- [00:00:00.694]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.743]Pnet interactive simulations.
- [00:00:05.894](upbeat instrumental music)
- [00:00:18.573]Hi, welcome to Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:00:20.361]Today we're going to look at Pnet interactive simulations.
- [00:00:23.490]This is from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
- [00:00:27.350]It is a series of science, and chemistry, and math
- [00:00:34.804]simulations that you can use in your classrooms.
- [00:00:38.447]I was going through and playing with some of these earlier
- [00:00:40.868]this morning and I found one in motion
- [00:00:44.745]that I have yet to successfully complete.
- [00:00:49.293]You land the lunar module on the moon.
- [00:00:55.979]I'm automatically going to be drawn to apps
- [00:00:58.503]that have to do with science, and aerospace, and airplanes.
- [00:01:01.998]But the features that I want to point out to you
- [00:01:04.761]with this are all of the resources for teachers.
- [00:01:08.581]So it will tell you what level it's for,
- [00:01:11.239]middle school, high school.
- [00:01:13.776]Then there are whole bunch of different things
- [00:01:17.131]to go along with it and it will tell you what type it is.
- [00:01:20.340]There's a lab, there's a guided lab with this one.
- [00:01:24.278]Others have clicker questions that are pre-built in.
- [00:01:28.062]So if you're doing a larger unit and you want to figure out
- [00:01:30.640]some free resources to throw in to make your lesson
- [00:01:34.662]a little bit more interactive you can.
- [00:01:37.007]The other feature that I really like,
- [00:01:39.704]and then we'll go through and I'll show you
- [00:01:40.537]a couple of them, is the Google Classroom icon
- [00:01:42.983]which I haven't seen yet on other websites
- [00:01:45.990]so of course I had to figure out what it does.
- [00:01:48.835]When you go to it, if you have your class already using
- [00:01:52.312]Google Classroom you can choose which class it is
- [00:01:54.994]and you can select an action.
- [00:01:57.467]So I'm going to ask a question.
- [00:02:00.700]Then again you can build in right into Google Classroom
- [00:02:06.633]the interaction and have it set up.
- [00:02:10.006]We're going to call this Lunar Lander,
- [00:02:13.156]and try to land the lunar module.
- [00:02:18.945]And let's see here.
- [00:02:21.033]Then you ask it to the class, then it will automatically
- [00:02:24.931]post to your class and you don't even have to leave
- [00:02:26.701]the website with all of the other simulations in it.
- [00:02:32.125]What I like about this is often times when you're doing
- [00:02:34.708]something in class and you have the access to maybe
- [00:02:37.326]some interactive elements within software
- [00:02:40.049]that your school provides that comes with the curriculum,
- [00:02:42.388]students might not be able to access it at home.
- [00:02:45.517]With these, through Google Classroom
- [00:02:47.278]they can access it at home.
- [00:02:48.460]So as they're working through homework
- [00:02:50.045]or maybe they just don't quite remember that step
- [00:02:52.402]that they did in class or was demoed
- [00:02:54.140]or they got to experience,
- [00:02:55.464]they can have that experience at home
- [00:02:57.467]by just logging to Google Classroom which they've been doing
- [00:03:00.488]all along anyway.
- [00:03:01.724]Since Google Classroom can be accessed on a mobile device
- [00:03:05.364]they can do it from an iPad,
- [00:03:06.786]they can do it from a smart phone
- [00:03:08.127]and then they can do it from their computer.
- [00:03:11.069]Let's go ahead and take a look at the Lunar Lander.
- [00:03:13.264]Like I said, oh my, okay.
- [00:03:16.479]I haven't actually successfully done this one.
- [00:03:19.466]But it gives you directions and it's got a really
- [00:03:21.517]sort of 90s video game feel to it.
- [00:03:24.463]It's going to say if you move the up arrow
- [00:03:26.556]you're going to thrust up, then less thrust.
- [00:03:29.668]Then you can tilt it left and right.
- [00:03:32.202]Again with Hidden Figures that just came out
- [00:03:34.194]and all of the talk about NASA currently,
- [00:03:36.060]this could be a really cool way to sort of reorient
- [00:03:38.824]your students into some science concepts and talk about
- [00:03:41.550]what does it really take to land a lunar module on the moon?
- [00:03:45.353]Based on just this simulation I'm going to say
- [00:03:47.524]it's kind of hard because I've crashed
- [00:03:49.190]like 16 different times.
- [00:03:51.953]Then it tells you that you get points for soft landings.
- [00:03:56.667]If I don't die I consider it a success.
- [00:03:59.006]One time I only broke the legs.
- [00:04:00.225]My crew lived, but I broke the legs of the lunar module.
- [00:04:03.412]Then game over if you hit a boulder or crash land.
- [00:04:06.348]We're going to go ahead and give this a try.
- [00:04:08.700]You guys can see my little lunar module.
- [00:04:11.667]I tilt it, I slow down maybe.
- [00:04:21.663]Then I fly back up again, oh my there we go.
- [00:04:26.615]Not sure where I went.
- [00:04:28.774]Over on the right-hand side you can see
- [00:04:30.519]that it's telling you your altitude, the range,
- [00:04:33.971]velocity per minute, your thrust,
- [00:04:36.941]the amount of fuel you have.
- [00:04:40.007]Again your students can use the skills that they've learned
- [00:04:43.542]and use actual science to help them land their module.
- [00:04:49.800]Ha ha, I hit a boulder.
- [00:04:52.421]I'll damage the leg, lost fuel, crash landed,
- [00:04:55.976]killed the crew.
- [00:04:57.642]Like I said, not terribly successful but it lets me
- [00:05:00.568]try again and what's interesting is that it does
- [00:05:02.457]tell you what you did.
- [00:05:03.842]So my landing speed was 16.7 meters per second
- [00:05:06.641]which is really fast and not the soft landing
- [00:05:10.014]that you want.
- [00:05:11.278]It also keeps score so if you have students
- [00:05:12.985]that get really good at it they can keep score.
- [00:05:16.901]But again the idea is they get to sort of get a feel
- [00:05:19.568]for what it looks like, what velocity you need
- [00:05:21.965]to land softly.
- [00:05:23.875]How do you maneuver because it doesn't have breaks.
- [00:05:27.265]So how do you maneuver the lunar module so that
- [00:05:30.173]it lands properly?
- [00:05:32.791]Other ones that you can do that I was looking at,
- [00:05:38.155]there's one, States of Matter.
- [00:05:44.169]So if you're looking at something as simple
- [00:05:47.298]as the water cycle, right?
- [00:05:49.773]When things change state from liquid to solid,
- [00:05:52.819]again this one, if you go to For Teachers it gives you
- [00:05:56.716]all sorts of different things.
- [00:05:59.750]It will give you a lab demo, more lab stuff.
- [00:06:04.910]States of Matter an inquiry based face change,
- [00:06:08.728]go ahead and see what this is.
- [00:06:10.874]Again it gives you lesson plans, student directions,
- [00:06:14.046]lesson plans.
- [00:06:15.957]Again it gives you a lot of resources that go along
- [00:06:18.271]with these simulations.
- [00:06:22.459]As you can see over here not all of them apparently
- [00:06:24.874]can be sent to Google Classroom.
- [00:06:27.335]But if you see the icon you can.
- [00:06:29.770]If not, it does have an embed code so you can embed it.
- [00:06:33.593]You can also download them.
- [00:06:35.271]And they should just allow you to click on it
- [00:06:38.103]and see the simulation.
- [00:06:40.176]But that one isn't going to let me.
- [00:06:42.956]So since we've been looking at chemistry apps
- [00:06:44.845]I was trying to find other sorts of science apps for you.
- [00:06:48.790]This one focuses a lot on physics,
- [00:06:51.675]but there are also biology.
- [00:06:57.527]There are some chemistry ones.
- [00:07:00.940]There is earth science.
- [00:07:05.101]So gravity and orbits, glaciers.
- [00:07:10.627]And then there's some math ones as well.
- [00:07:14.593]So you can look at area, you can look at balance,
- [00:07:22.372]Ohm's law, vector addition.
- [00:07:28.386]Then down here just a list of teacher resources.
- [00:07:32.107]And it will give you tips for how to use them.
- [00:07:35.497]Comes with helpful YouTube videos,
- [00:07:37.146]and who doesn't love a good YouTube video?
- [00:07:39.787]So again just a whole lot of resources for you
- [00:07:43.827]that you can build into whatever sort of lesson
- [00:07:49.008]you're doing in science.
- [00:07:52.099]You can also sort by grade level so let's see
- [00:07:54.700]what they have for elementary school.
- [00:07:57.437]Area Builder, let's see what Area Builder is
- [00:08:08.503]Okay, so we're going to build an area.
- [00:08:11.901]It's an area two, perimeter six.
- [00:08:16.575]Then we can erase.
- [00:08:20.114]I can have two going at once.
- [00:08:23.835]Can I cross over?
- [00:08:24.933]No, it won't let me.
- [00:08:27.899]So then if I go back and see what the game option was,
- [00:08:37.976]go to level one.
- [00:08:39.902]I need to build an area of nine.
- [00:08:52.849]I built an area of nine and it gives me a smiley face.
- [00:08:55.408]Again even if you're at the elementary school level
- [00:08:58.009]there are ones situated for younger learners
- [00:09:01.237]in addition to the ones for high school and middle school,
- [00:09:07.088]and even university, look at that.
- [00:09:10.262]Again I encourage you to just go and look at the ones
- [00:09:14.385]that might be relevant for your students
- [00:09:17.166]and for whatever science unit they might be on.
- [00:09:20.886]Some of the great features are again they get to see
- [00:09:22.657]some motion.
- [00:09:24.445]Not all of them are great.
- [00:09:26.124]Like I said, a couple of games look like 90s video games.
- [00:09:29.826]But again, most of your students will at least remember
- [00:09:32.102]Oregon Trail fondly so there's always that working for ya.
- [00:09:36.064]This has been Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:09:38.627]See ya.
- [00:09:40.454](upbeat instrumental music)
