- [00:00:01.913]Greg Sharp back at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
- [00:00:04.833]On the campus of Indiana University getting ready
- [00:00:06.808]for the Huskers game against the Hoosiers.
- [00:00:08.410]First time these two teams have matched up
- [00:00:10.569]since Nebraska joined the Big Ten six years ago.
- [00:00:13.761]I'll have a lot more about that in our game open
- [00:00:15.559]coming up here in a few minutes.
- [00:00:17.068]We are delighted now to be joined
- [00:00:18.146]by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's chancellor.
- [00:00:20.908]Ronnie Green, you've been here
- [00:00:22.748]in the state for over 24 hours.
- [00:00:24.525]I guess you came with some of the suite owners
- [00:00:26.927]and some of those folks who are
- [00:00:27.967]great friends of the University.
- [00:00:28.936]Yeah, we have a game every year that Husker athletics
- [00:00:33.097]brings all of our supporters who have suites
- [00:00:35.688]in Memorial Stadium, in our Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:37.956]That's right.
- [00:00:38.789]And haul 'em up to an away game.
- [00:00:41.709]They always try to pick one where they haven't been before
- [00:00:44.486]or it might be a new and unique experience
- [00:00:46.752]for our supporters.
- [00:00:48.317]Since we haven't been here since 1978
- [00:00:50.299]they thought that was pretty good option
- [00:00:52.928]to come to Bloomington.
- [00:00:54.116]Came to Indianapolis yesterday and spent the day
- [00:00:57.245]with the group running around the Brickyard.
- [00:00:59.242]Alright.
- [00:01:00.164]Taking some 120 mile an hour car rides for folks
- [00:01:03.108]that wanted to do that and had a good evening
- [00:01:05.107]in Indianapolis. Did you do that?
- [00:01:06.276]My wife did.
- [00:01:07.254]You know Husker Jane decided that she
- [00:01:09.393]kinda liked that kind of thing.
- [00:01:11.156]So I was on the phone trying to hire some people
- [00:01:13.375]and she was in the car riding around.
- [00:01:15.720]She survived it, right?
- [00:01:16.557]Didn't get sick?
- [00:01:17.999]She did say that she didn't think she needed
- [00:01:19.764]to do it again.
- [00:01:21.756]She enjoyed it but you know 120,
- [00:01:23.828]she hit it and she said I think I've done that
- [00:01:26.587]and I've fulfilled my dream.
- [00:01:28.086]Good.
- [00:01:28.919]Well I know it's a nice thing to show back to your
- [00:01:31.870]boosters and people who are great friends of the program.
- [00:01:33.952]It's fun to be able to spend some time with them.
- [00:01:35.145]Yeah, great group of people
- [00:01:36.715]and they're going to enjoy a great game
- [00:01:38.182]we hope this afternoon.
- [00:01:39.292]Speaking of a great group of people,
- [00:01:40.714]you have been fortunate to have some
- [00:01:42.743]in terrific national type speakers come on
- [00:01:45.413]to the UNL campus in recent weeks.
- [00:01:46.997]It's one of the great things about being
- [00:01:48.180]around a University community
- [00:01:49.374]is to be able to go out and bring in people to come
- [00:01:51.486]and make presentations to your students.
- [00:01:53.522]Yeah, just in this last
- [00:01:56.256]ten days, two week period we've had three big speakers
- [00:01:59.525]on our campus in a variety of areas.
- [00:02:02.265]The E.N. Thompson forum series that is kind of a mainstay
- [00:02:06.360]on our campus that has different themes every year.
- [00:02:09.669]And we bring in internationally known speakers
- [00:02:12.018]to the campus.
- [00:02:12.851]I had David Brooks here just recently.
- [00:02:15.037]A conservative columnist,
- [00:02:16.212]very well known writer in the political world.
- [00:02:19.760]He came and talked to us about
- [00:02:22.664]kind of the reality of politics today
- [00:02:25.749]and had great things to say to us.
- [00:02:28.827]Very pleased to have David as part of the E.N. Thompson
- [00:02:31.338]forum series this year.
- [00:02:33.221]Then this past week we had a couple big speakers
- [00:02:36.267]on our campus as well.
- [00:02:38.463]We had Mark Lynas who has been a leader
- [00:02:42.137]in the Greenpeace movement throughout his life.
- [00:02:45.541]Who for a long time was kinda adamantly opposed
- [00:02:49.057]to genetic modification of crops,
- [00:02:51.204]which are important as we know to Nebraska certainly,
- [00:02:55.338]but changed his mind about that three years ago
- [00:02:58.032]and took a reversal and said he thought that the use
- [00:03:00.641]of that kind of technology is really important
- [00:03:03.206]for the future of the world and that science was behind it.
- [00:03:06.868]So he came and talked in one of our lecture series
- [00:03:09.496]called the Heueremman Lectures
- [00:03:10.998]at our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources this past week.
- [00:03:14.825]Then just I guess on Thursday night we had Donna Brazile
- [00:03:19.626]with us on campus.
- [00:03:21.157]Donna is currently serving as the interim Chair
- [00:03:23.005]of the Democratic National Committee,
- [00:03:25.786]has been a long time known columnist
- [00:03:28.142]and person in the media world especially
- [00:03:31.550]in and around politics.
- [00:03:33.367]She was part of our Hearst series
- [00:03:34.960]that the College of Journalism and Mass Communications
- [00:03:37.978]sponsors every year.
- [00:03:40.328]She was here the same night Brad Paisley was
- [00:03:42.159]so how about that you know?
- [00:03:43.470]To have Donna on one side of the campus
- [00:03:45.717]and Brad Paisley over with about 7,000
- [00:03:47.608]of our students and supporters in front of Memorial Stadium.
- [00:03:50.618]That's pretty good.
- [00:03:51.455]That's pretty cool.
- [00:03:52.296]Now when you bring these speakers on campus
- [00:03:54.371]can anybody go or is there an admission charge
- [00:03:56.915]for these type of things?
- [00:03:58.074]No, they're open.
- [00:03:59.759]Most of the time these lectures are open
- [00:04:02.359]to our students to the community on campus
- [00:04:05.689]as well as the general public.
- [00:04:07.862]The E.N. Thompson forum's always held
- [00:04:09.571]at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts.
- [00:04:11.710]It housed about 2,200 people in that venue
- [00:04:14.053]and oftentimes it's packed.
- [00:04:16.316]As it was for the David Brooks event here recently.
- [00:04:20.489]And that's open to the public.
- [00:04:21.598]You know they can get tickets and free access to
- [00:04:24.755]those kinds of events.
- [00:04:25.896]The Heueremman lectures, same way.
- [00:04:27.718]The Hearst lecture the same way.
- [00:04:29.451]These are open events for the campus
- [00:04:31.442]and for the general community at-large.
- [00:04:33.134]Great.
- [00:04:33.967]Visiting with Nebraska- Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:04:36.849]here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:04:38.546]Some exciting news for your law school as well
- [00:04:41.154]here in recent weeks and tell everybody about that.
- [00:04:44.502]Well you know we've been very proud of our law school
- [00:04:47.762]for a long time.
- [00:04:48.595]Our college of law is the only public college of law
- [00:04:52.764]in our state.
- [00:04:53.625]Creighton University being the other private college of law.
- [00:04:58.103]The last three years we've been very pleased
- [00:05:01.301]that the National Jurist magazine,
- [00:05:04.192]a mainstay in that law environment,
- [00:05:06.737]has ranked our college of law.
- [00:05:08.666]I think two years ago they were number two
- [00:05:10.569]and last year they were number one,
- [00:05:11.969]and then just recently announced this past week
- [00:05:14.068]again they're number one in 2016
- [00:05:16.671]as the best value college of law in the country.
- [00:05:20.919]That reflects high bar passage rates,
- [00:05:24.469]placement of graduates in law firms
- [00:05:27.109]and getting them into their
- [00:05:28.505]professional career post-graduation,
- [00:05:31.907]how much it cost to attend our law school,
- [00:05:34.191]which is amongst the most competitive in the United States,
- [00:05:37.766]competitiveness of getting into the law school.
- [00:05:40.221]All of those things combined to reflect on a really
- [00:05:43.532]high value college of law that we're blessed
- [00:05:46.150]to have at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:05:47.890]I've got a little personal touch in that currently
- [00:05:49.690]because our second oldest child is a third year law,
- [00:05:53.490]or 3L as they call them, in UNL's college of law.
- [00:05:57.100]So I'm experiencing that as a citizen and a consumer
- [00:06:02.703]seeing one our children graduate this coming year
- [00:06:05.623]from our college of law.
- [00:06:06.757]Very exciting and congratulations to all
- [00:06:08.303]that were involved in that.
- [00:06:09.604]I want to ask you about your interim
- [00:06:11.051]Associate Vice-Chancellor for academic affairs Judy Walker.
- [00:06:13.721]She's a professor of mathematics at UNL.
- [00:06:16.567]She has an interesting project going on right now to try to,
- [00:06:19.219]I guess what get more women involved in mathematics?
- [00:06:21.619]Yeah, so Judy is the leader of a project
- [00:06:25.003]that we just received word on has been funded
- [00:06:27.094]by the National Science Foundation.
- [00:06:29.163]There are a number of these around the country
- [00:06:30.892]but we're very pleased to be one of
- [00:06:32.460]those highly selected projects that's focused on
- [00:06:36.340]encouraging more women nationally
- [00:06:39.163]to go into the field of mathematics.
- [00:06:40.806]Judy's been a long time leader as a woman herself
- [00:06:44.141]in the field and as the leader of our math department
- [00:06:47.386]that's in the top end of math departments nationally.
- [00:06:50.939]Very pleased about that.
- [00:06:52.287]Our math department for a long time
- [00:06:54.402]has been very heavily invested in public K-12 math education
- [00:07:00.592]and encouraging and elevating math education nationally.
- [00:07:05.418]So this is another gem in their crown
- [00:07:07.143]to now be leading this kind of nationally funded
- [00:07:09.708]effort around women to encourage more than,
- [00:07:12.126]it's currently about a quarter of the people
- [00:07:14.741]that are involved in math education are women,
- [00:07:17.418]three-fourths are men.
- [00:07:19.366]So we are trying to change that and get some gender equity
- [00:07:22.647]in the math field.
- [00:07:24.640]I'm very proud of Judy leading that effort.
- [00:07:26.330]Very good.
- [00:07:27.163]You mentioned the Brad Paisley concert.
- [00:07:28.327]That was fun.
- [00:07:29.160]I was out there for that.
- [00:07:29.993]That was a really neat thing.
- [00:07:30.826]I'm glad that that was brought to Lincoln.
- [00:07:32.026]It's another nice little caveat
- [00:07:33.417]for the students to go enjoy.
- [00:07:34.637]Yeah, we were co-sponsoring that
- [00:07:37.277]with our marketing group.
- [00:07:40.612]And to have the opportunity
- [00:07:42.944]on a night of a away game weekend
- [00:07:46.333]giving our students a way to plug into Husker athletics.
- [00:07:50.023]Brad Paisley has done a number of these concerts
- [00:07:52.332]around the country.
- [00:07:53.302]He's a big collegiate athletics fan himself.
- [00:07:56.469]Paid a tribute to Sam Folks during the concert
- [00:07:59.263]that was very touching.
- [00:08:02.031]To have it there kinda in that setting,
- [00:08:03.918]they had it just to the north of the stadium
- [00:08:07.143]where the main entrance to the athletics department is.
- [00:08:10.508]In that arena and with Memorial Stadium,
- [00:08:14.396]Brad was if you can picture it,
- [00:08:16.152]he was staged facing south
- [00:08:18.193]at the end of that north parking lot
- [00:08:20.580]full of students up to the entrance
- [00:08:23.586]to the athletics department with Memorial Stadium
- [00:08:26.542]in the backdrop.
- [00:08:27.378]It's a great picture.
- [00:08:28.211]The letters of Nebraska through the windows
- [00:08:30.870]of the athletic offices.
- [00:08:32.964]It was a really cool scene to see it.
- [00:08:35.152]Okay.
- [00:08:35.985]Always appreciate you taking time to talk to us.
- [00:08:37.698]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:08:38.556]We'll see you back in Lincoln next week.
- [00:08:39.884]You bet.
- [00:08:40.717]Go Big Red, 6-0.
- [00:08:41.550]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:08:43.823]Matt Coatney has the Big Ten blitz coming up next.
