- [00:00:00.346](bouncy music)
- [00:00:02.045]Welcome back to Ohio Stadium.
- [00:00:03.376]We are sitting high atop the Horseshoe
- [00:00:05.624]getting ready for the Huskers matchup tonight
- [00:00:07.351]against the Ohio State Buckeyes
- [00:00:08.959]and glad to be joined by University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:11.400]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:13.344]You've been busy since you've been in town.
- [00:00:14.848]You just came form the alumni huddle, right?
- [00:00:17.193]Yeah, just got here and athletics was having the
- [00:00:19.904]Husker Huddle over on a different part of campus
- [00:00:21.929]in the Alumni Center.
- [00:00:22.992]Really, really good group. Did it turn out?
- [00:00:24.545]Huge group. Good.
- [00:00:25.784]A lot of revved up Husker fans for the game tonight
- [00:00:28.594]here in the Horseshoe and looking forward
- [00:00:30.730]to the big victory.
- [00:00:31.802]Absolutely, well you've been on the job now since May,
- [00:00:34.299]and someone who's already serving the university
- [00:00:36.401]in two different senior leadership roles.
- [00:00:38.386]You left a couple of open positions.
- [00:00:40.899]I'm sure it felt good this past week to announce a hire.
- [00:00:43.687]We sure did.
- [00:00:44.784]So I had served as the Vice Chancellor
- [00:00:47.983]for the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:00:50.200]at the university for the last six years.
- [00:00:52.505]And we were very, very pleased to
- [00:00:55.673]finish up a national recruitment effort
- [00:00:57.601]that we started in late May, early June of this year,
- [00:01:01.247]and announced the hiring of Dr. Mike Boehm
- [00:01:03.488]as the next Harlan Vice Chancellor for IANR
- [00:01:05.711]and Vice President of the university system,
- [00:01:07.772]coming in fact from the Ohio State University
- [00:01:10.344]where he has been a long career person here,
- [00:01:14.697]a native Ohioan, grew up here,
- [00:01:16.553]did his graduate work here in plant pathology
- [00:01:20.105]and the disease area of plants,
- [00:01:22.023]a recognized national leader,
- [00:01:23.765]the very top candidate in our pool
- [00:01:25.878]and we had over 40 people that looked at
- [00:01:28.095]the position from around the country.
- [00:01:30.191]So we couldn't be more excited about Mike joining us
- [00:01:32.159]in January to lead IANR and lead our ag programs forward.
- [00:01:35.112]So he'll be here in January.
- [00:01:36.634]Has somebody been kinda minding the store in your absence?
- [00:01:38.991]They sure have.
- [00:01:40.965]Ron Yoder, who has been our Associate Vice Chancellor
- [00:01:44.330]for the Institute.
- [00:01:45.817]I worked closely with Ron the last five years in his role.
- [00:01:50.485]He came about a year after I did into that position,
- [00:01:53.373]and I would credit Ron very heavily
- [00:01:55.829]with a lot of the growth the Institute has had.
- [00:01:58.415]He's led that growth and led a lot of faculty hiring
- [00:02:00.950]that we were able to do in Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:02:04.336]He was the interim Vice Chancellor when I left to become
- [00:02:08.526]the Chancellor in May of this year
- [00:02:10.742]and did a great job for us.
- [00:02:12.356]So Ron's got things ready for Dr. Boehm
- [00:02:15.995]and we're looking forward to having him join us.
- [00:02:18.931]My wife was with Mike and his family here last night.
- [00:02:21.451]I was in Chicago at another meeting,
- [00:02:23.059]and she was telling me about what an excellent hire
- [00:02:25.962]that we had made in that visit last night.
- [00:02:29.508]Fantastic!
- [00:02:30.518]Well getting a Buckeye to come to Lincoln, we love that.
- [00:02:33.014]These are two of the more iconic names in college football.
- [00:02:37.740]Huge fan bases for them, and a lot of similarities
- [00:02:40.077]between Nebraska and Ohio State.
- [00:02:41.362]Well, of course the Horseshoe is the second,
- [00:02:43.202]we think of it as the second best stadium
- [00:02:45.104]in the Big Ten, right?
- [00:02:46.267]Memorial Stadium, our home, is what we always
- [00:02:49.245]consider to be the best to play football in,
- [00:02:52.029]but a lot of similarities between Ohio State
- [00:02:54.614]and the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:57.476]Being two of a very few athletics programs
- [00:03:01.041]in the United States at the NCAA level
- [00:03:04.139]that are in the black,
- [00:03:05.898]that are actually supported at levels where
- [00:03:08.674]those athletics programs actually contribute back
- [00:03:11.281]to the university, rather than being subsidized
- [00:03:13.667]by the university. It's rare.
- [00:03:15.048]Which is very, very rare.
- [00:03:16.746]Of course the long tradition of excellence
- [00:03:18.816]of Buckeye athletics here, as you know,
- [00:03:22.490]an iconic program just like ours.
- [00:03:25.686]It should be a real good matchup here tonight
- [00:03:29.038]to see these two teams who are pretty evenly matched
- [00:03:32.016]we think, and we think we're gonna come out on the end
- [00:03:34.745]looking pretty good.
- [00:03:35.993]You know I'm sure both,
- [00:03:37.055]we obviously know in Nebraska how big of a part of
- [00:03:39.808]the state's economy the University of Nebraska is.
- [00:03:42.964]I'm sure there's similar things here for Ohio State
- [00:03:44.860]and for this area.
- [00:03:47.042]Well you know we don't always think of it this way,
- [00:03:49.973]but the university as an entity itself,
- [00:03:53.091]whether you're looking at the flagship campus in Lincoln
- [00:03:55.373]or the med center in Omaha, or the campus in Omaha,
- [00:03:58.211]or the campus in Kearney,
- [00:04:00.085]it's a huge economic driver in our state
- [00:04:02.750]just in what it contributes directly.
- [00:04:05.581]We did some work about a year ago
- [00:04:07.981]with the university system level,
- [00:04:10.324]putting an estimate on that value.
- [00:04:12.317]Currently, it's just under four billion dollars a year,
- [00:04:15.818]a big number that we contribute through the people
- [00:04:19.990]who work for the university,
- [00:04:21.661]the direct impact of the business
- [00:04:23.966]that the university does in the state,
- [00:04:25.756]tax revenues in the state,
- [00:04:27.798]and then of course there's the impact of that
- [00:04:29.277]beyond that of our graduates.
- [00:04:31.693]You've got about one in seven people
- [00:04:33.149]in the state of Nebraska who are professionally employed
- [00:04:35.871]are graduates of our university.
- [00:04:38.550]So the economic impact is very, very large.
- [00:04:41.458]And we feel very fortunate that our state,
- [00:04:45.232]Nebraska, has continued to support higher education
- [00:04:48.150]at the level that it has, that it's been a priority
- [00:04:50.444]for Nebraskans, and we are fortunate that way.
- [00:04:55.135]The support we receive from the state of Nebraska
- [00:04:57.509]helps us to be that best university
- [00:04:59.823]that we can possibly be.
- [00:05:01.642]And then of course the give back to that,
- [00:05:03.709]the return on that investment, is that
- [00:05:06.040]economic impact that we were just talking about.
- [00:05:09.841]So a big economic driver for the state,
- [00:05:12.271]and we think only getting bigger in the future.
- [00:05:14.535]We're visiting with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:05:16.103]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:05:17.302]You had a town hall meeting this week with campus leaders.
- [00:05:20.688]You called for this coming year to be the year
- [00:05:22.894]of the strategic plan.
- [00:05:24.584]What'd you mean by that?
- [00:05:25.766]Well, you know we were very fortunate these past 15,
- [00:05:29.442]16 years to be served by Harvey Perlman,
- [00:05:31.989]our previous Chancellor, in that role for a
- [00:05:34.062]long period of time for a university leader.
- [00:05:38.045]And we've taken a step back and taken a look
- [00:05:40.766]at where we are as a university and our growth ahead,
- [00:05:45.108]and we really feel like this next year,
- [00:05:47.831]the calendar year of 2017 that we have ahead of us,
- [00:05:51.510]is an important seminal year for us
- [00:05:53.893]in establishing the strategic plan for our next 10 years
- [00:05:57.571]looking out towards the quarter century mark,
- [00:05:59.872]here just nine years ahead of us now at 2025.
- [00:06:02.529]Hard to believe, but it is.
- [00:06:04.155]We remember Y2K, right? Exactly.
- [00:06:06.960]You know it seemed like it was yesterday,
- [00:06:08.914]but 2025 is just out in the forefront for us now.
- [00:06:12.719]So we're taking a hard look at how the university
- [00:06:16.622]is going to grow in our enrollment,
- [00:06:18.976]in our research capacity, in our extension capacity
- [00:06:21.716]across the state,
- [00:06:23.113]in the way that we interact with other campuses
- [00:06:25.440]in the university system and other partners
- [00:06:27.324]around the country and around the world.
- [00:06:29.669]And that next year of kind of putting that on paper,
- [00:06:33.557]of designing that strategic plan for us,
- [00:06:36.165]we thinks very important to hold us accountable
- [00:06:39.827]to our growth and our striving for more excellence
- [00:06:42.287]in the future.
- [00:06:43.148]So I have called it the year of the strategic plan.
- [00:06:46.295]With our campus leaders held a meeting with all of our
- [00:06:48.860]administrative team across the university this past week
- [00:06:52.059]on Halloween morning talking about that
- [00:06:54.506]and talking about how we'll unfold that strategic planning
- [00:06:57.266]process that we'll really delve into
- [00:06:59.240]here after the first of the year.
- [00:07:01.271]Sounds exciting.
- [00:07:02.212]Well, thank you very much.
- [00:07:03.244]Enjoy the game, and we'll be back in Lincoln next week.
- [00:07:06.026]We will be.
- [00:07:06.946]Gotta good Minnesota team coming to see us next week,
- [00:07:10.034]and we hope we'll be 8-1 at that point.
- [00:07:13.282]So good night ahead of us.
- [00:07:15.053]Go Big Red! Sounds good.
- [00:07:16.022]Ronnie Green, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:07:17.485]Chancellor with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
