[00:00:06.832]against the Fresno State Bulldogs, 7:05 kickoff tonight.
[00:00:09.955]And we're delighted to be joined by Nebraska chancellor
[00:00:12.161]Ronnie Green, we will be talking to Chancellor Green
[00:00:14.623]throughout the football season, and it's great
[00:00:16.867]to get this thing going, I'm sure you're excited
[00:00:18.824]to watch a football game. We sure are,
[00:00:21.146]I mean, the momentum's been building all summer,
[00:00:24.650]and all Nebraskans and Husker fans have been looking forward
[00:00:27.678]to this game week, and opening game tonight.
[00:00:30.808]So we're excited to see the guys play,
[00:00:33.382]and we're expecting big things from 'em.
[00:00:35.612]Earlier in the week you got some really good news about
[00:00:37.760]a pretty significant research grant for the university,
[00:00:40.890]what can you tell our audience about that?
[00:00:43.087]On Tuesday we announced that we just received
[00:00:46.774]$11.3 million from the National Institutes of Health
[00:00:50.024]from the federal government to establish a new center
[00:00:54.029]of biomedical research excellence, they're called COBRES,
[00:00:57.430]or Center for Biomedical Research Excellence.
[00:01:00.103]On our campus this is the fourth one
[00:01:02.501]that we've established here, we have a virology center
[00:01:05.541]that was established about 15 years ago
[00:01:08.185]under this same program, a Redox Biology Center,
[00:01:11.068]an obesity prevention center just a couple of years ago,
[00:01:15.192]and now this one, which deals with metabolic disease
[00:01:19.209]and signals that go wrong between cells in the body
[00:01:23.394]and between cells and tissues in the body, for cancer,
[00:01:26.668]for diabetes, for liver disease.
[00:01:29.117]I have a set of researchers from chemistry and biochemistry
[00:01:32.245]engineering that are working together now
[00:01:35.539]on this new center, so very pleased about that.
[00:01:38.851]Doctor Prem Paul, our recent vice chancellor
[00:01:41.902]for research and economic development,
[00:01:44.055]the last 15 years at the university was instrumental
[00:01:47.170]in all four of those COBRE centers
[00:01:50.428]being established, has been working
[00:01:52.666]for about three years to establish this one.
[00:01:55.365]So very exciting to see that announced
[00:01:58.265]and see that new effort underway.
[00:02:00.774]We're also very excited because it's tied
[00:02:02.872]to the University of Nebraska Medical Center,
[00:02:04.960]so like our virology center, this is a joint effort
[00:02:08.244]between UNL and between UNMC in building out further
[00:02:13.010]our biomedical research capacity in the state.
[00:02:16.556]So big news, big exciting news for folks
[00:02:20.276]in our Arts and Sciences, Ag and Engineering areas.
[00:02:23.734]You mentioned Prem Paul, and with a heavy heart
[00:02:26.224]we learned yesterday of his passing.
[00:02:28.758]Talk about what he meant to this school
[00:02:31.528]and your remembrances of him.
[00:02:33.477]Doctor Paul has been a phenomenal research
[00:02:36.349]and economic development leader for our campus,
[00:02:39.953]came here in 2001 from Iowa State University,
[00:02:43.234]a very highly respected internationally,
[00:02:45.879]veterinary scientist himself, worked on swine diseases
[00:02:49.064]earlier in his career at Iowa State,
[00:02:51.839]and he's been really transformational
[00:02:54.582]for our research enterprise at the university,
[00:02:57.760]and we're the research intensive campus
[00:02:59.962]of the university system, the flagship campus
[00:03:02.204]of the university, and Prem really has taken us
[00:03:05.760]to new heights across a variety of areas of research.
[00:03:09.759]But just a phenomenal impact that Prem had.
[00:03:13.403]His big statement is always to think big,
[00:03:16.732]to act big, to do big, and he's certainly
[00:03:19.839]been big for the University of Nebraska.
[00:03:22.073]We're visiting with Nebraska chancellor Ronnie Green,
[00:03:24.624]and another big story this week,
[00:03:26.844]a lot of Nebraskans are engaged with the state fair
[00:03:29.083]that's been going on at Grand Island
[00:03:30.809]and will wrap up on Labor Day,
[00:03:32.396]how big a presence does UNL have at the fair?
[00:03:35.057]Well, the state fair is now over 100 years old,
[00:03:38.193]it's been going on as a tradition here in Nebraska
[00:03:40.744]for a long time, for most of that life in Lincoln.
[00:03:44.290]The former state fairgrounds that are now innovation campus,
[00:03:47.828]Nebraska Innovation Campus here with the university,
[00:03:51.367]this is its now 60 year in running out at Grand Island.
[00:03:55.988]The new fair site, it's been highly successful
[00:03:59.488]and that move out there, attendance has gone up,
[00:04:02.824]it's been returned much more to its agricultural kind of
[00:04:05.832]roots as a state fair, engagement of people
[00:04:08.904]across the state, in the region, that have supported it.
[00:04:12.490]It's a huge deal for UNL as well as other parts
[00:04:16.541]of the university system, extension in particular,
[00:04:19.848]with youth projects and 4-H and the FFA programs
[00:04:24.306]around the state, around agriculture especially,
[00:04:27.975]but also in youth development, in leadership development
[00:04:30.847]and a lot of other areas in the consumer sciences,
[00:04:33.827]if you will, so they have a chance to display their work,
[00:04:38.001]it's best known for all the livestock shows,
[00:04:41.228]so you get to go out, I'm a livestock guy,
[00:04:43.260]so you're getting to see the cattle shows
[00:04:45.862]where I used to carry a stick and a halter,
[00:04:48.252]it's fun to see as well, but a very successful run,
[00:04:52.318]they're finishing up their first week,
[00:04:54.774]looking forward to being out there tomorrow myself
[00:04:57.361]for a lot of university events that we have around
[00:05:00.396]the Labor Day weekend, so great to see the fair underway.
