]the University of Nebraska system has that's focused on
- [00:04:52.006]that big challenge and issue
- [00:04:53.696]of water and food security around the world.
- [00:04:56.587]Like early childhood education
- [00:04:58.264]and our Center for Children, Youth, Families and Schools.
- [00:05:02.306]The Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium,
- [00:05:05.271]and I could go off and list a whole list
- [00:05:07.715]of these prominent research centers.
- [00:05:10.867]This time of year, our farming community
- [00:05:13.549]is wrapping up their harvest.
- [00:05:14.878]You know, that's our, kind of an annual harvest Thanksgiving
- [00:05:17.653]was the way we had originally perceived this holiday
- [00:05:20.573]that we celebrate, was around the coming in of the harvest.
- [00:05:23.742]And they're thinking about their next year
- [00:05:25.896]and are they gonna have enough water,
- [00:05:28.253]and what's the climate going to be for them,
- [00:05:30.319]and what's the precipitation gonna be like?
- [00:05:32.125]We have the National Drought Mitigation Center on our campus
- [00:05:35.149]that is the only one of its kind anywhere in the world
- [00:05:38.506]that people all over the world rely on that center
- [00:05:41.882]to tell them how we're going to look for precipitation
- [00:05:45.789]and rainfall that leads to our crops
- [00:05:47.681]and our surpluses that we have.
- [00:05:49.475]So every day, the University of Nebraska's faculty
- [00:05:52.581]doing critically important research for Nebraska
- [00:05:55.332]and all over the world.
- [00:05:56.557]Very, very good.
- [00:05:57.625]We're here at the University of Iowa.
- [00:05:58.943]Great to have you with us as here,
- [00:06:00.208]we're looking out over there,
- [00:06:01.440]their fabulous medical facilities, the children's hospital
- [00:06:04.371]here, and one of our good Big Ten neighbors here,
- [00:06:06.439]right next door.
- [00:06:07.508]That's absolutely right.
- [00:06:09.328]Looking forward to a big day, and go Big Red.
- [00:06:11.480]Absolutely.
- [00:06:12.313]Good to see you, happy Thanksgiving.
- [00:06:13.146]Tell Jane hello for me You bet.
- [00:06:14.429]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to Kick-Off.
