- [00:00:17.837]I graduated from the TCD program in 2008
- [00:00:22.179]and I moved shortly after to New York City.
- [00:00:24.931]I've been working with J. Crew Group
- [00:00:26.868]for the past seven years.
- [00:00:28.299]I spent six years there as a senior buyer
- [00:00:31.175]working on all their collaborations
- [00:00:33.065]from the women's and Madewell divisions
- [00:00:35.964]and now I work as a stylist
- [00:00:37.436]and I cover the women's website.
- [00:00:39.684]So from idea and product through photo shoot,
- [00:00:44.946]I'm handling everything that is happening on the web.
- [00:00:47.936]I always remember one of my professors telling us
- [00:00:51.278]how important multi-tasking was
- [00:00:53.102]and I don't think I fully understood or believed her
- [00:00:56.396]until years later on the job
- [00:00:58.644]and I think the team here
- [00:01:02.139]creates a really balanced load of coursework
- [00:01:05.252]that's very interdisciplinary
- [00:01:07.068]which is really helpful.
- [00:01:08.452]I think in fashion,
- [00:01:09.456]we're so connected to our cross functional partners
- [00:01:12.308]and to all parts of the industry
- [00:01:14.193]that coming from UNL and having an idea
- [00:01:16.966]about surface design, about merchandising,
- [00:01:19.886]about technology, about science
- [00:01:21.965]informed me to be a better designer,
- [00:01:24.223]a better buyer,
- [00:01:25.056]a better stylist
- [00:01:26.464]and moving through different careers through the years,
- [00:01:29.139]it's been incredibly helpful.
- [00:01:31.467]For me I think a huge piece of importance in the industry
- [00:01:34.924]is people skills and being able to work together
- [00:01:38.337]and to understand how connected departments are
- [00:01:41.045]and to be able to work with cross functional partners
- [00:01:43.722]and build really strong and trusting relationships.
- [00:01:46.259]It's incredibly important
- [00:01:47.096]and I think I began that here at the university.
- [00:01:50.728]Another important thing
- [00:01:52.087]that I began learning at the university
- [00:01:53.950]is the importance of different computer programs
- [00:01:57.357]and technology within the industry.
- [00:01:59.310]It's moving very quickly and we are very digital
- [00:02:01.825]and we are very Excel-based
- [00:02:03.606]and being able to have those proficiencies
- [00:02:06.682]were incredibly important.
- [00:02:09.718]I wish,
- [00:02:10.872]I think I took great advantage
- [00:02:13.142]of the department and the opportunities
- [00:02:15.606]but I now look back and see it as a time
- [00:02:18.641]where I had full and complete reign
- [00:02:20.595]to be creative and to be curious
- [00:02:23.031]and I think taking advantage of that as a student
- [00:02:25.641]is incredibly important
- [00:02:26.922]and taking an internship in something
- [00:02:28.597]that maybe you won't end up in
- [00:02:30.525]or taking a class just because you're interested
- [00:02:33.790]in what organic farming could be
- [00:02:35.660]or something else that strikes your fancy.
- [00:02:39.086]I think it's a chance
- [00:02:40.607]to really help create and build a foundation for your life
- [00:02:43.984]and all of the programs that are available here
- [00:02:47.319]so interesting.
- [00:02:48.174]I wish I would've taken a few more classes
- [00:02:50.384]outside of these buildings
- [00:02:52.498]but it peaked my interest, was a great start.
