- [00:00:00.000](rock music)
- [00:00:02.285]Welcome back inside our
- [00:00:03.118]Husker Sports Network studios.
- [00:00:04.645]Greg Sharpe joined by the University of Nebraska - Lincoln
- [00:00:06.635]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.346]Ronnie, one of the things sports fans
- [00:00:09.776]are hearing more about is Husker athletics using
- [00:00:13.111]data analytics for everything from game planning to
- [00:00:17.153]fitness for student athletes.
- [00:00:19.375]I guess it's no surprise then that
- [00:00:20.650]a similar kind of emphasis on leveraging data
- [00:00:23.237]is in the academic research world as well.
- [00:00:26.090]Well, that's right, Greg.
- [00:00:27.223]You know, we have more and more data
- [00:00:29.290]available to us all the time in the world we live in now.
- [00:00:32.932]So much digital information
- [00:00:34.457]and so much data that accumulates
- [00:00:37.283]and like you say, in athletics
- [00:00:39.613]the athletics performance lab that we have
- [00:00:42.137]is part of Husker athletics now.
- [00:00:44.124]The Brain, Biology, and Behavior lab it's part of,
- [00:00:47.127]you know, tied with our athletics program.
- [00:00:49.734]Tucker Zeleny needs to go into all out data analytics
- [00:00:52.162]for our athletes and our sports programs,
- [00:00:55.811]and we also are mirroring that at the University, of course
- [00:00:59.369]in the way we're educating our graduate students and
- [00:01:03.718]equipping them to work with kinda these big,
- [00:01:06.369]massive data sets of information in a variety of areas.
- [00:01:10.794]A particularly new area that we've just launched
- [00:01:14.127]a new PhD and doctoral program in
- [00:01:17.009]is in Area Complex Biosystems, which is in our Life Sciences
- [00:01:21.875]area, Biological and Life Sciences area where
- [00:01:26.007]there's huge volumes of data now accumulating
- [00:01:29.701]in those fields that are allowing us to learn
- [00:01:32.791]things we've never been able to know before
- [00:01:35.649]and be able to apply in those areas.
- [00:01:38.521]So, we're very excited about that kinda program
- [00:01:41.375]and the skills that our doctoral students
- [00:01:44.087]going through that will gain.
- [00:01:45.788]And this is only gonna increase.
- [00:01:47.789]I mean, we're just living in a technology world
- [00:01:49.632]where this is just gonna continue to go.
- [00:01:51.307]Yeah, that's right.
- [00:01:52.506]So, for example, in that arena
- [00:01:55.918]one of the big hot areas in science the last number of years
- [00:01:59.083]has been genomics where as we began to be able to see
- [00:02:03.412]down to the genetic code level of organisms,
- [00:02:05.945]people included in that, the human genome effort
- [00:02:09.227]that's now about 15 years old from when
- [00:02:12.030]the human genome was sequenced,
- [00:02:13.930]that's an example of big data, right?
- [00:02:16.316]You know, literally billions of data points on an individual
- [00:02:20.741]and being able to now mine that data
- [00:02:23.514]when you match it up with a lot of information
- [00:02:26.709]on people or on organisms, you know, animals, plants.
- [00:02:31.961]The greenhouse center that we have on campus now is part
- [00:02:35.418]of Innovation Campus and at our Beadle Center as well
- [00:02:39.080]where we're able to take very refined measurements of plants
- [00:02:43.026]and their ability to handle water stress or heat stress
- [00:02:47.155]or climate stress that is more and more
- [00:02:49.895]a part of the equation out there in the real world.
- [00:02:53.090]Those are the kinds of big data systems
- [00:02:55.292]we're talking about here.
- [00:02:57.054]So, these new programs where students are
- [00:02:59.648]not only learning the science, right, learning about
- [00:03:02.552]genomes or about biochemistry or about
- [00:03:06.827]biology, basic biology, but they're also learning
- [00:03:10.035]how you use these big data sets, right?
- [00:03:13.645]And you start to mine out things like prescribed medicine
- [00:03:16.792]or people, or like water saving technologies for how you
- [00:03:21.633]do prescription agriculture, so to speak.
- [00:03:24.508]So, those are big deals.
- [00:03:25.902]We're excited about that.
- [00:03:27.656]This program we've just started here,
- [00:03:29.571]it's in its first year.
- [00:03:31.617]We think it's transformational, it's unique
- [00:03:34.225]around the country.
- [00:03:35.760]You look at programs around the country that
- [00:03:38.344]started one like this here.
- [00:03:40.706]So, we're really looking forward to big things
- [00:03:42.491]with big impact out in the field
- [00:03:44.626]or things that will come out of that kinda training
- [00:03:47.507]with our doctoral students.
- [00:03:48.870]Well, thank you so much for sharing with us.
- [00:03:50.683]We'll visit again tomorrow for the football game.
- [00:03:52.992]We're looking forward to it.
- [00:03:54.308]Go Big Red, we're gonna be 8-1.
- [00:03:55.751]There you go.
- [00:03:56.584]Ronnie Greene, University of Nebraska champs
- [00:03:58.302]are with us here between sets and Husker volleyball.
- [00:04:01.059]John Boehner will have more coming up next.
