- [00:00:03.763]I think architectural engineering
- [00:00:05.043]in general is a place for a lot of aspects
- [00:00:08.712]of engineering to come together.
- [00:00:10.702]Structural, mechanical, electrical, acoustics,
- [00:00:13.603]lighting, sustainable engineers even
- [00:00:16.217]if we move toward energy conservation.
- [00:00:18.561]I just think it's a great opportunity
- [00:00:20.774]for all of these entities to come together
- [00:00:23.113]and really build something that everybody loves and enjoys.
- [00:00:27.622]Architectural engineering, in my mind really,
- [00:00:30.211]is engineering for buildings.
- [00:00:33.100]It's much different than architecture.
- [00:00:35.259]So it's really the technical side of architecture.
- [00:00:38.630]And we are typically looking for students
- [00:00:42.545]that are strong in math and physics,
- [00:00:45.577]but love buildings and have a passion for buildings,
- [00:00:49.515]but don't wanna give up that math and science.
- [00:00:52.209]So how I found out and decided
- [00:00:53.440]to become an architectural engineer was
- [00:00:55.832]through some stuff I got involved in in high school.
- [00:00:58.038]I co-founded a FIRST Robotics team
- [00:00:59.952]and I was really interested in that,
- [00:01:01.702]and I took some courses called Project Lead The Way,
- [00:01:03.953]which were engineering and technology courses.
- [00:01:06.551]And through those, I really found
- [00:01:07.821]a passion in how things work and why they work.
- [00:01:10.872]And, I decided to come visit Nebraska
- [00:01:12.735]for civil engineering and I expressed
- [00:01:14.450]to the advisor I was talking to at the time,
- [00:01:16.341]and I was like, this is my passion.
- [00:01:17.899]I want to work with what's in buildings.
- [00:01:19.901]I wanna know how they're made up and why they run.
- [00:01:22.140]And she's like, "Oh, that's really a degree here,
- [00:01:25.124]"and it's called Architectural Engineering."
- [00:01:26.779]And once she told me about it, I knew
- [00:01:28.408]that that's what I wanted to do with my career,
- [00:01:30.210]and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
- [00:01:32.802]I think some of the challenges
- [00:01:33.781]that upcoming architectural engineers may have
- [00:01:35.850]to face is the ability to adapt
- [00:01:39.210]to all of the changing technology.
- [00:01:42.068]Not just technology in design,
- [00:01:44.099]but technology in construction, technology
- [00:01:47.095]in the tools that we use.
- [00:01:48.600]And I think today's architectural engineer
- [00:01:50.900]is gonna have to be very adaptive
- [00:01:53.392]and eager to continue their education
- [00:01:56.560]and to continue learning as they go throughout their career.
- [00:02:00.235]I always recommend to students that they find
- [00:02:03.212]the first place that they go,
- [00:02:04.490]and that they have outstanding mentors.
- [00:02:06.512]It's more important than the place,
- [00:02:08.579]than the money, than anything.
- [00:02:11.233]Good mentors to continue to learn from,
- [00:02:14.090]and I think a lot of times, student think,
- [00:02:17.123]students graduates think they need
- [00:02:19.221]to go to the highest-paying job,
- [00:02:21.773]or the neatest location.
- [00:02:23.911]But I think more important than anything is that mentoring.
- [00:02:27.813]So the perfect blend of math and physics
- [00:02:30.390]and science with architecture
- [00:02:33.111]is what turned me to architectural engineering.
- [00:02:36.973]And I was lucky enough to have a great program
- [00:02:39.861]in my home state of Nebraska.
- [00:02:41.720]Within architectural engineering, you have several
- [00:02:44.587]different disciplines that you can
- [00:02:46.337]apply your degree to.
- [00:02:48.030]And with these many disciplines,
- [00:02:49.388]it leaves the door open for several
- [00:02:51.328]career paths and options.
- [00:02:52.988]They have to work together in big teams
- [00:02:54.530]a lot more than they've ever had to in the past.
- [00:02:57.069]And that integration is critical,
- [00:02:59.939]and architectural engineers that have background
- [00:03:03.252]in all of those areas is gonna be very,
- [00:03:06.962]very highly sought-after.
- [00:03:08.463]I think the industry is going to continue to blossom.
- [00:03:11.020]I think architectural engineers are going to be in demand.
- [00:03:14.180]Part of the reason I think the demand will be so high
- [00:03:16.399]for architectural engineers is because
- [00:03:17.780]of our ability to collaborate
- [00:03:19.752]and integrate with all of the disciplines.
- [00:03:22.191]So, we have to be able to work
- [00:03:23.784]and talk to an architect, but we also have
- [00:03:25.362]to be able to work with the structural engineer,
- [00:03:27.420]and the mechanical, and the electrical.
- [00:03:29.751]And then all of the other disciplines,
- [00:03:31.220]even outside of what you consider the mainstream.
- [00:03:34.180]All of these things that come together
- [00:03:36.009]to make the building that is the built environment
- [00:03:38.775]that people wanna live in, and grow in, and enjoy.
- [00:03:42.050]So I think that's where the industry's gonna go.
- [00:03:45.951]It's gonna continue to boom.
- [00:03:48.324]Architectural engineers are gonna continue
- [00:03:49.631]to be in demand, and it'll be exciting
- [00:03:53.102]to see the challenges and the opportunities
- [00:03:55.751]that we get to face.
