- [00:00:00.278]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:02.155]Khan Academy.
- [00:00:03.415](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.157]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls
- [00:00:18.331]and today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:20.084]we're gonna look at Khan Academy.
- [00:00:21.767]So, with the end of the semester coming around
- [00:00:23.903]and summer break on the horizon
- [00:00:26.178]I like to try and find fun apps
- [00:00:28.468]that parents can use with their students over the summer
- [00:00:31.137]just to keep their skills sharp
- [00:00:32.495]and maybe get a little bit of a head-start
- [00:00:34.402]moving into the school year.
- [00:00:36.027]Or in my case, find stuff to do in the car
- [00:00:39.162]when mom and dad decide that it's time to take a road trip.
- [00:00:42.181]So, Khan Academy is sort of a one-stop shop
- [00:00:45.149]for educational games and problems
- [00:00:49.998]and ways to keep your students engaged
- [00:00:52.976]and maybe a little more quiet in the backseat of the car.
- [00:00:56.947]And as with most of my favorite apps
- [00:00:58.946]you can log in with your Google account.
- [00:01:02.544]So we'll go ahead and log in.
- [00:01:08.377]And the other cool thing about Khan Academy
- [00:01:10.061]is that it's multiple age levels.
- [00:01:12.635]So you can have your younger children
- [00:01:15.796]working on stuff that's age appropriate
- [00:01:17.401]all the way through to your high school students
- [00:01:19.721]who maybe they're just using that summer
- [00:01:21.413]to get ready to take the SATs in the fall.
- [00:01:25.539]So we're gonna select an avatar
- [00:01:27.918]which for your younger students
- [00:01:29.068]might be more interesting than for your older students.
- [00:01:33.023]But we're gonna take this little toothy guy.
- [00:01:37.055]"Finish watching a computer program talk-through."
- [00:01:39.241]Oh, I can't choose him.
- [00:01:46.789]How about the red guy?
- [00:01:49.895]Alright, so I've selected my avatar.
- [00:01:54.140]Now, as you can see it breaks it down by subject.
- [00:01:57.524]And then with math, because there's a heavy focus on math
- [00:02:00.493]it breaks it down by subject as well as grade level.
- [00:02:05.523]We're gonna go ahead and look at some of the science
- [00:02:08.532]and stuff because I know we've been talking a lot
- [00:02:10.403]about science apps here recently.
- [00:02:14.296]Let's look at astronomy.
- [00:02:20.591]Scale of the universe, stars, black holes, and galaxies.
- [00:02:24.557]I'm gonna go with that
- [00:02:25.390]because the one thing my family did a lot
- [00:02:26.759]when we were younger
- [00:02:27.984]was go camping.
- [00:02:29.745]So if I'm looking out there
- [00:02:30.916]and we're out in the mountains
- [00:02:31.950]where there's a bunch of sky
- [00:02:33.785]it might be kinda interesting to engage your kids
- [00:02:35.510]in conversation about stars and galaxies and black holes
- [00:02:38.191]when they can see it out there.
- [00:02:40.173]So, again let's go ahead and say the birth of stars.
- [00:02:45.717]And there's a short video.
- [00:02:47.268]So you'd go ahead and watch the video.
- [00:02:52.346]Then, there are questions.
- [00:02:54.816]And what's interesting is you can see
- [00:02:57.142]questions and responses from other people.
- [00:03:01.289]You can also ask questions.
- [00:03:02.590]So if you have a question based on the reading
- [00:03:04.498]you can submit it and people can respond.
- [00:03:07.414]For those of you that are teachers
- [00:03:08.628]and use Google Classroom
- [00:03:10.282]you can link this to your Google Classroom.
- [00:03:12.323]So again, it's a great resource
- [00:03:14.000]and it ties into a tool that you're probably
- [00:03:15.658]already using in your classrooms.
- [00:03:19.840]There's also closed captioning.
- [00:03:21.531]So your students can read along.
- [00:03:26.130]And...
- [00:03:30.401]Okay so again it's a list of different topics
- [00:03:33.441]and they're all gonna have little videos.
- [00:03:36.074]And then there are challenges.
- [00:03:39.031]So we're gonna see what this one is.
- [00:03:42.298]"Click on spin off tabs below to see winning entries."
- [00:03:52.429]I'm actually not sure what this is, we'll find out.
- [00:03:54.834]So this looks like some sort of coding activity
- [00:03:58.791]that you do based on what you learned
- [00:04:04.428]in the galaxies.
- [00:04:07.403]So it gives you some JavaScript, okay.
- [00:04:09.527]So this could be something
- [00:04:10.503]that you could have your younger students, younger kids
- [00:04:13.466]partner with the older kids
- [00:04:14.793]and get some coding experience
- [00:04:16.735]while you learn some science.
- [00:04:18.613]So again, it's crossing some disciplinary boundaries there
- [00:04:20.977]which again, is always something I'm a huge fan of
- [00:04:24.267]when talking about apps for students to use.
- [00:04:29.570]So you also have a profile page
- [00:04:31.397]that sets up and sort of keeps track of what you do.
- [00:04:36.107]You can earn badges
- [00:04:37.572]which in my experience, tend to me more appealing
- [00:04:40.377]for younger students than older students.
- [00:04:43.800]But if we go back to subjects
- [00:04:45.411]let's go ahead and let's look at some math.
- [00:04:47.877]So I've been doing some statistics recently
- [00:04:50.845]so we'll go ahead and see what they have
- [00:04:52.015]as far as statistics.
- [00:04:59.200]And we'll look at
- [00:05:02.522]significance testing, woohoo!
- [00:05:07.821]So again, it gives a brief overview
- [00:05:09.822]of what's gonna be covered.
- [00:05:14.368]And a series of videos
- [00:05:18.197]and then some practice
- [00:05:20.708]and then some more videos.
- [00:05:22.272]So let's go ahead and take a look at what
- [00:05:24.437]the practice looks like.
- [00:05:31.101]"An alien empire is considering taking over planet Earth
- [00:05:34.128]"But they will only do so if the population
- [00:05:35.611]"Of rebellious humans is less than 10%.
- [00:05:38.504]"They abduct a random sample of 100 humans
- [00:05:40.788]"Perform special psychological tests
- [00:05:42.674]"And found that 20% of the sample are rebellious.
- [00:05:46.490]"Let's test the hypothesis that the actual percentage
- [00:05:48.842]"Of rebellious humans is 10%."
- [00:05:51.529]So again, this would be great for younger students
- [00:05:54.720]because the example is all about aliens
- [00:05:56.461]invading the Earth
- [00:05:58.141]and last summer one of the blockbuster hits
- [00:06:00.058]was an alien movie.
- [00:06:01.214]So, it's probably still something
- [00:06:03.409]that students will remember.
- [00:06:06.111]So then once they read through the problem
- [00:06:09.538]there's a series of questions that they answer
- [00:06:12.531]and there's a hint at the bottom.
- [00:06:14.248]So if you're stuck, they can go back
- [00:06:16.044]and watch the video to refresh their memory
- [00:06:18.210]or use a hint.
- [00:06:20.851]So what I like about this
- [00:06:21.743]is it's something they can do on their own
- [00:06:23.634]but they can also engage with other people.
- [00:06:26.292]So if you had multiple kids in the backseat
- [00:06:29.063]they can sort of play off each other
- [00:06:31.853]and they can compete for different badges
- [00:06:34.751]and if they get bored with one subject
- [00:06:36.561]they can move onto something else.
- [00:06:38.303]And so it's self directed
- [00:06:39.698]which I think for summer learning
- [00:06:41.083]experience for students is gonna be super important
- [00:06:43.698]to keep them engaged and interested as they move on.
- [00:06:47.640]So it covers all different types of science and engineering.
- [00:06:52.189]Computing, there's some history.
- [00:06:54.703]Art history, so if things that through in your travels
- [00:06:58.151]or going somewhere like an art museum
- [00:07:01.298]you could have your students do some pre-learning
- [00:07:04.493]or maybe go back and the museum piqued their interest
- [00:07:07.725]and they could go look it up afterwards.
- [00:07:09.816]But different ways where you can sort of tie
- [00:07:11.852]some of what they're learning
- [00:07:13.098]into the experiences they're having
- [00:07:14.543]while on vacation
- [00:07:16.257]which keeps things fresh, interesting, and relevant.
- [00:07:19.011]So that's just a very brief overview of Khan Academy.
- [00:07:21.431]It's a very exhaustive list of subjects
- [00:07:25.865]and things to look at
- [00:07:27.092]that I think will be an engaging way
- [00:07:29.082]to keep your students learning over the summer.
- [00:07:31.059]Thanks, see ya.
- [00:07:32.890](upbeat music)
