- [00:00:00.547]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:01.652]Chain Reaction.
- [00:00:03.801](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.072]Hi, I'm Zoe Falls, and today,
- [00:00:18.788]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:19.974]we're going to look at Chain Reaction.
- [00:00:21.728]Chain Reaction is a website from Arizona State University,
- [00:00:25.935]and it has a lot of different science,
- [00:00:30.377]environmental, animal, environment,
- [00:00:34.019]sort of resources for teachers.
- [00:00:37.042]And it includes their little magazine
- [00:00:40.477]that they upload fairly frequently, it looks like,
- [00:00:44.251]and on the different topics.
- [00:00:46.127]As you scroll through, it's urban ecology,
- [00:00:48.869]there's one on making tracks on Mars,
- [00:00:53.571]desert, because Arizona is in a desert.
- [00:00:57.109]And, so as you go through,
- [00:00:58.872]you can kind of see more of what they offer.
- [00:01:03.166]And then they have a teacher's lounge,
- [00:01:04.762]that includes some lesson plans.
- [00:01:07.623]And they have ones on,
- [00:01:12.118]like I said, Little Ecosystem,
- [00:01:14.643]How to Catch a Wave,
- [00:01:16.824]The Tale of a City,
- [00:01:19.015]and it's developed by faculty at the university.
- [00:01:24.252]But they also have some little interactive games,
- [00:01:28.554]and that's what I wanted to look at first.
- [00:01:32.877]So we have Desert Diets,
- [00:01:34.367]and you can match the desert dwellers to the foods they eat,
- [00:01:37.256]so again, going through a unit,
- [00:01:38.947]you're talking about animals and the animal kingdom,
- [00:01:41.255]and who eats what and,
- [00:01:42.088]I mean, I don't live in a desert,
- [00:01:44.667]and it don't know what I could eat if I was in a desert,
- [00:01:47.723]so maybe that's a way in to get your students
- [00:01:50.031]thinking about it, talk about like, where you live,
- [00:01:51.891]what do you eat where you are,
- [00:01:54.278]you can talk about local resources
- [00:01:55.801]that they have, I mean, this is Nebraska,
- [00:01:57.495]we've got a lot of corn, got a lot of beef.
- [00:02:00.542]You but if you're in Hawaii,
- [00:02:02.315]maybe you're like, oh, we got pineapple,
- [00:02:04.419]we got a lot of pineapple.
- [00:02:06.772]And you know, in the desert,
- [00:02:08.092]maybe get them to think about maybe what isn't
- [00:02:10.159]as easily accessible, talk about like water,
- [00:02:13.167]and how it's harder to get water when you're in the desert,
- [00:02:15.643]but can you eat cactus?
- [00:02:18.105]So let's go ahead and look at desert diets,
- [00:02:19.838]we're going to start the game.
- [00:02:22.188]And look at all the, aw, a little bunny.
- [00:02:24.785]Alright, a Chuckwalla,
- [00:02:28.628]never heard of a Chuckwalla before,
- [00:02:30.437]so I've already learned something new.
- [00:02:32.752]Choose the most complete, correct answer,
- [00:02:35.232]form the choices listed on the right.
- [00:02:38.908]I'm hoping he doesn't eat baby birds, I'm hoping.
- [00:02:43.855]So we're going to go with fruits and leaves,
- [00:02:47.160]I was right, that was a total guess mostly,
- [00:02:49.517]because I didn't want them to eat baby anything,
- [00:02:51.901]so I'll go to the next question.
- [00:02:53.962]A Red-Tailed Hawk,
- [00:02:56.925]I'm pretty sure this guys eats,
- [00:03:00.110]rodents, rabbits and snakes, okay.
- [00:03:02.556]So again, it's a fairly simple game,
- [00:03:05.689]and it's very much like, look at our picture,
- [00:03:09.571]do some multiple choice, but you can do it as
- [00:03:11.707]a whole class activity, you could do it in smaller groups
- [00:03:14.672]with the students, and you can do some
- [00:03:17.569]interesting sort of competition type things
- [00:03:19.584]to get them engaged and a excited about it.
- [00:03:22.101]Let's go check out another one,
- [00:03:23.840]Desert Tracks, what animals have left their tracks
- [00:03:25.689]in the desert, alright, so,
- [00:03:27.827]animals tracks from mountains.
- [00:03:30.737]Well you have to know what tracks are good
- [00:03:32.401]and what tracks are bad if you're going to go camping.
- [00:03:35.040]Remember learning that as little kid,
- [00:03:36.813]because if it was bad tracks,
- [00:03:37.924]you needed to be aware and get to the car,
- [00:03:39.781]and like, go back down the mountain.
- [00:03:41.816]If they were good tracks,
- [00:03:42.728]you kind of hid the food and like, you were okay.
- [00:03:45.040]So, this could be a really interesting thing to do
- [00:03:49.001]with the students, because the tracks you're going to find
- [00:03:50.987]in the mountains are probably going to be different
- [00:03:53.139]than the tracks you find in the desert.
- [00:03:56.117]So, from the choices on the left,
- [00:04:00.009]drag the photo of the animal
- [00:04:01.372]under the tracks belonging to that animal.
- [00:04:03.402]Alright, let's see.
- [00:04:11.425]So this one's kind of fun,
- [00:04:12.258]so the animation kind of moves,
- [00:04:13.490]so it looks like it's walking a little bit,
- [00:04:15.973]and you have to choose each one.
- [00:04:21.692]So, I'm pretty sure that, that's a bunny track,
- [00:04:25.941]no it's not, okay, not a bunny track.
- [00:04:29.333]Roadrunner, what's a Roadrunner track look like.
- [00:04:32.232]That's not a Roadrunner track either,
- [00:04:34.090]is that a Bobcat track?
- [00:04:36.570]Nope, okay, I'm running out of options here.
- [00:04:40.474]Maybe it's a Big Horn track, no.
- [00:04:43.313]Hmm,
- [00:04:45.871]Bobcat,
- [00:04:48.188]Big Horn.
- [00:04:52.479]Ha ha,
- [00:04:53.675]alright so it will turn red if it's wrong,
- [00:04:56.241]and you can try again,
- [00:04:58.801]and then you can talk about like,
- [00:04:59.951]the size and what that means,
- [00:05:02.105]what the shape means, if it's got hooves,
- [00:05:04.294]versus if it's got toes and toenails.
- [00:05:08.292]So we're going to continue tracking,
- [00:05:09.453]we'll do one more of these.
- [00:05:13.906]Oh my goodness,
- [00:05:16.097]ha,
- [00:05:17.375]alright, so,
- [00:05:21.622]yay.
- [00:05:23.321]And then,
- [00:05:26.586]okay.
- [00:05:29.897]Yay.
- [00:05:33.242]Alright, again, so you can go through and,
- [00:05:35.185]have your kids work on identifying the tracks.
- [00:05:39.610]So depending on how you're building a unit,
- [00:05:41.416]that might be a nice way to link what you do
- [00:05:43.602]in a field trip or in an outside excursion,
- [00:05:46.696]to what they're doing in the classrooms,
- [00:05:49.085]it's also something that they can access at home,
- [00:05:51.511]so that they can do it with their parents,
- [00:05:52.953]or their siblings or their friends,
- [00:05:54.644]and you know, keep the learning continuing.
- [00:05:59.637]Name that Phile, the suffix phile means liking,
- [00:06:02.741]see if you can figure out what some of these files,
- [00:06:04.308]enjoy looking at the roots of the words.
- [00:06:07.077]Alright, we're going to see,
- [00:06:10.775]audiophile, audiophile likes,
- [00:06:22.615]I want a hint,
- [00:06:24.096]an audio and instrument, let's see here, records, okay.
- [00:06:28.475]So it will give you a hint.
- [00:06:31.691]And,
- [00:06:35.778]ah ha, okay,
- [00:06:37.177]so you have to figure out what these,
- [00:06:39.325]so again, vocabulary building more here, than science,
- [00:06:43.073]but you can talk about suffixes in words,
- [00:06:45.637]and what that means,
- [00:06:46.835]and how that can help identify other words
- [00:06:48.735]as they build their vocabulary.
- [00:06:51.134]So a technophile likes technology,
- [00:06:53.615]a Francophile, okay,
- [00:06:56.910]Anglophile,
- [00:06:58.478]so here you can talk about like,
- [00:06:59.388]where the words come from, Anglo, coming from England,
- [00:07:03.216]even though they don't sound alike,
- [00:07:05.411]but again, as you go through their website,
- [00:07:07.350]they have a a lot of resources you can go through.
- [00:07:10.289]There's also a part that I found
- [00:07:11.693]where you can sign up, and get their magazine
- [00:07:14.951]and stuff sent to you, as an educator.
- [00:07:17.922]So if you're interested in some of their developing
- [00:07:20.447]lesson plans and even joining
- [00:07:22.551]their sort of learning community,
- [00:07:24.157]you can do that and get more information,
- [00:07:27.824]and maybe just spark some new ideas
- [00:07:29.152]on teaching science and engaging your students
- [00:07:31.176]in the classroom.
- [00:07:32.292]So I'm Zoe, and this has been Chain Reaction,
- [00:07:34.309]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom, see you.
- [00:07:36.329](upbeat music)
