- [00:00:00.322]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.438]exciting vocabulary apps.
- [00:00:05.736](upbeat music)
- [00:00:18.758]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin'
- [00:00:20.199]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech Edge
- [00:00:23.210]and today I'm talking about some new vocabulary apps.
- [00:00:26.454]Some of them may not be new to you
- [00:00:28.105]but I've discovered them recently
- [00:00:29.701]so I want to talk about them.
- [00:00:31.117]The first one is TypeShift.
- [00:00:32.688]TypeShift is an app
- [00:00:34.716]from the Merriam-Webster dictionary people
- [00:00:37.334]and I'm really excited that the different
- [00:00:40.742]dictionary companies are really creating
- [00:00:42.638]some interesting apps that help people learn vocabulary,
- [00:00:45.615]vocabulary is hard to learn, you need lots of practice,
- [00:00:48.588]we know you need lots of exposures,
- [00:00:50.782]so having an app that does that is fantastic
- [00:00:53.351]and this one is called TypeShift.
- [00:00:55.272]TypeShift is a kind of a game
- [00:00:56.834]that allows you to look for words
- [00:00:58.523]and let's just look at one.
- [00:01:01.873]So I go to Packs, and I've got a few really cool ones,
- [00:01:09.738]let's try this one, here is a simple one.
- [00:01:13.587]So you have...
- [00:01:23.670]Maybe I need to use Wacks,
- [00:01:27.372]and Yacks, so you can see,
- [00:01:29.532]you have to look around for a while
- [00:01:31.222]and some are harder than others
- [00:01:32.629]so you need to select your levels very clearly
- [00:01:34.704]and you need to get, if you see on the top right hand,
- [00:01:38.229]you've got percentages, when you get to 100%
- [00:01:41.183]you can move to the next one, you can have hints
- [00:01:44.508]and you can ask friends, if you've got friends on this app
- [00:01:48.233]and you can see that if it's not correct,
- [00:01:52.198]it'll simply let you know that this is not a real world
- [00:01:57.814]but here's the word Wares
- [00:02:04.811]and I can use the word Execs, nope, no C there.
- [00:02:10.602]And you actually have to work quite hard
- [00:02:12.835]and what I love about this is once you get something solved,
- [00:02:17.404]so let's go to something I've solved before, alright?
- [00:02:23.734]A nice view will be a vista, right?
- [00:02:29.649]And you can see now it's erased,
- [00:02:31.364]you might find one in a mall, that would be a kiosk, right?
- [00:02:40.341]And then disgraced 90's cartoon mascot...
- [00:02:52.713]Camel? I don't know.
- [00:02:55.214]System in India would be a Caste, oh it was Camel.
- [00:03:01.865]Obstruct breathing is choke
- [00:03:04.530]and you can see how the puzzle is complete,
- [00:03:06.966]so that's one way to complete this
- [00:03:09.747]and it gives you the time,
- [00:03:12.582]so you've got the time element as well.
- [00:03:14.611]So this is TypeShift, you can do it
- [00:03:18.685]with clues or without clues but it's a great way
- [00:03:21.759]to practice and learn new vocabulary
- [00:03:23.836]and what I love about this is the Merriam-Webster dictionary
- [00:03:27.279]actually allows you, when you're done with a puzzle,
- [00:03:30.153]to click on words you don't know because sometimes
- [00:03:32.536]you can spell words you don't actually know
- [00:03:34.629]the meaning of and it'll take you over
- [00:03:36.361]and show you the meaning of those words.
- [00:03:38.667]So that's the first one that I wanted to show you,
- [00:03:40.994]the second one I wanted to show you is called Wordie
- [00:03:44.224]and Wordie by FastMind is another way
- [00:03:47.236]to do vocabulary learning
- [00:03:51.221]and this concept has been around for a long, long time
- [00:03:54.560]and that is you have four pictures
- [00:03:56.239]and you have to examine what word connects all of them
- [00:04:01.813]and in this case it's all cookies of some kind
- [00:04:05.026]so let's try to see if Cookie works here
- [00:04:09.371]and you have to spell it, so you've got also
- [00:04:11.270]the autographic component on top of that
- [00:04:13.246]as part of the vocabulary learning strategies.
- [00:04:16.673]Let's try another one just for fun,
- [00:04:20.273]so this is all about...
- [00:04:23.434]So the clues actually include some of the letters
- [00:04:26.115]and in this case I've got a few of the letters
- [00:04:29.703]and I know that the term is Cheat
- [00:04:32.246]and I got it correctly, so again,
- [00:04:34.335]you can look at everything that is going on
- [00:04:41.189]and get some clues to help.
- [00:04:43.209]Here's another one and these are all, I think, Temples
- [00:04:47.214]of some sort or another and you can see how that goes on.
- [00:04:51.018]So this is a different way to approach vocabulary,
- [00:04:53.359]what I love about that is that you have to understand
- [00:04:56.009]the pictures but there's minimal language input,
- [00:04:59.274]it actually requires you to understand the term deeply
- [00:05:02.104]and to think what connects it so it creates
- [00:05:04.104]really thick and rich semantic webs in your brain
- [00:05:07.486]and helps kids, or adults, really think about
- [00:05:10.548]what is the meaning of vocabulary
- [00:05:12.866]and how it connects to other concepts,
- [00:05:14.948]so these are fantastic ways.
- [00:05:16.523]So this is Wordie and the last one that I want to talk about
- [00:05:21.296]is more traditional, and this is Wokabulary,
- [00:05:24.144]so it's with a wok, and what you can do,
- [00:05:26.982]is whether you do it in English
- [00:05:28.399]or you do it between languages,
- [00:05:30.273]you can create cards that become learning cards
- [00:05:33.117]and you can say how well you know them
- [00:05:35.193]and then it creates quizzes
- [00:05:36.813]that allows you to test your own knowledge.
- [00:05:39.128]So here's the quiz, and you can see
- [00:05:40.914]that it allows you to say how many questions there will be
- [00:05:44.168]and if you want to filter them or anything else
- [00:05:49.080]and now it starts, so here's the word
- [00:05:53.340]and this is the word Why in Hebrew
- [00:05:55.247]and so I would look at it, I would translate it in my head
- [00:05:58.284]and I would say it and then I would mark
- [00:06:01.286]if it's correct or incorrect and it gives me the answer,
- [00:06:05.040]it gives me the other side of the card.
- [00:06:06.756]So this is an easy way to practice new vocabulary,
- [00:06:10.415]you have to collect that vocabulary,
- [00:06:12.039]you have to create your own dictionary,
- [00:06:13.427]but it does allow you and the device itself
- [00:06:16.772]to actually use also oral feedback
- [00:06:19.871]so you can actually hear it and practice saying it.
- [00:06:24.197]So this is Wokabulary, it's very, very simple
- [00:06:27.053]but I think a very efficient way
- [00:06:28.509]for you to design your own practice
- [00:06:30.477]and not to rely on outside sources
- [00:06:32.288]defining what your vocabulary is.
- [00:06:34.487]So today, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:06:36.780]we've talked about three apps that do very different things
- [00:06:39.659]when you practice about words.
- [00:06:41.735]TypeShift helps you discover words
- [00:06:44.374]within a structure, by shifting the columns,
- [00:06:46.943]it's very game-like, it's lots of fun
- [00:06:50.086]and it does allow you to explore meanings.
- [00:06:52.391]Wokabulary allows you to practice
- [00:06:54.387]through using a more traditional note card approach
- [00:06:59.264]where you have a definition or the word in one language,
- [00:07:02.240]if you're working in multiple languages,
- [00:07:04.802]and it has the audio on top of that
- [00:07:07.437]and Wordie, that allows you to look at the common theme
- [00:07:11.471]and really focus on semantics.
- [00:07:14.102]So, these are fantastic, they do very different things,
- [00:07:17.654]they can be used with different grade levels
- [00:07:19.577]and I'll see you next time,
- [00:07:21.275]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:07:23.741](upbeat music)
