- [00:00:15.876]My name is Ramesh Venkataswami.
- [00:00:18.018]I'm a TCD graduate from the year 1994.
- [00:00:23.264]Since then I've been working in the industry
- [00:00:25.211]for the last 21 years.
- [00:00:27.406]I have done work with menswear,
- [00:00:30.057]a brand called Perry Ellis Menswear for 10 years.
- [00:00:33.240]Womenswear, Tracy Reese contemporary womenswear
- [00:00:35.992]for a few years and then my last assignment
- [00:00:39.772]was I was working for the number one blanket company,
- [00:00:42.424]for Home Berkshire Blanket and then my new assignment is
- [00:00:46.706]I'm my own boss for the last six months.
- [00:00:48.940]So it's a brand that I'm launching after collegiate sports
- [00:00:54.637]but it's not totally sports, it's performance outerwear
- [00:00:57.759]for mens.
- [00:00:59.120]So that's where currently I am.
- [00:01:01.037]Well, Nebraska was the first place I came
- [00:01:03.947]when I came from India so it was a big culture shock
- [00:01:07.630]in terms of, in a good way, so the first snow I saw,
- [00:01:12.041]it was in Nebraska, first time I hear country music
- [00:01:16.039]it was in Nebraska, pick up truck, I still want
- [00:01:18.762]a pick up truck today, that's because of Nebraska.
- [00:01:21.936]Those are all personal stuff.
- [00:01:24.149]On the study side, I was raised, you know,
- [00:01:29.650]I got a lot of education on textile science
- [00:01:31.820]so I knew how to design and make a product
- [00:01:35.445]from, why are we choosing this fiber,
- [00:01:38.321]and that sort of things.
- [00:01:40.165]And the staff here motivated me to learn more about the US
- [00:01:44.015]and how things are done in the retail sector
- [00:01:46.026]so that helped me a lot to go outside in
- [00:01:49.366]the big business world, to survive.
- [00:01:52.266]So that's a good part, yeah.
- [00:01:54.261]And, my, not current CEO, last CEO, he's from Iowa City,
- [00:02:01.361]he always tells, this is God's country.
- [00:02:04.477]So people have great value and work ethics,
- [00:02:07.193]that's one thing I learned from Nebraska.
- [00:02:09.588]I would watch that for any day.
- [00:02:12.314]The biggest thing is technology.
- [00:02:14.882]They have to adapt to new technology.
- [00:02:17.060]It's just not in our industry, it's in every industry
- [00:02:20.393]and technology's developing fast and we have to adapt
- [00:02:24.841]or we get left behind, that's one thing.
- [00:02:27.592]Two, for students to graduate and go to the real world
- [00:02:30.857]they have to be strong, they have to take things
- [00:02:34.009]not personal and face criticism in a positive manner
- [00:02:38.372]and then, you know, go for it, you know.
- [00:02:41.322]And then I personally would like to recommend
- [00:02:43.673]all the students in small cities, especially Nebraska,
- [00:02:47.140]Lincoln, go out there, explore, there's nothing wrong
- [00:02:49.942]and you don't, you know, everybody out there is not bad,
- [00:02:53.888]you know, there is a lot of opportunities out there
- [00:02:56.782]and you should know that because you never know
- [00:03:00.107]who you work for in the future.
- [00:03:01.560]It could be a Chinese company, could be Indian company,
- [00:03:03.814]could be European, anybody, doesn't matter.
- [00:03:06.548]The best thing about Nebraska, obviously,
- [00:03:09.219]it's a little slow paced, so it's a great thing
- [00:03:11.757]when you come to a country first time from outside
- [00:03:15.488]it's a good time to come to a town that's much more friendly
- [00:03:18.595]and accommodating.
- [00:03:22.336]So the same thing applies to students who are going
- [00:03:25.445]to school in Nebraska that wanna go and explore the big city
- [00:03:28.987]like New York City or Los Angeles or Milan or Paris.
- [00:03:34.654]Take a step and go to the biggest city, small biggest city,
- [00:03:37.921]do some work part-time, whatever, get to know,
- [00:03:40.440]and then you get rid of all your fears and then explore.
- [00:03:43.715]That's the one way to take small baby steps.
- [00:03:47.097]That's what I think, yeah.
- [00:03:50.039]And I think no matter what they teach, it's up
- [00:03:53.075]to that person to adapt and, you know, go do things.
- [00:03:57.362]Nobody can force you to do anything you don't want to do.
- [00:04:01.301]It's the fear that's stopping you to do things I think.
- [00:04:04.286]You just have to go take that first step
- [00:04:06.696]and everything will be fine.
- [00:04:08.865]Great school, and there's a lot of new things,
- [00:04:11.709]a lot of investments that's in terms of new buildings,
- [00:04:15.615]new architecture, new innovations that is happening
- [00:04:18.513]in Nebraska and the school is still great
- [00:04:21.703]when it comes to sports, number one in volleyball,
- [00:04:24.970]and our football team is not doing that shabby this year.
- [00:04:27.888]So go Red, Big Red, go Huskers.
