- [00:00:01.250]Thank you for join us.
- [00:00:02.639]Today, we are going to talk
- [00:00:03.639]about the 4-H ribbon system and
- [00:00:05.539]how we use that when we're
- [00:00:06.914]judging at county and state fairs.
- [00:00:09.209]My name is Lisa Kaslon
- [00:00:10.089]And I'm the District 4-H Coordinator
- [00:00:11.839]in the Northeast District.
- [00:00:13.589]And I'm glad that I can share with you
- [00:00:15.589]some information that will help you
- [00:00:17.119]as you judge at fairs this summer
- [00:00:18.879]and in the upcoming years.
- [00:00:21.253]The 4-H ribbon system uses what we call
- [00:00:23.556]the Danish judging system
- [00:00:25.125]at county and state fairs.
- [00:00:26.615]Exhibits are judged against a standard
- [00:00:28.785]rather than against other exhibits.
- [00:00:32.000]So, what this means is that it's judged
- [00:00:33.772]according to what characteristics meet
- [00:00:35.572]the quality of standards for each specific
- [00:00:37.832]type of exhibit.
- [00:00:39.711]In the Danish judging system,
- [00:00:41.361]there could be any number of
- [00:00:43.080]purples, blues, reds, or whites, because
- [00:00:45.300]one exhibit is not compared to another.
- [00:00:48.321]Let us know visit what
- [00:00:49.685]each ribbon placing means, and how you
- [00:00:51.975]would award that ribbon based on the
- [00:00:54.175]quality of standards.
- [00:00:55.874]A purple ribbon means that the exhibit
- [00:00:58.084]is of superior quality and has met
- [00:01:00.011]and exceeded all of the standards.
- [00:01:02.006]When awarding a purple ribbon
- [00:01:03.836]we want those exhibits to be recognized
- [00:01:06.036]for clearly exceeding and going
- [00:01:07.786]above and beyond what was expected
- [00:01:09.936]from that exhibit.
- [00:01:12.912]A blue ribbon means that the exhibit
- [00:01:14.532]is above average and that has met almost
- [00:01:16.625]all of the standards in a way that
- [00:01:18.455]surpassed the norm.
- [00:01:20.070]A blue ribbon is still above average.
- [00:01:22.000]It has not met as many of the standards
- [00:01:24.180]as a purple.
- [00:01:26.221]It maybe a little less above
- [00:01:27.731]average than a purple ribbon.
- [00:01:29.438]Once you start judging, it's easy
- [00:01:31.218]to see where those standards fall and
- [00:01:33.278]how you can place these exhibits.
- [00:01:35.208]But a blue ribbon is also still an
- [00:01:36.998]outstanding exhibit.
- [00:01:39.746]A red ribbon indicates average quality
- [00:01:41.856]and that the exhibit has met
- [00:01:43.516]the majority of standards in such a way
- [00:01:45.376]that the benchmark was reached but
- [00:01:46.876]not exceeded.
- [00:01:49.100]Often times we have come to the
- [00:01:50.890]assumption in the ribbon placing system
- [00:01:52.630]that a red ribbon is not a good ribbon.
- [00:01:54.407]But on the other hand we know
- [00:01:55.857]that a red ribbon is still above average
- [00:01:58.090]or is meeting that average for the exhibit.
- [00:02:01.546]We often need to articulate this better
- [00:02:03.336]when we're working with kids either
- [00:02:05.036]in our comments or
- [00:02:06.126]in our written comments or
- [00:02:07.976]in our oral comments during an interview
- [00:02:09.996]to help them understand that they
- [00:02:11.646]have still done an excellent job.
- [00:02:14.186]A white ribbon is the last ribbon
- [00:02:15.246]we would typically give, and
- [00:02:16.461]it signifies below average in quality and
- [00:02:18.591]that the exhibit does not meet standards.
- [00:02:21.151]This is ribbon we often don't want to give
- [00:02:23.161]but sometimes have to if the standards
- [00:02:26.281]are not met or clearly something is unsafe
- [00:02:28.331]or has not been cooked long enough
- [00:02:31.171]or processes which require standards
- [00:02:34.221]to be involved that are not met.
- [00:02:37.231]Your job as a 4-H judge
- [00:02:38.621]is to assess, know, and understand
- [00:02:40.151]these standards prior to judging.
- [00:02:42.531]And it is an important job of a
- [00:02:44.231]county or state fair judge.
- [00:02:45.712]There are lots of ways to do that.
- [00:02:47.602]We often hire judges and hire you
- [00:02:49.482]because of your knowledge and
- [00:02:50.572]expertise in each area.
- [00:02:51.962]And so many times you know these
- [00:02:53.562]standards.
- [00:02:54.632]We also have developed standards
- [00:02:55.812]for project areas that can be
- [00:02:57.502]obtained from your local Extension office.
- [00:03:01.464]In 4-H, we believe that using
- [00:03:03.084]the Danish judging system gives every
- [00:03:04.944]4-H member the recognition deserved
- [00:03:06.894]for the work that was done.
- [00:03:08.024]And we believe it helps young people
- [00:03:10.114]the need to improve their skills
- [00:03:12.004]within a non-competitive environment.
- [00:03:15.214]I think it's important to also understand
- [00:03:17.144]that we say the Danish system is
- [00:03:18.494]non-competitive.
- [00:03:19.624]We are really judging exhibits
- [00:03:21.284]against a standard not against each other.
- [00:03:23.414]Another important message we can tell
- [00:03:25.104]our youth.
- [00:03:26.989]As a judge, we believe that you should
- [00:03:28.619]think about these things as you judge.
- [00:03:30.709]4-H members are more important
- [00:03:32.649]than 4-H exhibits.
- [00:03:33.849]And learning how to do a project
- [00:03:35.659]is more important than the project itself.
- [00:03:37.489]There's always more than one good
- [00:03:39.489]way to do most things, and that a
- [00:03:42.269]balanced program of work and play
- [00:03:44.279]geared toward the individual
- [00:03:45.849]is more important than winning.
- [00:03:47.299]And we know that every youth
- [00:03:48.969]wants to be notices, needs to be noticed
- [00:03:51.179]to feel important and to experience
- [00:03:53.259]success and be praised.
- [00:03:54.769]So as a judge when you consider
- [00:03:56.489]the comments and the oral reasons
- [00:03:59.299]that you give back to your members
- [00:04:00.779]please continue to praise them and
- [00:04:02.399]think about sharing with them the
- [00:04:03.639]good things they have done and
- [00:04:04.599]learned from the project.
- [00:04:06.962]We want to thank you for your service
- [00:04:08.432]to the 4-H program, and for all you do
- [00:04:10.512]when judging exhibits.
- [00:04:11.992]I hope this helps you understand the 4-H
- [00:04:13.732]Danish system better.
