- [00:00:02.936]Welcome back.
- [00:00:03.769]Husker volleyball here on the Husker Sports Network.
- [00:00:05.162]Greg Sharpe, back in our studios, joined by
- [00:00:06.680]the University of Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:10.247]Ronnie, we hear all the time
- [00:00:11.108]when we talk about Husker athletics,
- [00:00:12.698]about the great support they have
- [00:00:14.103]academically and for life skills,
- [00:00:16.150]what about for the rest of the campus,
- [00:00:17.579]are those type of things available as well?
- [00:00:19.869]Oh, we certainly are proud of our student athletes
- [00:00:21.722]and the life skills and student success
- [00:00:24.071]aspects of Husker athletics,
- [00:00:25.994]that really lead the nation in that regard.
- [00:00:29.823]We're very proud of that on the campus generally
- [00:00:32.289]as well with our student population.
- [00:00:34.337]Over 4,000 students participate every year
- [00:00:38.218]in scholarship retention programs at the university
- [00:00:41.143]that's helping them to be able to attend the university
- [00:00:44.323]and to receive the benefits of higher education.
- [00:00:47.376]And we're particularly proud
- [00:00:48.993]of one area that we've developed over the last decade
- [00:00:54.350]that is reaching out to underrepresented students
- [00:00:57.929]in our state who have more hurdles to jump
- [00:01:00.836]to be able to get to a higher education opportunity
- [00:01:04.221]through the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy.
- [00:01:06.994]We started it 10 years ago.
- [00:01:08.328]It was led in many ways by the leadership
- [00:01:11.564]of our Admissions Director, Amber Williams, on campus.
- [00:01:17.057]It started in two high schools.
- [00:01:18.933]In Grand Island and in Omaha,
- [00:01:20.752]Omaha North and at Grand Island Senior High,
- [00:01:24.292]where we have had a program
- [00:01:26.185]starting with eighth graders
- [00:01:28.379]who commit to this program to prepare them
- [00:01:31.592]for going to college and for
- [00:01:33.659]a four year college education.
- [00:01:36.351]Have to maintain academic standards
- [00:01:38.298]while they're doing that.
- [00:01:39.676]And then they qualify for scholarship opportunities
- [00:01:42.349]to come to the university at the end of that time
- [00:01:45.511]when they graduate from high school.
- [00:01:47.907]Very proud of that.
- [00:01:49.233]It's been a very successful program for us.
- [00:01:51.496]We've seen in the first six years
- [00:01:53.013]of those students who have come to the university,
- [00:01:56.503]that our retention of those students is higher
- [00:01:59.183]by a significant amount, about 4% higher retention rate
- [00:02:02.896]than not having had this kind of opportunity.
- [00:02:05.806]So, very proud of that.
- [00:02:08.032]And looking forward to its future.
- [00:02:10.151]You made an announcement earlier this week
- [00:02:12.007]regarded to the Sherwood Foundation,
- [00:02:13.797]it's a great friend of the university.
- [00:02:15.269]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:02:16.783]Well, we are very pleased.
- [00:02:18.624]Now 10 years into the College Prep Academy,
- [00:02:21.993]to be expanding it.
- [00:02:23.123]So we started it in these two significant
- [00:02:25.377]high schools in the state.
- [00:02:27.660]And we're now expanding it in Omaha
- [00:02:30.538]and also in Winnebago.
- [00:02:32.069]We're going to Omaha South and expanding it
- [00:02:34.701]into the area there that has a high number
- [00:02:39.402]of Hispanic students in the Omaha area.
- [00:02:42.889]And then into the Ho-Chunk Tribe in northeast Nebraska.
- [00:02:47.985]And the Winnebago School there is now a new site
- [00:02:50.724]of our College Prep Academy.
- [00:02:52.629]So now we have Omaha North
- [00:02:54.630]and Grand Island Senior High,
- [00:02:55.987]and Omaha South, and Winnebago.
- [00:02:58.623]We're excited about that opportunity,
- [00:03:00.908]supported through the Sherwood Foundation.
- [00:03:03.529]They've been the sponsor and donor
- [00:03:06.689]that has supported these scholarships
- [00:03:09.028]for students coming out of the College Prep Academy for us.
- [00:03:13.248]So expanding that access, expanding the opportunity,
- [00:03:16.601]that we think is significant for the state
- [00:03:18.902]and we really appreciate the support
- [00:03:20.265]of the Sherwood Foundation in helping us to do that.
- [00:03:22.861]Basically doubles the size of the program.
- [00:03:24.522]Great information and good to know.
- [00:03:27.087]Thank you for sharing with us, have a great week.
- [00:03:28.674]Well, we're looking forward to a good rest
- [00:03:29.890]of the game, go Big Red.
- [00:03:31.546]Ronnie Green with us here between sets.
- [00:03:33.468]John Baylor has more action
- [00:03:35.185]in Husker volleyball, coming up next.
