- [00:00:12.425]The original mission of land grant universities
- [00:00:15.283]was to provide broad based university education.
- [00:00:20.804]At no time is that more important than today.
- [00:00:23.822]To educate young people to participate
- [00:00:26.996]and grow in ever more sophisticated society and economy.
- [00:00:32.017]And if Nebraska is gonna stay competitive
- [00:00:35.416]it is an absolute must that our university system
- [00:00:39.166]continues to prosper and excel.
- [00:00:42.666]We are the flagship institution and that means to lead.
- [00:00:46.211]And the world and Nebraska are looking to us
- [00:00:48.831]for big ideas, solutions to important problems
- [00:00:52.238]and that's an exciting opportunity for us going forward.
- [00:00:56.548]This is where Nebraska gets its innovation,
- [00:01:00.447]it's talent, the energy it will need
- [00:01:03.712]to be competitive with other states
- [00:01:06.594]and other countries going forward.
- [00:01:09.885]Nebraska has an opportunity to be a leader
- [00:01:12.204]in the Big Ten, in the nation, and globally
- [00:01:15.848]because of, not only the amazing
- [00:01:18.198]research that's going on here,
- [00:01:19.625]but because we've really taken some opportunities
- [00:01:22.379]in the past few years to grow.
- [00:01:24.003]To grow our research endeavors, to grow our faculty.
- [00:01:27.144]Nebraska's uniquely positioned to lead
- [00:01:30.481]the nation in land a grant university system.
- [00:01:33.192]Nebraska is situated pretty much
- [00:01:36.079]in the bread basket of the United States.
- [00:01:39.114]And that aquifer we've got out there
- [00:01:41.708]is something that's gonna become more and more valuable.
- [00:01:45.211]We have diversity across the state
- [00:01:47.517]with agriculture and ecological zones.
- [00:01:50.086]And we have research and extension centers
- [00:01:52.289]throughout the state that are addressing
- [00:01:54.584]our people's needs and their questions.
- [00:01:57.448]Both the agriculture enterprise
- [00:01:59.839]and the arts and sciences enterprise
- [00:02:02.369]are sort of combined here in one institution.
- [00:02:06.604]That I think diversifies the intellectual experience
- [00:02:10.493]in a way that you don't get everywhere else.
- [00:02:14.409]If we're gonna continue to be leaders
- [00:02:17.171]in the 21st century we're gonna have to move to a new level.
- [00:02:21.100]And in my view that level is the nexus
- [00:02:24.199]of agriculture, food science,
- [00:02:27.721]health outcomes, and it has to be
- [00:02:29.791]underpinned by great intellectual property.
- [00:02:33.925]That is a key medium in the 21st century.
- [00:02:37.480]The thrust for economic development
- [00:02:40.278]has to be right in the center
- [00:02:43.429]of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:45.949]That's where our jobs are gonna come from.
- [00:02:49.608]That's where our education's going to come from.
- [00:02:53.070]And for this state to be investing
- [00:02:55.533]a significant amount of energy and money
- [00:02:58.788]into the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:01.184]is one of the most important items
- [00:03:02.825]I think we can talk about.
- [00:03:05.015](bright music)
- [00:03:11.855]I think with Ronnie as our Chancellor
- [00:03:13.662]we have the opportunity of a lifetime
- [00:03:15.746]to bring this entire state together
- [00:03:18.496]to help us become the great institution
- [00:03:20.527]that Nebraskan's expect and that the world needs.
- [00:03:23.195]Ronnie believes in the mission
- [00:03:25.627]of the land grant university system.
- [00:03:28.116]He understands the importance
- [00:03:30.242]of land grant universities and how
- [00:03:32.741]they serve the whole state.
- [00:03:34.834]And he does have a passion for service,
- [00:03:39.340]and a passion for education.
- [00:03:40.991]He is an innovator and believes in innovation.
- [00:03:44.575]He is deeply committed to our students.
- [00:03:46.728]Well I have personally witnessed
- [00:03:48.749]Ronnie's passion, drive, and leadership.
- [00:03:52.909]Ronnie is capable of taking the leadership
- [00:03:56.788]and taking us into the new dimensions.
- [00:03:59.809]And the thing I really like about him
- [00:04:01.664]is he never claimed to be an expert in football,
- [00:04:05.036]so he never gave anybody great advice
- [00:04:08.719]in what plays to call.
- [00:04:11.024]If you think about the mission
- [00:04:12.169]of the land grant university system
- [00:04:14.445]the whole idea was that we were going
- [00:04:16.398]to have a system, an educational system
- [00:04:19.497]that would not only educate kids
- [00:04:21.474]but do cutting edge research and apply
- [00:04:23.981]that research in a meaningful way.
- [00:04:27.488]Ronnie gets that, he understands it,
- [00:04:29.774]he understands his mission is all about
- [00:04:31.984]educating kids and getting the research done
- [00:04:35.650]and making sure that we are at
- [00:04:37.766]the cutting edge here in Nebraska.
- [00:04:40.282]Ronnie is our future.
