- [00:00:02.001]Greg Sharpe back on Countdown to Kickoff
- [00:00:03.914]headed to a 6:10 kick tonight here at Camp Randall.
- [00:00:06.517]Huskers and Badgers in what will be a key game
- [00:00:09.439]in the Big 10 West Division battle.
- [00:00:12.733]We are now joined by University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:15.124]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:16.558]Good to see you. Welcome to Camp Randall.
- [00:00:18.364]Great to be here, Greg.
- [00:00:19.197]It's one of the oldest stadiums in America.
- [00:00:21.073]Yeah, it is. Kinda looks that way.
- [00:00:22.403]It's a great stadium.
- [00:00:23.677]We were here several years ago
- [00:00:25.111]when we first went in the Big 10
- [00:00:26.492]for that very first Big 10 Conference game.
- [00:00:29.042]You might remember that year, That's right.
- [00:00:31.466]experienced it that year
- [00:00:32.864]and looking forward to a great game tonight.
- [00:00:35.095]Well, here we are at the end of October.
- [00:00:37.911]It's been a heck of a fall
- [00:00:38.867]for Husker Athletics, hasn't it?
- [00:00:40.833]Well, you know, if you had asked us
- [00:00:43.171]that we would be in the position that we're in
- [00:00:45.402]at the beginning of the season,
- [00:00:46.306]I'd probably said, "Sure." (chuckles)
- [00:00:47.739]"We're gonna be."
- [00:00:49.173]But it's a great place to be
- [00:00:50.546]with an undefeated football team,
- [00:00:52.087]number-one-ranked-in-the-country volleyball team
- [00:00:54.487]with our women,
- [00:00:55.646]our soccer team doing very well
- [00:00:57.930]within the Big 10 and nationally, as well.
- [00:01:00.003]So pretty excited about where we are
- [00:01:03.137]and pretty excited about what the future lies yet ahead.
- [00:01:07.408]The Alumni Association had an event downtown last night,
- [00:01:09.968]of course, they had the volleyball match
- [00:01:11.509]up on there, a lot of cheering,
- [00:01:12.731]hooting, and hollering as Nebraska beat Illinois
- [00:01:14.686]to stay at the top of the heap of the Big 10 Conference.
- [00:01:18.457]I'm sure you maybe didn't imagine a couple months ago
- [00:01:21.168]we'd have this kind of fall,
- [00:01:22.230]but it sure is fun.
- [00:01:23.133]Oh, it sure is fun.
- [00:01:24.833]And to see the ladies last night
- [00:01:26.957]knock off Illinois for the second time this year,
- [00:01:29.881]and to now be clearly in the lead in the Big 10,
- [00:01:32.801]not only number one in the country,
- [00:01:34.342]but have the sole lead on the Conference as well
- [00:01:37.105]with Penn State's game last night
- [00:01:40.239]from Wisconsin here.
- [00:01:42.858]We played last weekend in Lincoln.
- [00:01:45.339]So a great place to be and I think
- [00:01:47.122]that's a reflection of the talent of the students we have,
- [00:01:51.424]it's a reflection of the talent of our coaches
- [00:01:53.443]and our athletic staff to be able to see
- [00:01:56.047]this kind of success that we're experiencing this fall.
- [00:01:58.172]Looking forward to winter, coming ahead.
- [00:02:01.930]Our wrestling team's doing a little bit of work right now,
- [00:02:04.373]and our men's and women's basketball teams gearing up
- [00:02:07.028]for their seasons that are just around the corner here now.
- [00:02:10.747]Just a great place to be in Husker Athletics right now.
- [00:02:13.562]Well, so much attention, Chancellor,
- [00:02:15.713]is always focused on the performance on the field,
- [00:02:17.733]but I know at Nebraska we're really proud
- [00:02:19.805]of what happens in the classroom and off the field
- [00:02:21.770]for the academic part for being a student athlete.
- [00:02:24.586]Well, absolutely, and I've been saying a lot
- [00:02:26.870]the last several months that there is no place
- [00:02:29.579]to be a student athlete like Nebraska in the country.
- [00:02:33.883]Our very proud record that we hold
- [00:02:36.963]in Academic All-Americans is real at Nebraska,
- [00:02:40.151]almost 75, better than any other school in the country.
- [00:02:43.491]There's a little one down the road here
- [00:02:44.713]from Madison called Notre Dame
- [00:02:47.674]that has that second place behind us.
- [00:02:50.496]We're very proud of the fact of what we do
- [00:02:54.959]on the field, in the arena, on the court,
- [00:02:57.775]but we certainly are very proud
- [00:02:58.944]of what these students do as part
- [00:03:00.590]of the academic life on our campus
- [00:03:02.982]and the support that Husker Athletics puts behind them
- [00:03:06.861]for their education and their furtherance
- [00:03:08.952]in life, post-competition.
- [00:03:11.427]We come up here every other year for football,
- [00:03:13.235]and I'm always struck by the similarities
- [00:03:15.094]between Lincoln and Madison,
- [00:03:16.315]both teams the color red's their primary color
- [00:03:18.960]but there's a lot of things that are a lot alike,
- [00:03:20.193]aren't there?
- [00:03:21.026]Well, we're really pleased that they're not saying
- [00:03:22.432]"Go Big Red" like we were having
- [00:03:24.019]in Bloomington the other week. Indiana!
- [00:03:25.825]But Madison is a great college town,
- [00:03:28.534]a great state capital of course,
- [00:03:30.340]similar in so many ways to Lincoln,
- [00:03:33.050]similar in size, about a quarter of a million people
- [00:03:35.706]here in the Madison metro area,
- [00:03:37.406]a little bit more for us in Lincoln,
- [00:03:38.948]but close in size.
- [00:03:40.700]We both kinda border on the state government home
- [00:03:44.329]for our state,
- [00:03:45.162]so we look down the mall at the Capitol
- [00:03:47.712]from City Campus in Lincoln
- [00:03:49.413]and they're very similar here being next door
- [00:03:51.697]to the leadership of their state government.
- [00:03:54.301]Two great flagship land-grant universities
- [00:03:57.002]for our states,
- [00:03:58.261]a very rich tradition here at Wisconsin.
- [00:04:00.971]It's one of the leading land-grant universities
- [00:04:02.876]in the country.
- [00:04:04.628]Almost every similarity you can think of,
- [00:04:08.428]a great love of college football also.
- [00:04:10.526]We have the great tradition of Wisconsin football
- [00:04:12.916]and we have that little tie called Barry Alvarez
- [00:04:16.730]to Nebraska as well.
- [00:04:20.017]Ronnie Green, UNL Chancellor, with us here
- [00:04:21.930]on pregame coverage tonight.
- [00:04:23.630]Huskers and Badgers getting ready
- [00:04:24.905]for a 6:10 kickoff here tonight.
- [00:04:27.933]Well, next week is Halloween,
- [00:04:29.262]but for your Office of Research and Economic Development
- [00:04:32.290]there's an even bigger event that's taking place.
- [00:04:35.132]Can you tell us something about that?
- [00:04:37.469]It sure is, Greg.
- [00:04:38.532]We have our annual Research Fair coming up
- [00:04:40.975]that our Office of Research and Economic Development
- [00:04:43.047]puts on every year.
- [00:04:45.386]Both pushing our researchers on campus,
- [00:04:47.934]our faculty and their research
- [00:04:49.576]and their creative activity work,
- [00:04:51.170]and thinking about the future of that work
- [00:04:53.135]and helping to equip them,
- [00:04:55.100]but also recognizing their work
- [00:04:56.960]and what they've been able to accomplish
- [00:04:58.660]in the last year.
- [00:04:59.988]A lot of sessions going on on November 1st and 2nd,
- [00:05:03.548]just a few days from now, next week.
- [00:05:06.310]Looking forward to a real panel discussion
- [00:05:08.435]in our research group led by a number
- [00:05:11.146]of our key faculty, leading faculty.
- [00:05:14.014]Shane Farritor in Engineering
- [00:05:15.642]and Angie Pannier in Engineering.
- [00:05:17.926]Bob Powers from Chemistry,
- [00:05:19.362]Melanie Simpson from Biochemistry
- [00:05:21.114]and Ben Terry from Mechanical Engineering,
- [00:05:23.930]talking about the future of research in those fields
- [00:05:27.702]and what we're doing as well at Nebraska.
- [00:05:31.369]This'll be a really special year
- [00:05:33.546]in our Research Fair as well,
- [00:05:35.700]where the initiator of that research fair was Prem Paul,
- [00:05:39.905]who we've talked about earlier
- [00:05:41.604]in the season this year,
- [00:05:43.092]who we lost to cancer back in September,
- [00:05:46.165]and so it'll be a special time
- [00:05:47.281]for our campus community around Prem as well,
- [00:05:50.992]and honoring his legacy and the work that he did.
- [00:05:54.180]And then lastly, we've had several big announcements
- [00:05:57.846]the last few weeks
- [00:05:59.873]talking about important work that's going on
- [00:06:03.045]with the University of Nebraska Medical Center
- [00:06:05.011]in Omaha, our sister research campus there to UNL.
- [00:06:09.632]They announced a big $20 million grant this past week
- [00:06:12.926]that UNMC is leading and Melanie Simpson,
- [00:06:16.061]who I mentioned just a minute ago
- [00:06:17.389]from our Biochemistry Department,
- [00:06:18.954]is serving as the Nebraska lead, the state lead,
- [00:06:21.822]for that project as the UNL participation in it,
- [00:06:25.594]working on early career development
- [00:06:27.454]in medical research.
- [00:06:29.526]Medical researchers, a very exciting development for them.
- [00:06:32.232]I saw an announcement just today at UNMC
- [00:06:35.154]about a $20 million grant that they received
- [00:06:38.181]for an Ebola training center there
- [00:06:40.678]as part of their development in the future.
- [00:06:43.175]That building relationship between UNMC and UNL
- [00:06:47.532]for the furtherance of the state,
- [00:06:49.285]furtherance of our mission and research
- [00:06:50.878]will also be a highlight
- [00:06:52.313]of the Research Fair this week.
- [00:06:54.633]We chat with Hank Bounds a lot.
- [00:06:56.226]He always talks about partnerships
- [00:06:57.767]and he wants partnerships
- [00:06:58.829]between the institutions in the state,
- [00:07:00.370]and I think you have that.
- [00:07:01.273]Yeah, yeah, absolutely,
- [00:07:02.389]and especially on the research side.
- [00:07:04.726]From a UNMC perspective,
- [00:07:07.649]where they're training our future physicians,
- [00:07:09.719]they're training our future pharmacists,
- [00:07:11.208]our future nurses, future biomedical researchers
- [00:07:15.510]through their work.
- [00:07:16.343]And guess where many of those people come from?
- [00:07:19.017]They come from UNL and the state's flagship
- [00:07:21.727]and land-grant university where most
- [00:07:24.064]of those students start their career and education.
- [00:07:26.295]So lots of great partnerships
- [00:07:28.101]that we're developing further.
- [00:07:29.588]We couldn't be more excited about the Research Fair
- [00:07:31.448]coming up this week.
- [00:07:32.351]Well, very good.
- [00:07:33.184]Good to see you. Enjoy the game.
- [00:07:34.017]Let's keep this thing rolling.
- [00:07:35.645]Absolutely. All right?
- [00:07:36.548]Go Big Red.
- [00:07:37.381]Awesome. Ronnie Green with us here
- [00:07:39.047]on our Countdown to Kickoff show.
- [00:07:40.085]When we come back Matt Coatney will have our Big 10 Blitz.
- [00:07:42.762]That's straight ahead.
