- [00:00:03.437]Dear historian.
- [00:00:05.059]Here is a new way to study.
- [00:00:06.808]Enjoy the time machine?
- [00:00:08.984](dramatic music)
- [00:00:12.001]Hello. Hi!
- [00:00:13.270]King Alfred the Great.
- [00:00:14.827]I have a couple questions for you.
- [00:00:17.047]Lindsey Peterson's final exam
- [00:00:19.308]wasn't on paper.
- [00:00:20.887]I directed and filmed and edited and produced
- [00:00:25.708]one video about time traveling through history
- [00:00:29.120]for our final review.
- [00:00:30.839]And another as Henry the VIII as The Bachelor.
- [00:00:34.261]Stay on here.
- [00:00:35.434]In the Department of History
- [00:00:36.832]it's never one-size-fits-all.
- [00:00:39.180]Some of these creative projects have been
- [00:00:40.895]utterly remarkable.
- [00:00:42.327]And I think the students work very very hard at them
- [00:00:45.408]but because it's their own, they learn about it.
- [00:00:48.545]They understand it so much more
- [00:00:51.084]than if they just sat for an exam.
- [00:00:53.782]With support from faculty mentors
- [00:00:56.247]students are encouraged to travel their own path.
- [00:00:59.596]What I want to do is make sure
- [00:01:01.430]that I'm not lecturing at them
- [00:01:03.308]but that I'm lecturing and trying to engage them.
- [00:01:06.496]And so, I want it to be student centered
- [00:01:09.196]and not just me imparting that knowledge.
- [00:01:11.735]The history classes that I have taken
- [00:01:13.503]have been very discussion based.
- [00:01:15.284]What the students initiate in the conversation
- [00:01:18.367]and then we kind of feed off each other.
- [00:01:20.116]A Department of History is one of our departments
- [00:01:22.271]that's committed to excellence.
- [00:01:24.703]And delivering that excellence in terms of
- [00:01:27.423]innovative curriculum
- [00:01:29.119]that brings excitement
- [00:01:31.519]and an engagement from all the students in the classroom.
- [00:01:35.444]Innovative programs include the successful
- [00:01:38.079]History Harvest, where students work with the community
- [00:01:41.097]to create digital history projects.
- [00:01:43.678]Digital techniques are also put to use to study text,
- [00:01:46.825]or recreate an environment.
- [00:01:48.852]There's so much about society that is defined
- [00:01:51.615]by the environment in which we live
- [00:01:53.374]and we can't really understand that unless we can see it
- [00:01:55.647]and get a sense of space and presence and scale.
- [00:01:59.199]And 3D graphics allow us to do that in a way
- [00:02:01.203]that would just have been impossible with just text,
- [00:02:03.380]or even with hand drawings.
- [00:02:05.119]By including the digital aspect
- [00:02:06.825]we can take research a step further
- [00:02:09.156]and go about it in a new way.
- [00:02:11.071]Contribute new things to the scholarship.
- [00:02:13.428]The student experience emphasizes
- [00:02:15.540]engagement and critical thinking.
- [00:02:17.596]Small freshman level classes provide a distinctive
- [00:02:20.735]look at the past.
- [00:02:22.580]One of the ones that I teach is an
- [00:02:24.404]introduction to legal history class.
- [00:02:26.751]It's called Making and Breaking Law in
- [00:02:28.543]United States History.
- [00:02:29.885]And we're doing it at the 100 level
- [00:02:31.871]for freshmen exclusively.
- [00:02:33.588]It's really meant to be a nurturing environment
- [00:02:36.628]but one that also teaches them those really creative
- [00:02:39.209]and critical analytical skills.
- [00:02:41.353]A supportive environment extends
- [00:02:43.551]through graduate school.
- [00:02:45.064]They get to interact with us.
- [00:02:46.537]They get to teach with us, in some cases.
- [00:02:48.820]And I think it's a generally pretty collegiate environment.
- [00:02:51.838]It's competitive, but it's not cutthroat.
- [00:02:54.068]The diverse history faculty earns
- [00:02:56.159]International recognition for leading edge research.
- [00:02:59.337]Excellent teaching, and mentoring
- [00:03:01.385]develops a culture of vibrancy.
- [00:03:03.892]So there's a very strong relationship between students
- [00:03:06.482]and their faculty.
- [00:03:07.924]They realize that you have needs
- [00:03:09.588]and that every student is different.
- [00:03:11.516]I really love my subject matter.
- [00:03:13.620]And I really really love my students here
- [00:03:16.084]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:17.780]We're giving them tools not only to help
- [00:03:19.615]with their own research, but hopefully also to make them
- [00:03:22.729]generally more marketable.
- [00:03:24.137]We have a range of courses that we teach
- [00:03:26.900]because our expertise really spans (laughs)
- [00:03:30.205]centuries, millennia.
- [00:03:32.457]And also continents.
- [00:03:33.513]And I like that kind of diversity in terms of
- [00:03:37.588]the content.
- [00:03:38.421]But I also like the different approaches that we
- [00:03:40.254]have to the classroom.
- [00:03:41.812]We like to do research, we like to think,
- [00:03:43.337]we like to bring our scholarship to life.
- [00:03:46.164]And I think that's, that's what a good department should do.
