- [00:00:00.226]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom:
- [00:00:02.564]Digital ReadWorks.
- [00:00:04.297](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.280]Hi, I'm Zoe, and today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:20.571]we're going to look at ReadWorks Digital.
- [00:00:24.373]Last time we looked at readworks.org, and,
- [00:00:27.682]just as a quick refresher, it was a place that had
- [00:00:30.263]a lot of different reading texts and some lesson plans,
- [00:00:33.574]and we talked about one of my favorite features,
- [00:00:35.445]which was the Get An Article A Day feature,
- [00:00:38.191]and what we're gonna look at now is ReadWorks Digital,
- [00:00:43.301]and this is where you can actually set up a classroom,
- [00:00:47.602]have your students log in with their Google account,
- [00:00:50.329]which, when I saw that students could use
- [00:00:51.912]their Google account, it made me really happy
- [00:00:53.852]because a lot of K-12 schools are starting
- [00:00:55.753]to use Google Classrooms.
- [00:00:57.240]You can just really seamlessly engage that way
- [00:01:01.287]and then, again, your students don't have to remember
- [00:01:03.160]another login and another password, and,
- [00:01:06.057]good news for teachers is, you don't either.
- [00:01:09.337]When you just go to digital.readworks.org,
- [00:01:12.327]you get this welcome screen that says, "I'm a teacher,"
- [00:01:14.856]or, "I'm a student".
- [00:01:16.637]I'm gonna go ahead and go over to my teacher login,
- [00:01:21.082]and, when I'm logged in as a teacher,
- [00:01:23.935]I can find and assign articles, create classes,
- [00:01:27.227]assign student reading online, and, again,
- [00:01:28.942]I can support their progress.
- [00:01:30.544]I can see where they are, what they're doing.
- [00:01:32.651]If we go to create class up here, class admin,
- [00:01:40.098]create a class.
- [00:01:41.761]Again, you choose what grade you work with.
- [00:01:43.580]This only does go K-12, so, if you're working in higher ed,
- [00:01:47.664]they don't have passages specifically designed
- [00:01:50.876]for higher ed, but if you have a freshman intro class
- [00:01:55.205]you might start them off with some 11-12 readings.
- [00:02:00.928]We're gonna go 11-12.
- [00:02:02.349]I'm gonna name my class and we'll say next.
- [00:02:06.641]Again, you can import a roster, so, if you're not
- [00:02:08.871]using Google Classroom and your students
- [00:02:10.412]don't Google, that's fine.
- [00:02:11.859]You can use a roster, but I'm gonna go ahead and do
- [00:02:15.665]the Google option.
- [00:02:17.485]When I add my students, again, they're gonna get
- [00:02:19.671]a class code, and, if you've used many of the online tools
- [00:02:22.650]we've talked about, students are used to
- [00:02:24.142]entering a class code.
- [00:02:25.677]Socrative uses them.
- [00:02:28.506]NearPod, Paradex, several of them use them,
- [00:02:30.803]so we'll go ahead and copy the code, and over here,
- [00:02:33.691]I'm a student, I'll enter my class code,
- [00:02:39.830]I'll log in with my Google account,
- [00:02:45.735]and there we go.
- [00:02:46.568]I am in the test class.
- [00:02:49.245]Again, from the student view it'll show them assignments
- [00:02:51.054]to do and then assignments that they've submitted.
- [00:02:54.486]If I go back over to my teaching side, I can assign
- [00:03:00.111]some readings, so let's go to assignments,
- [00:03:06.166]and I'll go to my test class,
- [00:03:11.601]I'll find some articles.
- [00:03:15.546]Again, you can do it by grade or by Lexile.
- [00:03:17.705]If you have students that have varying levels of reading
- [00:03:20.377]in your class or you have a strong ELO population
- [00:03:23.472]in your class, you can assign by Lexile level
- [00:03:26.011]instead of grade level.
- [00:03:27.866]I'm gonna stick with grade level for now.
- [00:03:30.507]I'll limit it to 11 and 12, and it's all topics right now.
- [00:03:36.657]You can do informational text or literature.
- [00:03:39.738]I can, from the article a day set, I can do those
- [00:03:43.309]and assign those as homework.
- [00:03:45.515]We'll go ahead and see what happens when I do article a day.
- [00:03:49.429]They don't have any.
- [00:03:50.262]How sad.
- [00:03:51.095]All right, we'll go back and I'll just take this first one.
- [00:03:55.250]I'll add it to my list, and then, from my list,
- [00:03:58.570]I should be able to assign it, right?
- [00:04:00.522]Once you've found something you wanna assign
- [00:04:02.163]to your students, and, you know, my 11th and 12th graders
- [00:04:05.472]will think The Bloody Massacre is something kinda cool
- [00:04:07.703]to read about, so we'll go ahead and assign it.
- [00:04:11.869]I'll give it to my class.
- [00:04:13.786]You can either give it to the whole class,
- [00:04:15.063]or you can give it to specific students.
- [00:04:18.628]If you're looking at students in your class,
- [00:04:25.925]we'll go ahead and give it to the whole class,
- [00:04:27.179]but, again, if you know that you have reading groups
- [00:04:29.406]set up in your class, you can give one reading to one group,
- [00:04:32.844]you can assign the readings based on their Lexile level
- [00:04:35.529]or, if they're not on grade level, you can assign a reading
- [00:04:37.967]for the grade level they're at, and then, again,
- [00:04:40.250]as they progress through you can scaffold 'em up,
- [00:04:44.085]and we'll say it's due Friday.
- [00:04:47.600]We'll go ahead and assign it.
- [00:04:49.833]I'll go to assignments
- [00:04:56.085]and it's been assigned to the whole class.
- [00:04:58.264]If I go over to my student section,
- [00:05:00.820]I should be able to see...
- [00:05:06.597]I should be able to see my assigned.
- [00:05:14.085]Let's assign another one.
- [00:05:17.118]Phonograph: we'll assign it.
- [00:05:25.340]If I go to student, 'cause this should show up.
- [00:05:28.383]Oh, there it is, okay.
- [00:05:30.013]Your students can view the assignment.
- [00:05:32.690]They'll open the reading, they go through the reading,
- [00:05:36.231]read read, read read, and then there's vocabulary,
- [00:05:43.206]just like we saw last week, right, with those lesson plans
- [00:05:46.264]where it had the reading text, it had vocabulary,
- [00:05:49.287]and then it has questions.
- [00:05:50.360]Only, now, in the student section, I'm answering
- [00:05:52.967]these reading comprehension questions,
- [00:05:55.550]and I didn't actually do the reading,
- [00:05:56.864]so I'm just gonna go through and guess,
- [00:05:59.598]but as I'm reading and answering these questions,
- [00:06:03.423]then the teacher gets the responses,
- [00:06:05.790]and then you have information you can work with.
- [00:06:09.147]Then there's some short answer questions, and I submit,
- [00:06:14.451]and I submit anyway, so then, when I go
- [00:06:16.930]to the teacher section,
- [00:06:23.139]I can look at the results and it'll show me
- [00:06:27.177]which ones were right, which ones were wrong,
- [00:06:30.550]and my guessing was very, very ineffective,
- [00:06:32.784]so I got most of them wrong, but let's say you have
- [00:06:36.662]a student that does really bad or doesn't seem to understand
- [00:06:40.103]the reading very well, you can reassign the same text.
- [00:06:44.353]Again, it doesn't have to be an all or nothing sort of thing
- [00:06:47.532]and, when you reassign the text, they get the chance
- [00:06:50.624]to read it again, and maybe you do some work in class
- [00:06:53.350]where you tell them, "Maybe you need to read more slowly.
- [00:06:56.057]"What parts of the text did you find confusing".
- [00:06:59.045]Maybe the text was just too challenging
- [00:07:00.655]for where they're at, so you need to give them
- [00:07:02.532]a different type of reading,
- [00:07:05.695]but then I could grade the assignment
- [00:07:10.887]and, again, since there were 10 questions
- [00:07:13.933]it's doing it out of 10, but you can go through
- [00:07:16.427]and modify, and then you can give 'em feedback.
- [00:07:19.974]I think this is especially useful
- [00:07:21.565]in the short answer questions.
- [00:07:23.160]When they're giving you that response, then, as the teacher,
- [00:07:25.970]you could say either this was a really well-thought out
- [00:07:28.696]response or, it's a good start, but did you consider
- [00:07:31.960]this part of the passage.
- [00:07:36.700]Again, you get that chance to give each student
- [00:07:41.532]what they need.
- [00:07:42.835]It does have some analytics built in where you can
- [00:07:45.595]evaluate the progress of where they are, and this, again,
- [00:07:50.504]is nice because you can get this on a mobile device,
- [00:07:52.897]so if your students have iPads.
- [00:07:55.410]If they're at home and their parents have a tablet
- [00:07:57.730]or a smart phone, they can do their reading
- [00:08:01.500]on a mobile device, they can do it in class, so, again,
- [00:08:04.963]if you have reading corners, they can do it there,
- [00:08:09.228]and, again, I like that it's an extension
- [00:08:10.902]of what we have in readworks.org.
- [00:08:13.369]Even if your students aren't using the online platform
- [00:08:16.445]or your students have trouble reading digital texts,
- [00:08:20.469]you can still come over to ReadWorks that we talked through
- [00:08:23.114]last time and get a printout
- [00:08:27.956]or just look at doing the lessons in the classroom,
- [00:08:31.637]but then you have this option over here
- [00:08:33.732]where you can extend that and incorporate more
- [00:08:36.070]of that digital learning platform for your students.
- [00:08:39.993]This has been ReadWorks Digital,
- [00:08:42.004]and we'll see you next time.
