- [00:00:17.869]I own Colea Alterations here in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:00:22.688]I've had the business for 15 years.
- [00:00:25.517]We adjust ready-to-wear clothing to fit you perfectly.
- [00:00:31.197]We do everything from sewing on a button to relining coats,
- [00:00:35.897]restructuring jackets.
- [00:00:38.899]I have four full-time employees that work for me.
- [00:00:42.867]I also sell a line of women's clothing called Etcetera.
- [00:00:48.237]It's a direct sales business.
- [00:00:50.957]I bring in a sample set
- [00:00:53.139]and set up the clothes in the front room,
- [00:00:56.596]invite customers to come in and place orders.
- [00:01:00.667]I think garment construction was very important
- [00:01:04.539]for my background.
- [00:01:06.317]Any designer needs to know how to put garments together,
- [00:01:10.299]how they're gonna get in and out of the clothes,
- [00:01:14.387]the best methods for seam finishing.
- [00:01:18.488]Another very important aspect that really shaped my career
- [00:01:25.259]was I took advantage of the study tours
- [00:01:29.037]and internship program.
- [00:01:30.648]I went on the Paris Study Tour, the New York Study Tour
- [00:01:35.837]and then essentially ended up
- [00:01:37.739]doing an internship in New York which was imperative
- [00:01:43.587]because I learned that I didn't wanna live in New York
- [00:01:47.339]so that really shaped my career
- [00:01:50.387]and made me and pushed me where I am now.
- [00:01:56.477]I think it's important for the students to have a firm grasp
- [00:02:00.867]on technology, social media, marketing through those avenues
- [00:02:07.259]because that's ever changing
- [00:02:09.459]and that's where the majority of the advertising
- [00:02:12.418]is coming from now aside from word of mouth.
- [00:02:16.517]I also feel a strong background in accounting
- [00:02:20.917]and small business,
- [00:02:22.008]not small business but entrepreneurial,
- [00:02:25.907]that's always an option
- [00:02:27.298]and you should really be ready to explore those options
- [00:02:32.957]as your career moves forward.
- [00:02:35.579]I wish that maybe I had taken the classes more seriously,
- [00:02:42.206]focused a little bit more
- [00:02:44.217]rather than just going through the motions
- [00:02:46.387]of learning the material, taking the test,
- [00:02:49.768]of actually letting it sink in
- [00:02:51.288]and trying to apply it to the real world.
- [00:02:54.347]I feel like I didn't take advantage of that enough.
- [00:02:59.597]Also again more,
- [00:03:01.347]if I had taken more entrepreneurial courses,
- [00:03:04.407]that would have helped me immensely
- [00:03:06.157]which I didn't realize when I was still in college
- [00:03:08.827]that I needed those
- [00:03:10.899]and to get out and see the world
- [00:03:13.077]and have as many experiences as you can
- [00:03:17.587]before you commit to a career
- [00:03:20.197]and just to learn what you love
- [00:03:23.099]and what you have passion for.
- [00:03:26.877]The industry is ever changing
- [00:03:30.197]and you need to be passionate about what you do.
- [00:03:33.059]I got my start in 4-H.
- [00:03:35.857]I think that's an important program
- [00:03:38.117]and that led me into the textile and apparel design program
- [00:03:43.627]and it also piqued my interest in alterations
- [00:03:47.779]and it's all built off of 4-H.
