- [00:00:02.516]Welcome back, Countdown to Kickoff,
- [00:00:03.589]here on the Huskers Sports super final home game
- [00:00:05.394]of the year, against the Maryland Terrapins,
- [00:00:07.537]and joined now by the
- [00:00:08.627]University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.281]It is starting to feel more like late fall,
- [00:00:13.982]winter, as we get going on a chilly Saturday morning here,
- [00:00:16.618]but Thanksgiving's coming up, a good time of year,
- [00:00:20.303]our friends in the fields are starting to wrap up harvests,
- [00:00:23.538]a lot of things happening around here.
- [00:00:25.463]Well, it is kind of Thanksgiving time of year, you know,
- [00:00:27.630]this next week we're looking at times
- [00:00:29.658]for our families to get together,
- [00:00:31.303]and enjoy the holiday of Thanksgiving,
- [00:00:33.395]and as you've said, wrapping up harvests,
- [00:00:35.352]and it has been a good one in Nebraska,
- [00:00:37.274]you know, prices might be down,
- [00:00:39.005]but there's a lot of, a lot of crop
- [00:00:41.938]that I know our farming community is glad
- [00:00:44.094]to get out of the field,
- [00:00:44.970]and we're thankful for a lot of things this time of year,
- [00:00:49.340]you know, the gratitude that we have for being able
- [00:00:51.706]to live in this great country,
- [00:00:53.245]and the freedom we enjoy in this country,
- [00:00:55.801]the gratitude for the University, and the impact
- [00:00:58.880]that the University has every day on our students
- [00:01:02.116]and on our state.
- [00:01:03.999]We've been talking a lot
- [00:01:05.190]about being a distinctive Big Ten University,
- [00:01:08.412]and becoming even more so in the future.
- [00:01:11.252]We're thankful for that, and you know,
- [00:01:14.383]we're preparing tomorrow's work force every day
- [00:01:17.029]for our state here at the Unversity.
- [00:01:18.944]And you know, the fact that we have
- [00:01:21.520]about two billion dollars a year
- [00:01:22.673]in economic impact on our state
- [00:01:26.600]is a big deal, and we're very thankful
- [00:01:29.455]that we have the opportunity to be in this business.
- [00:01:33.005]This is a chance for you to talk
- [00:01:35.265]about representing the state.
- [00:01:37.230]You mentioned in the University,
- [00:01:38.496]in a lot of different ways, on a national stage as well.
- [00:01:40.934]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:01:42.727]Well, this past week I had got back on Tuesday
- [00:01:46.393]from being at the national meeting
- [00:01:48.998]of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities,
- [00:01:51.557]the organization that represents all
- [00:01:53.244]public universities across the United States,
- [00:01:56.343]and of course we're a public land-grant university
- [00:01:58.900]here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:02:00.731]and I was asked to take on a leadership role
- [00:02:03.919]that I hadn't anticipated taking on,
- [00:02:05.843]but I'm very pleased to be able to do that.
- [00:02:09.955]The association has asked me to join its board of directors
- [00:02:14.189]for the next two years, and to serve as the chair
- [00:02:17.295]of one of the seven commissions,
- [00:02:19.365]of the APLU, as we call the organization.
- [00:02:23.539]That's the Commission on Food, Energy
- [00:02:25.564]and Renewable Resources,
- [00:02:27.744]which makes up what a lot of people think of
- [00:02:30.414]as kind of the land-grant picture,
- [00:02:34.210]it's everything to do with agriculture,
- [00:02:35.620]natural resources, environment, human sciences,
- [00:02:39.575]all of those areas of our public university.
- [00:02:42.909]So, excited about that,
- [00:02:45.004]and having the opportunity to work at that national level
- [00:02:48.440]with our peers around the US,
- [00:02:51.264]in the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.
- [00:02:54.579]Very nice, very nice for you to be able to do that.
- [00:02:56.281]Good honor for you.
- [00:02:57.305]We're visiting with University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:58.500]Chancellor Ronnie Green here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:03:01.568]So here's something I didn't know about,
- [00:03:02.774]Nebraska Extension educators,
- [00:03:04.420]they're doing all of the above, plus,
- [00:03:06.336]they're even creating curriculum that is used in
- [00:03:08.056]K-12 schools in Nebraska, and around the world,
- [00:03:10.136]what can you tell us about that?
- [00:03:11.531]Well, you know, we were talking about the
- [00:03:13.104]Land-Grant Commission here a minute ago,
- [00:03:16.566]the Land-Grand mission three parts to it.
- [00:03:19.162]So, we're a University that serves through education
- [00:03:22.189]of our students, through the research
- [00:03:24.624]and creative activity and scholarship
- [00:03:26.524]that we contribute to new knowledge,
- [00:03:28.277]and building new knowledge, and then Extension,
- [00:03:31.408]that's now a little over a 100 years old in our mission.
- [00:03:34.306]That's that translation of what we do in the University,
- [00:03:37.325]out to the citizens of the state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:40.774]And a big part of Extension has to do
- [00:03:42.960]with not just translating the research,
- [00:03:46.398]but also working with youth in those communities,
- [00:03:49.821]and having Extension educators located throughout the state,
- [00:03:53.917]and touching all 93 counties in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:58.338]The 4-H program is probably the most visible thing
- [00:04:01.284]that people relate to with Extension, long standing program.
- [00:04:06.405]We're very proud in Nebraska
- [00:04:08.646]that we lead the United States in the number
- [00:04:11.026]of students who participate in 4-H,
- [00:04:14.231]of those who are age-eligible for 4-H,
- [00:04:17.519]they get something over 140,000 young people
- [00:04:20.565]across our state that are members of 4-H.
- [00:04:23.962]I was a member of 4-H years ago myself,
- [00:04:27.121]and know the benefits that come from that,
- [00:04:29.241]and leadership development, and opportunities
- [00:04:31.625]to help build these young people.
- [00:04:34.897]In addition, you know, Extension spends a lot
- [00:04:36.136]of time just translating what we do at the University,
- [00:04:39.294]and that's some in agriculture, certainly,
- [00:04:42.095]it has been a traditional mainstay of Extension,
- [00:04:44.823]but also in a lot of other areas.
- [00:04:46.999]Nutrition, and food safety, and urban issues
- [00:04:51.272]that are out there for the public,
- [00:04:53.928]through all kinds of dissemination mechanisms
- [00:04:56.529]that they have to do that.
- [00:04:58.931]The digital age we live in helps them do that as well.
- [00:05:02.491]So I'm very, very proud
- [00:05:03.743]of what Extension is doing with our youth,
- [00:05:06.310]with adults throughout all 93 counties in the state.
- [00:05:09.452]Another example of the University making an impact
- [00:05:11.374]at different levels around the state of Nebraska.
- [00:05:13.801]Well, today, we are, for the first time,
- [00:05:15.912]playing the University of Maryland as a conference member,
- [00:05:19.335]we're no longer the new kid on the block
- [00:05:21.742]in the Big Ten Conference.
- [00:05:22.761]You, I know, have spent a little time around
- [00:05:24.075]the University of Maryland.
- [00:05:24.908]And what about this school that's come into the Big Ten?
- [00:05:26.807]Well, you know, we became this East Coast all the way out
- [00:05:31.025]to Nebraska conference here a few years ago
- [00:05:33.642]with the addition of Rutgers,
- [00:05:35.022]and the University of Maryland,
- [00:05:36.150]and the College Park as part of the Big Ten.
- [00:05:39.271]I did grow up coming next door to Maryland.
- [00:05:42.786]I'm a Virginian by birth, I'm a native there,
- [00:05:46.986]so I know a fair amount about the University of Maryland.
- [00:05:49.504]I've actually lived close
- [00:05:51.068]to the University of Maryland campus when I was in
- [00:05:53.854]Washington DC earlier in my career.
- [00:05:56.568]Great university, great Land-Grant University,
- [00:06:00.270]just like us for the state of Maryland.
- [00:06:02.938]Very historic University,
- [00:06:04.775]one of the older parts of the land-grant system,
- [00:06:08.136]if you will, and we're looking forward
- [00:06:09.811]to them being here today,
- [00:06:11.591]and certainly looking forward
- [00:06:12.598]to a win for our Huskers, go Big Red.
- [00:06:15.332]Absolutely, great to see you.
- [00:06:16.528]Have a great weekend and happy Thanksgiving,
- [00:06:18.146]we'll see you next week in Iowa City.
- [00:06:19.854]We sure will, it's a short week, huh?
- [00:06:21.672]Absolutely. Happy Thanksgiving.
