- [00:00:02.366]Welcome back.
- [00:00:03.199]Count down to kickoff here on the Husker Sports Network.
- [00:00:04.854]Today the Big Red take on the Wyoming Cowboys.
- [00:00:06.895]And we're going to be joined each and every week
- [00:00:08.607]during the football season
- [00:00:09.665]by Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.659]Just back from California.
- [00:00:12.919]You had quite a week, I guess.
- [00:00:14.384]Yeah, we did.
- [00:00:15.769]I've had a chance to meet a number of our alums
- [00:00:18.333]and supporters out in the Bay area
- [00:00:20.366]and then the LA area the last three days.
- [00:00:22.526]Just got home a couple days ago, on Thursday night.
- [00:00:25.542]I had a really good trip seeing Huskers in California.
- [00:00:29.248]Well great.
- [00:00:30.081]We're glad you were able to travel safe and get back.
- [00:00:31.653]Also, this week, some terrific news for the university
- [00:00:34.461]and for UNL as well,
- [00:00:35.928]the enrollment numbers are out for the year.
- [00:00:37.845]Tell us about them, they look pretty impressive.
- [00:00:40.472]Well, we were very, very excited
- [00:00:42.691]to release our enrollment data on Wednesday this week
- [00:00:45.662]that showed that for UNL we had record enrollment
- [00:00:49.501]in our 147 year history.
- [00:00:52.478]Nearing the 26,000 student mark.
- [00:00:54.676]Just about 25,900 students
- [00:00:57.288]on our campus studying this fall.
- [00:00:59.934]Up across the board, so we saw increases
- [00:01:02.542]in resident enrollment of students
- [00:01:04.336]from Nebraska across the state.
- [00:01:06.576]We saw big enrollment increase in non-resident enrollment
- [00:01:10.529]from outside the state of Nebraska,
- [00:01:13.091]in particular Illinois and Minnesota and Wisconsin.
- [00:01:16.885]Increases in our international enrollment,
- [00:01:19.772]following a number of years of growth in that arena.
- [00:01:23.185]So we couldn't be happier that we got
- [00:01:26.004]record number of students studying
- [00:01:27.632]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:29.832]We think that's a big win for the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:32.196]Absolutely.
- [00:01:33.029]What, when people hear us talk about enrollment going up,
- [00:01:35.214]what does that mean for the university?
- [00:01:37.581]Well, of course it means for us, we're just excited
- [00:01:40.673]that we have that many more students studying here
- [00:01:43.532]and preparing themselves for their careers
- [00:01:47.069]and life out ahead of them.
- [00:01:49.101]We think for the state, it's a big deal too
- [00:01:51.303]because attracting students to the flagship university
- [00:01:55.660]here to come and be challenged and to learn
- [00:01:57.824]in the fields of study that they're choosing to study in
- [00:02:01.681]as undergraduates as well as our graduate students
- [00:02:04.488]pursuing masters and PHD students.
- [00:02:06.871]It's a big driver for the state.
- [00:02:08.869]Driver in talent that will become the citizens
- [00:02:11.922]of the state, if you will.
- [00:02:13.834]In the future, economic development for the state.
- [00:02:17.257]So it's a big deal for us.
- [00:02:19.982]We think it's actually even a bigger deal for the state.
- [00:02:22.982]You mentioned some up numbers
- [00:02:24.737]in some of the other states around Nebraska.
- [00:02:26.367]How has that happened?
- [00:02:27.222]Has it just been a master plan
- [00:02:28.893]to get admissions out in some of those areas?
- [00:02:31.226]How does that work?
- [00:02:32.327]Well, you know Greg, when we joined the Big Ten,
- [00:02:35.260]five plus years ago now,
- [00:02:37.093]that opened up a little bit of a different footprint,
- [00:02:40.392]if you will, of the country to us.
- [00:02:42.309]Where we'd been recruiting mostly
- [00:02:44.228]in the Western part of the Midwest,
- [00:02:46.227]the Plains part of the Midwest.
- [00:02:48.182]That Big Ten footprint, especially in the Chicago area
- [00:02:52.097]and the Minneapolis area and the Milwaukee area,
- [00:02:55.155]opened up to us for students there
- [00:02:58.251]to be able to attend a Beg Ten University.
- [00:03:01.067]But come to Nebraska to do that.
- [00:03:04.287]So we've heightened our recruitment certainly
- [00:03:07.506]in those states.
- [00:03:09.300]In Minnesota, in Illinois, in Wisconsin.
- [00:03:13.244]We've also seen big gains in Texas.
- [00:03:15.642]We've seen big gains in California.
- [00:03:18.248]We've seen big gains in Kansas City and Denver
- [00:03:21.189]which make sense to us logically here geographically.
- [00:03:26.246]Our admissions and recruiting folks
- [00:03:28.286]have been doing a huge job.
- [00:03:30.202]They really have ramped up their efforts.
- [00:03:33.622]And we've done that also in the state.
- [00:03:36.108]So I was particularly pleased this year
- [00:03:38.840]to see that we're up in Omaha.
- [00:03:40.586]We're up in Lincoln.
- [00:03:41.604]We're up in Greater Nebraska across the state.
- [00:03:44.747]And students from Nebraska choosing to come
- [00:03:46.861]to their state's flagship university.
- [00:03:48.652]We're glad about that.
- [00:03:49.589]And the diversity numbers are pretty good too.
- [00:03:52.115]Absolutely, biggest freshman class.
- [00:03:54.880]If you look at just our incoming class,
- [00:03:57.204]4,860 students in our freshman class.
- [00:04:01.107]Biggest freshman class we've ever had.
- [00:04:03.064]The most diverse freshman class we've ever had.
- [00:04:05.793]Highest academically capable class we've ever had
- [00:04:09.210]when you look at it in total,
- [00:04:11.045]the experience and background that they bring.
- [00:04:13.446]Highest non-resident class we've ever had.
- [00:04:15.728]So very pleased to see that we're becoming
- [00:04:18.335]an ever increasing, more diverse population.
- [00:04:21.020]And where we're attracting these students from
- [00:04:23.304]I think speaks highly to the credibility
- [00:04:25.715]that our university has gained.
- [00:04:27.591]We're visiting with Nebraska Chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:04:29.956]here on countdown to kickoff.
- [00:04:31.141]I know one of your goals is going beyond
- [00:04:33.665]just recruiting students to campus
- [00:04:35.301]but trying to invest and support
- [00:04:36.687]those students that are already here.
- [00:04:39.054]Yeah, and that's part
- [00:04:39.905]of our enrollment increase this year.
- [00:04:41.782]To really be really candid,
- [00:04:45.129]we had more freshman students coming in
- [00:04:48.024]like I mentioned a minute ago,
- [00:04:49.330]but we're also had more students who are being successful
- [00:04:52.429]in being retained as students from
- [00:04:54.303]that freshman to that sophomore year,
- [00:04:56.013]sophomore to junior year, up to graduation.
- [00:04:58.946]So we certainly saw that in our numbers this time.
- [00:05:01.592]You know we were up 650 students across the campus.
- [00:05:05.059]Only a couple hundred of those
- [00:05:06.855]were from the freshman class increase.
- [00:05:08.541]So a big chunk of that is increased retention,
- [00:05:12.490]so the programs that we've put into place
- [00:05:14.473]in the last number of years
- [00:05:16.040]in academic counseling and study stops for our students
- [00:05:19.699]and using data through our MyRED system that helps us
- [00:05:22.916]to connect the professors to the students in their classes
- [00:05:26.340]and monitoring
- [00:05:29.632]their success through the semester
- [00:05:32.808]and their progress through the semester
- [00:05:34.640]has become a big part of that you know recruitment
- [00:05:38.636]but retention side of our equation
- [00:05:41.326]on our enrollment increase as well.
- [00:05:43.201]So very pleased about those changes and that growth
- [00:05:46.789]and the retention of our student body.
- [00:05:48.581]Wonderful.
- [00:05:49.414]It does all go hand in hand.
- [00:05:50.269]Well, great to see you.
- [00:05:51.498]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:05:52.331]We'll look forward to our chat next week.
- [00:05:53.185]Go Big Red.
