- [00:00:01.282]Hello,
- [00:00:02.281]Thank your for being a part of the
- [00:00:03.791]4-H judging experience.
- [00:00:05.271]We know that's an important part of
- [00:00:07.477]the 4-H project, and you get the chance
- [00:00:10.627]to celebrate and hear about what young
- [00:00:12.817]people are learning, what they've done
- [00:00:14.497]throughout their 4-H year.
- [00:00:16.027]I want to give you some tips on making
- [00:00:18.277]this a quality learning experience
- [00:00:20.307]for the 4-H'er.
- [00:00:21.717]They'll help you, and they'll help the
- [00:00:23.642]4-H'er be more engaged.
- [00:00:26.012]We're going to talk about three things:
- [00:00:27.712]being welcoming,
- [00:00:28.702]being reflective,
- [00:00:30.032]and being encouraging.
- [00:00:31.882]When the 4-H'er comes to you,
- [00:00:34.022]be welcoming.
- [00:00:34.812]Give them that 4-H smile.
- [00:00:36.472]Ask them what they're doing,
- [00:00:38.692]how they feel this project has helped them,
- [00:00:40.602]and just create a welcoming environment
- [00:00:42.932]for them.
- [00:00:43.772]It makes the whole experience
- [00:00:45.462]be more positive.
- [00:00:47.385]The second part of the 4-H
- [00:00:49.005]judging experience is to help them reflect.
- [00:00:51.385]Ask probing questions, and do some
- [00:00:54.555]reflective listening.
- [00:00:55.915]What is it that they learned
- [00:00:57.775]during the process?
- [00:00:58.645]What was easy?
- [00:01:00.035]What was a challenge?
- [00:01:01.315]And what might they do to make the process
- [00:01:03.385]go differently the next time?
- [00:01:05.065]It's all about reflecting and
- [00:01:07.015]making sure that they're thinking about
- [00:01:09.285]the whole process and what they learned
- [00:01:12.075]as a result of that process.
- [00:01:14.732]The third thing that can make the judging
- [00:01:16.622]experience better and go more smoothly
- [00:01:18.362]is being encouraging.
- [00:01:19.482]What you're looking at is the culmination
- [00:01:21.842]of a year of their work.
- [00:01:23.762]So, ask the 4-H'er what they're
- [00:01:26.392]thinking about doing the next time
- [00:01:28.202]to take this a level deeper.
- [00:01:29.732]Be encouraging about a new project
- [00:01:32.462]that they might try after this project.
- [00:01:35.172]How might they use the skills
- [00:01:36.682]that they've gained to apply to another
- [00:01:38.822]project, to apply to potential career.
- [00:01:41.042]What might they do next
- [00:01:43.292]time to even go deeper into
- [00:01:45.302]their 4-H experience?
- [00:01:46.952]Being welcoming,
- [00:01:48.102]being reflective, and encouraging.
- [00:01:50.582]Three steps to the 4-H judging process
- [00:01:53.192]that can make it go better for all.
- [00:01:55.132]Thanks for all you do
- [00:01:56.872]and for contributing to the
- [00:01:58.442]success of young people.
